Found in LA: The Totem Power Pole

Dennis Hathaway, the activist behind BanBillboardBlight.org, saw this guerilla looking public art and snapped a photo to share with us. It's on North Madison Avenue, just east of Los Angeles City College and Vermont Avenue. Anyone know the story behind this?

Details have finally been pieced together after yesterdays officer involved shooting at Sunset and Vermont yesterday after a robbery at a LG Electronics store. When police arrived, a foot chase ensued leading to an officer, who was "slashed in the head with a knife" by one of the robbery suspects, shooting off two rounds. One hit the suspect injuring him and another hit the windshield of a route 240 Metro Bus.

I’ve been an avid fair-attendee and crafter for years and must say it’s my favorite place to get that special unique, handmade something for the people who seem to have just about everything.

Tobias Wacker has uploaded just one video on YouTube, but it's a dandy. Walking from One Wilshire to the Santa Monica Beach is 16 miles and Tobias took a picture every 10 steps. As you see he isn't afraid to cross Wishire now and then and he has a bit of fun by checking out cool things like tall buildings, the La Brea Tar Pits, and the dancing guy at Westside Rentals. Definitely something...

Grindhouse The Girl from Starship Venus (AKA The Sexplorer) is a space nudie starring Monika Ringwald as an astronaut from Venus who lands in London's swinging Soho district circa 1975. Her mission? To research sex customs on the planet Earth. This is paired with The Legend of the Wolf Woman, a 1976 horror film from Italy whose title pretty much says it all. A beautiful woman seeks men out, has sex with them then turns...

Have you seen Santa trying to cross the street this holiday season? Did you yield to him or were you naughty? Those who are bad are getting tickets in the LAPD's Santa Claus Crosswalk Enforcement Detail. You may have also seen a rise in DUI Sobriety Checkpoints, and heard of the free MTA riding this Christmas and New Year's. It's been a busy week for the LAPD and here is some blotter info: A 20-year...

December 17th seems to be a big day for the MTA (maybe everyone gets to go on vacation on the 18th?), but whatevs, LAist is never one to pooh-pooh progress, particularly regarding public transportation in this fair city. The MTA announced today that the Valley will get a new Rapid line on Reseda Blvd. between Northridge and Tarzana - welcome Line 741! The 364 won't be a Rapid per-se but will be a "limited...

Oh man, Mom's in town and already she's all wah wah wah about how she wants to visit a museum. A real museum. Last time she was here she declared the Museum of Online Museums "not a real museum," and she got so confused in a bad way by the Museum of Jurassic Technology that she forgot to pick up the bill at dinner that night. Damn. You're not gonna let that happen again.

Lest anyone think that we don't love Mariah, we do. LAist is down with Mimi. Spread your wings, glittery butterfly and soar. However over the years many other things have spread and soared. Now, we'd be the last to suggest that a big beautiful black woman needs to cover her bootyliciousness, but it appears from the looks of the photos of Mariah's kickoff concert in Miami yesterday - the first gig of her US...

Southern California is so big that it's easy to lose sight of all its treasures, especially living ones. In our myopia, we tend to think that most writers identified with our region all live west of I-15 and south of I-405. Novelist Susan Straight challenges that presumption just as her work challenges so many other notions about race, class and Californian culture.

Ok, the countdown to Chrismukkah has begun. People, you have about 2.5 shopping days left, so take our shopping rules into consideration when venturing into the wild this week. One reader recently commented that rather than hitting the retail megaplexes, Angelenos should hit the mom-and-pop places. Good advice. And here's a shop that you can probably find something for everyone -- at least for those with a sense of humor.

Here's some upcoming events happening around town:

We're changing things up a bit here at LAist. Because we live in such a vibrant, socially active city, there are things going on all the time. We have long wanted to be able to list events in advance (for the benefit of our wonderful readers), so starting today we have implemented a new strategy: a week's events in advance. We will still post featured events each day, but we've added a permanent sidebar (to the left) that will always link to a post containing this week's events.
