Say Goodbye to Hollywood: The Knitting Factory to Close

Open since 2000, Hollywood Boulevard's music venue The Knitting Factory announced yesterday that they will not renew their lease for the site, which ends on October 31st of this year, reports the LA Times music blog Pop & Hiss.

Popular Indie Music Venue Pehrspace Hears Trouble

Neighborhood concerns over noise and quality of life issues surrounding pehrspace in the Historic Filipinotown neighborhood apparently have led to the self-invoked precautionary and temporary closure of the venue's Monday night concert series run by Sean Carnage.

Imagine a structure hailed for its exterior design that took 60 days to build, was trafficked by hundreds of thousands of people for almost four decades, spent 17 years abandoned with an uncertain fate, contributed to the launch of LA's preservation movement, and took one night to burn to the ground.

If you faithfully watched the first season of "True Blood" on HBO this Fall, then you'll remember Fangtasia, the vampire bar set in Shreveport, Louisiana. The true setting of the bar isn't too far off from reality, in alternative theme at least. It's actually Alex's Bar in Long Beach which is one of the top venues for punk music in the Los Angeles area. LAist has visited them a number of times for shows and is happy to see the great venue used for a great show (also a candy-crack easy-to-read addicting book series by Charlaine Harris).

After we learn that music booked by The Fold at Tangier is going on hiatus as possible new owners buy the well-known Los Feliz bar/restaurant, we are also hearing that The Malibu Inn has new owners, which is apparently affecting the music venue. Butch Walker posts this bulletin (not linkable) on MySpace:

We're continuing to hear that the restaurant/bar/music concert space that is Tangier in Los Feliz is having some financial troubles and may be going out of business. Whether that is true or not, what we do know is that it is currently in escrow and if that goes through, it remains to be seen what the news owners do with the place.

Last year L.A. LIVE opened the first phase of its massive project with the NOKIA Theatre, accommodating 7,100 people per show (The Emmys were there on Sunday). This year on November 10 Club NOKIA will open its doors for the first time to 2,300 fans of Beck (tickets go on sale Saturday). Their line-up, which includes Matisyahu, Usher and B.B. King has only been announced through February. Also in December, the GRAMMY Museum located next to Club NOKIA is expected to have its grand opening.

More details are coming out regarding The Temple Bar closing its doors at the end of next month. The venue's booker, Dexter Story, described closing as bittersweet. "We're going to miss this place," he said over the phone this afternoon. As to why owners Louie and Netty Ryan are choosing to close the venue, Story forwarded a letter they have been sending out (the full letter is posted in full below this story):

The newly renovated Hollywood Palladium has announced their fall line-up, which begins with JAY-Z on October 15. The rest of their schedule includes Flogging Molly, The Kooks, Of Montreal, Slightly Stoopid, Mudvayne, Gym Class Heroes/The Roots, Rise Against, Dragonforce, Alejandra Guzman, Onerepublic and La Fabrika Del Reggaeton. Tickets will be sold on Live Nation's website starting tomorrow for Rise Against, but all the other shows will be sold starting on September 13, except for JAY-Z on September 5.

The Knitting Factory's conditional use permit was challenged last month and if they lost a Conditional Use Permit hearing, they could have been forced to close their doors. Someone at the Scientology building next door allegedly started a petition complaining about the music venue which started this whole matter.

On Thursday, the Hollywood music venue, Knitting Factory, will be at a morning hearing that could revoke the Conditional Use Permit that allows the space to operate. The hearing was prompted by a petition circulated by an employee of the neighboring Scientology building and signed by a total of 31 people, according to a Knitting Factory spokesman. The two complaints listed say that the venue is a nuisance to the community and challenges their adherence to the permit. Rumors are also floating around that there are tensions between the venue and landlord, CIM Group, but the Knitting Factory says they hear the developer may "go at bat" for them.

The music venue that is the Knitting Factory has been a mainstay in the resurgence of Hollywood since 2000. As an anchor tenant and early adopter of the area, the New York City based club saw Hollywood change from having the 18th Street Gang territory sit one block away to having tourists flock the area making it a likely candidate for one of the most pedestrian dense areas in the city. Now that the area is built up and the Factory is surrounded by national brand name stores and businesses, trouble has come knocking on the door.

Tickets for 89.9 KCRW's presentation of Sigur Rós on October 2nd at The Greek go on sale Saturday at 10:00 a.m. Lucky for you, LAist running a contest giving you a chance to win a pair of tickets to the show before tickets go on sale.

Over the last couple of weeks, the scene at the Viper Room has been changing -- bartenders were let go, one of the bookers is gone, and now the internal publicist and talent buyer announced a seemingly abrupt departure. Former publicist Annie Geyer writes in an e-mail:

The LA Times music blog, Soundboard, confirms it. Largo owner Mark Flanagan is planning on closing and moving Largo by mid-May to the Coronet Theatre on La Cienega, north of Beverly Blvd.

First Nova Express Cafe? Now Largo? The good news, however, is that Largo's alleged closing is about opening a new space on La Cienaga according to bulletin board threads on www.fairfax-avenue.com and the Ditty Bops' website.
