Hotel Bel-Air's Upcoming Renovation Leaves Brides Jilted

Many local brides opt to have their weddings at any number of beautiful venues in the Los Angeles area, giving their special occasion a special setting. An oft-selected location is the Hotel Bel-Air because of its oasis-like setting and long history as a place to escape for celebrities since it began serving guests in 1946.

It seems Saturday's National Prop 8 protest in all 50 states was a tipping point. Not the same tipping point that beget large passionate protests and rallies on a daily basis outside the Mormon Temple in Westwood, but the type of tipping point where people are done protesting and now starting to put the pieces back together, plan for the next move and wait (but yes, protests are still going to happen no matter what).

My oh my, how things change fast. California's marriage licenses identified each of the couples by either bride and groom before gay marriage was legalized in May when it changed to Party A and Party B. But after many complaints and one couple threatening to sue, the state changed it back--this time with a few changes. "The new form will apply for same-sex and heterosexual marriages, and applicants may also decline to check any box at all," reported The Granite Bay View who quoted Suanne Buggy, a spokeswoman for the California Department of Public Health, saying "You could check bride and groom, bride and bride, groom and groom. And it is completely optional if a couple decides they don’t want to check anything at all.” The new forms will be available in November.

After 21 years of being a couple, George Takei and Brad Altman tied the knot at the Japanese American National Museum in Little Tokyo at their public wedding yesterday. They first made their appearance by stepping out together singing "One Singular Sensation" from "A Chorus Line" before entering a circle of yellow roses and lilies and sharing a traditional Japanese tea ceremony before being wed by a Buddhist priest. They exchanged their own vows and used Native American wedding bands proceeded by a bagpipe procession.

Thanks to California's recent legalization of same-sex marriages, one of the world's largest greeting card companies has now expanded their offerings to accommodate those who wish to give the happy couples a sexuality-specific paper token of esteem. Hallmark, based in Kansas City, Missouri, has introduced new cards for same-sex couples, although they do their best to avoid overtly stating that the cards are for two people getting married. Explains the Associated Press (via the Long Beach Press-Telegram): "The language inside the cards is neutral, with no mention of wedding or marriage, making them also suitable for a commitment ceremony. Hallmark says the move is a response to consumer demand, not any political pressure."

Reports out of Beverly Hills say that comedienne and talk-show host Ellen DeGeneres, 50, and her partner, actress Portia de Rossi, 35, were married last night. The Associated Press is calling this "perhaps the highest-profile gay marriage since California legalized the unions." US Magazine predicted that the nuptials would take place this weekend, and that the couple, who've been together for 4 years, were planning to hold "a small, intimate ceremony with only a few close friends and family" present.

A new Field Poll on Proposition 8, which proposes to limit marriage only between a man and a woman in California, says that it will fail by a slim majority (51%). In 2000, a similar proposition denying gay marriage was approved by 61%. Yes on Prop 8 people say the poll understates the support to ban gay marriage in the state (and others are calling them out their rebuttal). A May 23 poll by the LA Times and KTLA showed that Californians would "narrowly" reject same-sex marriages. So, what does all this mean? It means that there will be no telling how this prop will turn out until after election day.

After missing the boat on the first days of same-sex marriage due to two out-of-town trips, Mayor Villaraigosa finally began to fill his promise of marrying "as many people as possible." Yesterday afternoon, he joined together Bruce Cohen and Gabriel Catone. Cohen is an Academy Award-winning producer for American Beauty and has also produced Big Fish and Pushing Daisies and Catone is an art consultant in New York.

Tuesday came and went, but not without history being made. Same-sex couples around California signed their marriage licenses, made their vows and rejoiced in a right that they should have had long ago. Hundreds turned out to West Hollywood Park as a new marriage licensing facility opened just that morning. A few quiet protesters showed up, but other than that, the park was full of laughter and smiles. Wandering through the crowd, you could hear certain phrases said over and over again such as "finally," "this is historic," I feel lucky to be part of this," and "can you believe it?"

To help open West Hollywood's new facility to issue marriage certificates, actor George Takei and partner Brad Altman standby before getting their marriage certificate permits themselves this morning. They spoke to The Early Show yesterday and said their wedding will be in September (video below).

Wanna know why I'm a bachelor? Because people are crazy and young brides are the craziest. Some of this young lady's friends are sweet, but some of them are laughing at her and one just keeps filming and filming and filming. Why didn't anyone take the scissors away from this imbalanced lass? Why didn't any one of her friends go with her to the hair dresser? Why are people getting married so damn young?...
