Police Recover 23 Bicycles, 16 Strollers & More in the South Bay
A man and a woman were arrested Wednesday after the Manhattan Beach and Redondo Beach police departments conducted a probation search at a residence in the L.A. neighborhood of Westchester, finding several stolen items. Bicycle theft was on the rise last fall in the South Bay and this was one reason why. Anthony Michael Taraszka, 33, and Michelle Renee Thomspon, 31, who were both arrested in 2004 for stealing 50 bicycles, were apparently stealing bicycles, strollers and motorized scooters to support their drug habit by selling parts on eBay. In all, 23 bicycles and 16 high-end strollers were found. Both were charged with multiple counts of possession of stolen property and identity theft.
On the Road to LAX: Sepulveda Blvd. in Westchester Gets a Redo
The two-plus year, $8.9-million project along Sepulveda Boulevard in Westchester has finally been completed, officials announced today. As one of the main access routes to LAX, Sepulveda in Westchester was (and sometimes still can be) a headache for commuters, travelers and locals. The project between Lincoln and Howard Hughes Parkway brought improved sidewalks, landscaped medians, upgraded streetlights, new shrubbery, 193 new trees, a storm drain and catch basins. It also widened the street to three lanes in each direction with a street parking lane in the business district.
Standoff Suspect had Threatened to Blow Up White House
Joe Moshe, reportedly the suspect involved in yesterday's all-day standoff in Westwood, had called 911 on Wednesday "threatening to blow the White House," the LAPD explained in a statement released last night.
Westwood Standoff Ends After 8 Hours
The man standing off with police in Westwood since 10:30 a.m. was arrested without incident more than eight hours later when police approached the vehicle and pulled him out. He is reportedly Joe Moshe, 56, of Westchester.
Standoff in Westwood Continues into Rush Hour, Suspect Possibly ID'd
The police standoff that has lasted since mid morning has yet to end outside the Federal Building in Westwood. Veteran Avenue is closed south of Wilshire Boulevard after the suspect led police on a pursuit from his Westchester neighborhood where they and the Secret Service were seeking him on a warrant for reportedly making threats against the White House.

A police pursuit that began in Westchester has ended in a standoff between the suspect and police outside the federal building in Westwood. Officers from Pacific Division attempted to detain the suspect on a warrant when he fled in a Volkswagen, prompting the pursuit around 10 a.m. The suspect reportedly has made threats against the White House and the Secret Service is apparently involved, according to the LA Times. Veteran Avenue has been shut down near Wilshire and a nearby apartment building has been evacuated. UPDATE, 2:15 p.m.: The SWAT team has been deployed. UPDATE, 5 p.m.: Standoff still ongoing, suspect possibly identified. UPDATE, 7:45 p.m.: The suspect has been arrested.
Man Dressed as UPS Robs, Attacks 90-Year-Old in Westchester
Last week Monday, a man in his early twenties dressed like he worked for UPS knocked the door of a 90-year-old Westchester woman saying he had a delivery. When she opened the door, he forced himself in demanding money, according to the LAPD. At some point during the incident police say that he kicked and chocked her before leaving the home on the 9000 block of Chase Avenue, near Loyola Marymount University, with some cash. He is described as a male Hispanic, 22-23 years old, black hair, brown eyes, 6 feet 1 inch tall and 180 pounds. Smoked Out: Westchester Pot Clinic Goes Up in Flames
An early morning fire sent a medical marijuana dispensary in Westchester up in smoke today. The clinic, the Westchester Collective, was located "on the second floor of a two-story commercial building," at 8936 Sepulveda Blvd., according to cbs2.com. "It took 69 firefighters an hour to extinguish the blaze," that caused property damage but no injuries, and did not spread to nearby structures. Authorities are investigating the cause of the blaze
You're Having a Loud Party and the Cops Show Up...
With off campus partying exasperating Westchester neighbors and garnering the attention of the local news, Loyola Marymount officials have come out with some new "party protocol," as the school's paper puts it. Off-campus students will not only have to register their address, but will be required do an online orientation to learn about city ordinances. This week at a forum for students to ask police and city attorneys questions, the LAPD gave the low-down on how responding officers are allowed to deal with parties "When responding to any party, officers have the discretion to do any of the following: warn and disperse the crowd, cite the responsible party giver for Disturbing the Peace and/or noise violations, file a Disturbing the Peace report with no arrest or citation given or physically arrest and then book the individual at Pacific Division." 2,200 LADWP Customers Without Power in Westchester, Del Rey
A minor car crash caused a fairly good sized power outage this morning, leaving 2,200 cusotmers without power in Westchester and Del Rey. The car hit and pulled a guide wire--the suspension wire usually seen at a 45-degree angle from the power pole to the sidewalk--causing the power to go out. Crews are on scene addressing the problem, but the LA Department of Water & Power has no estimate of when power will be restored. No one was reported to be injured in the crash.
Macaulay Culkin's Sister Fatally Struck by Car
Dakota Culkin, 29, stepped in front of a car Tuesday night and later died at the hospital due suffering massive head injuries. It was on Lincoln Blvd., possibly near Jefferson, but police would not confirm the Westchester neighborhood intersection. They indicated that she may have been crossing illegally since no crime was committed by the driver, who stopped, rendered aid, identified himself and was not under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Actor and brother McCully Culkin is most well known for starring in the movie Home Alone. This follows two other recent celebrity sibling deaths. Earlier this week, Mark Ruffalo's brother died after apparently playing russian roulette. In October, Jennifer Hudson lost three family members to murder in Chicago.
6,000 People Say Goodbye to Firefighter Lovrien
An estimated 6,000 people are Downtown this morning for the procession and memorial services for Los Angeles Firefighter Brent Lovrien, who was killed in the line of duty last week in Westchester near LAX. Firefighters, likely representing almost every agency from around the state, have come to Los Angeles to show their support.
