A vigil was held at a Torrance Church this morning in honor of Euna Lee and Laura Ling, according to MyFoxLA. The two American journalists were recently sentenced to twelve years of hard labor in North Korea on charges of being spies. The pair, who were working on a piece for San Francisco-based network Current TV, were captured on March 17th and put to trial earlier this month.

              

Rain did not sway the couple hundred people who turned out to last night's "Eve of Justice" vigil and march held at Olvera Street in downtown. Mayor Villaraigosa presided over a handful of recommitment ceremonies as similar events took place across the state and country.

we will stand together," reads a flyer (.pdf) for tomorrow night's event. "Meet at El Pueblo to hear from our legal council, celebrate our families, and unite in solidarity and hope." The 5:30 p.m. event goes to 8 p.m. and organizers urge people to use Metro to arrive (Union Station is right across the street).

Tomorrow night, South LA community members and the LAPD will be holding a vigil "to create community awareness to a series of 12 murders over a 22 year period that police believe were committed by a serial killer, to remember the victims and to disseminate information regarding these cases and the suspect(s)." The murders--all in the South LA region and mostly women--by the media-named "Grim Sleeper" occurred between 1985 and 2007 and are tied together by DNA testing. The LAPD is using four billboards to advertise their up to $500,000 reward to also create awareness and the vigil will be held at the location of one of those: southeast corner of Colden Avenue and Figueroa Street at 5 p.m. tomorrow.

December is The Official Recession's first birthday month. There's no need not to enjoy it on the cheap. We last had some great Mexican food, and bargain massages. Today's inexpensive adventure is sure to please in a different way.

       

It was quiet, people seemed happy and overall, the Prop 8 candlelight vigil on Saturday night in Hollywood was positive. Light Up the Night was a nationwide demonstration that aimed to make an impact on the private sector by holding the vigils in high traffic business or shopping areas. Organizers estimate the vigils reached one million people with the message of equality.

1 in every 9 homeless people in the United States live in Los Angeles County, and just this past year, 393 of them died. The Los Angeles Coalition to End Hunger and Homelessness (LACEHH), along with other advocacy and service organizations, are holding candlelight vigils to memorialize those who died, and thousands across the country are doing the same, for the National Homeless Persons' Memorial Day. In Santa Monica, a vigil is planned for 4:00 p.m. at the 3rd Street Promenade, just south of Arizona Avenue. And in Studio City, a vigil at the same time will be held at Laurel Canyon and Ventura Boulevard. At both events,which will last one hour and a half, the names of the 393 dead will be read aloud, followed by the word "Presente" which means "here" or "present" in Spanish. Candles will be provided.
