Photo by Jonathan Alcorn via LAist Featured Photos on Flickr The Los Angeles Times conducted a survey of all 58 counties in California asking about policies relating to same-sex marriage. 35 stated that employees were not allowed to opt out of officiating over marriages for any reason; or, at least, no reservations were expressed by clerks in those counties. "We're not going to make accommodations for someone to practice illegal discrimination," Nevada County Clerk-Recorder......

Part of an ongoing series. Last Friday, local band The Movies (MySpace) at Spaceland (MySpace) in Silver Lake as part of The Parson Redheads' (MySpace) Owl & Timber EP release show. It was just last month that The Movies celebrated the release of their LP, Based on a True Story, with a show at Bordello alongside The Happy Hollows (MySpace) and The Savages (MySpace). As for The Parson Redheads, their next shows are on......

The Mexican/Spanish restaurant-lounge Senor Fred has cemented its reputation as a Ventura Blvd. hot spot for drinks, but it's also a nice lunch destination for those of you trawling the Sherman Oaks area. The place fulfills at least two requirements of a good Mexican restaurant: spicy salsa that tastes homemade (their version has a nice smoky flavor to it), and strong, simple margaritas. The food is far superior to Mexicali's questionable menu, but about......

The city of Ventura has been taken off the map. Specifically, the Greyhound Bus Line service map. This week the company shut down the station in Ventura, and wiped it off their route, to the surprise of many who had been hoping to hop a bus out of town. So is busing it a relic of a bygone era? One possible reason behind the elimination of the stop is "Greyhound’s owners are trimming costs," according......

When you have a huge music collection and you listen almost all the time, there tends to be a few artists that you come back to over and over. In our house, full of CD's, concert DVD's, and iPods a few artists reign supreme: The Beatles, Elvis Costello, and Loudon Wainwright III. Loudon's music can make you feel, make you smile, and make you think-- he is a master storyteller. Often listed with the......

A group of homeowners are trying to change their part of Reseda to be officially recognized as Reseda Ranch. Sean Bonner of Blogging.la spots Los Angeles Dodger bling on the streets of Tokyo. The results should be in by tomorrow for today's vote by grocery workers on the proposed labor contract. It is expected to pass. A woman in Ventura was killed in a hit and run while riding her bike when a truck......

A Memorial Weekend BBQ in East Hollywood was my destination yesterday. And since my recent habit has been to use public transit mixed with the bike, that's what I set out to do from my Sherman Oaks flat. First, I was off to Ralphs Fresh Fare at Ventura and Coldwater to pick up some food. I shop, exit and head to my bike. Right then, an escalade pulls up and parks in the fire......

We sort of chuckled after finishing this hike. We stood at the trail head 15 minutes after we started. So much for a big adventure (hehe). However, there is still value in this eighth-mile hike at an odd cul de sac surrounded by expensive hillside condos just north of Mulholland Drive in Studio City. We're sure the residents of the street do not appreciate so much the public park outside their door, but also......

What would get traffic moving faster at the Valley's busiest intersection of Ventura and Sepulveda (or shall we say the nation's busiest freeway intersection of the 101/405)? 1. Finishing 101/405 interchange construction for once and for all? 2. Limiting construction hours to 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., therefore extending construction by months. The LA Daily News reports that the delay of the Northbound 405 on-ramp at Greenleaf St. in Sherman Oaks (just south of Ventura......

Los Angeles Sunday on NPR Last night, NPR featured, almost back to back, two stories about LA. The first, an interview with LAPD Chief Bratton on LA's increased gang problem. A few minutes later, Al Shelton's Western Art storefront on Ventura Blvd. is featured. (All Things Considered, NPR) LA's Reservoirs "Facing new water regulations prohibiting open-air reservoirs of potable water, the city would prefer to cover Elysian and Upper Stone Canyon reservoirs with fabric, metal......
