Canadian rockers The Tragically Hip perform their last show of the week at the Troubadour in West Hollywood and nearby at the Key Club, Brooklyn based Balkan Beat Box headlines featuring their amalgam of glorious Sephardic, dub and electronica sounds. But our pick of the night is Afro Funke, which is not a band, but rather a club night at Zanzibar in Santa Monica. It's the weekly world/salsa/Brazilian/positive music event's 6th anniversary and one LAist gives a high recommendation for, whether you go tonight or any other Thursday (read our write up of the event from last year).

Our Pick: An Horse, Wintersleep @ Echoplex

There are four ways to get into The Viper Room's long standing weekly Monday night music bash, 103.1 Check One... Two. The most advertised way is to e-mail them via MySpace to get on the list and enter for free. But if you show up to the door unannounced, it's $10. Likewise, if you show up without the e-mail RSVP, but know a secret password, it's $5. But if you already spent $5 on your Metro Day Pass, then the Viper Room has you taken care of (weekly and monthly passes work too).

There is a damn good line up of bands happening this Friday night over in Glendale at The Scene at 9:00 p.m. And despite the Valley club's interesting change in direction with membership, this Friday is still the spirit of the old scene as it is the second-to-last show booked under old management. Friday's line up includes Death to Anders, Fol Chen, Solar Powered People and Layer with the Squaregirls will be DJing between sets.

Venues are still recovering from New Year's Eve as not many concerts are happening tonight. But that doesn't mean there's good music to check out. Local organic hip-hoppers, Swamphouse (a mixture of R&B, rock and jazz), open up at Temple Bar in Santa Monica tonight at 9:30 p.m. They are followed by the Manhattan Beach based reggae band -- International Farmers -- at 11 p.m.

It's Saturday so expect lots of LA Film Festival action in Westwood. At 9:30 a.m. you can attend a free Hi Def Video Expo at Bel Air Camera. Other free events are the Made in L.A. screening at noon at the Mann Festival Theater, The Game of SKATE Tournament at 1:00 p.m. at the Festival Promenade on Broxton, The Bands on Broxton at 4:30 p.m. (also at the Promenade), A Conversation with Festival Artist-in-Residence Pharrell Williams at 8:00 p.m. at the Hammer Museum and a screening of Night of the Comet at 8:30 p.m. at the Promenade. Maybe my childhood crush Catherine Mary Stewart will make an appearance.

Starting this Thursday May 3rd, our little bohemian neighborhood that could, Silver Lake, will be holding its nine day long, 7th annual Silver Lake Film Festival, complete with indie movies, indie music, and even indie darling Parker Posey accepting the “Spirit of Silver Lake” award.
