Tonight In Rock: Miike Snow, Hot Hot Heat, School Of Seven Bells, Nosaj Thing

Tonight Swedish electro pop outfit Miike Snow will be concluding a sold-out, three-night stint at the Henry Fonda Music Box with none other than LAist favorite, Nashville's Daniel James, better known as Canon Blue. Canadian indie rockers Hot Hot Heat are poised to kick off a month-long residency at the Bootleg Theater. And, lastly... more ›

To say that it's been a good year for Avi Buffalo would be an understatement. They've managed to pull off what most teenagers only fantasize about it. Graduate high school? Check. Sign to Sub Pop? Tonight In Rock: No Age, Avi Buffalo, Portugal. The Man, Nico Stai [Updated]

Tonight In Rock: No Age, Avi Buffalo, Portugal. The Man, Nico Stai [Updated]

Tonight local noise-infused rock act No Age (LAist Review, #2, #3), Mika Miko (LAist Review) will be performing at the Center for the Arts, Eagle Rock with none other than Brooklyn-by-way-of-Olympia ambient outfit Growing. Wasilla-bred indie rockers Portugal. The Man are poised to perform for free at Space 15 Twenty in Hollyweird, touring in support of their sixth full-length endeavor—2010's American Ghetto. And, lastly, LA-based indie rock troubadours Nico Stai will be taking on the Bootleg Theater with Shadow Shadow Shade (formerly known as the Afternoons) in tow. But we strongly suggest heading over to the Troubadour to catch Long Beach/Los Alamitos natives and recent Sub Pop signees Avi Buffalo (LAist Interview, Review), who will be ringing in their hotly anticipated self-titled debut. Local ambient rockers Voices Voices and Brooklyn-based indie rock act the Wailing Wall are slated to kick things off. more ›

2nd Annual Manimal Festival w/ Fool's Gold, Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros, VOICEsVOICEs, Juliette Commagere, The Polyamorous Affair, Warpaint + More @ Pappy & Harriet's Pioneertown Palace, 10/4 & 10/5/09

             + 9 more

Earlier this month, local record label Manimal Vinyl (see our interview last year with its founder) held its 2nd Annual Manimal Festival at Pappy and Harriet's Pioneertown Palace. "In its second year, the two-day event showcases bands on Paul Beahan's record label... alongside musically bohemian peers," described Daiana Feuer from Papermag. "Manimal's experimental pop catalog -- which began most notably by releasing Bat For Lashes' record two years ago -- lends a unified voice to freak folk and its close cousins, many which are collected on yearly tribute albums to Madonna, The Cure, and in 2010, David Bowie. Manimal's focus mainly follows two streams: The ethereal, spooky soloist tradition [and] the dance beat, taking pop to strange outer space." more ›

Tonight In Rock: Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings, No Age, Mika Miko, Voices Voices

Tonight ambient rockers Voices Voices will be performing at the Viper Room with Pop Noir. The football helmet-clad experimental electro outfit known as Anavan will be rocking out at the Echo for this week's edition of Part Time Punks. And, lastly, LA-based indie rockers Divisadero are playing with Daniel Brummel (of Ozma) at All Star Lanes in Eagle Rock for the Bowling & Drinking Club. But we strongly suggest spending the day in the Downtown Area. Around mid-day, in what will be touted as one of its best shows of the year, the Smell is hosting a prominent array of noisy locals, such as No Age (LAist Review, #2, #3), Mika Miko (LAist Review) and Abe Vigoda. And later on in the evening, funk and soul maestros Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings (LAist Review, #2) will be headlining Club Nokia. Neither event should be missed! more ›
