Saving State Parks Could Mean a $15 Vehicle Fee

An annual $15 vehicle fee proposed by a state budget committee yesterday could save 80% of state parks currently threatened to be closed amidst the budget crisis. The Ventura County Star explains: Under the plan, all motorists would pay a $15 surcharge on the license fees they pay each year to register their vehicles. The surcharge would yield about $220 million — enough to keep parks open, allow anyone with a California license to enter and park for free at state parks and leave enough left over to make some debt payments on outstanding park bonds.

Blue Line Train & Car Collide Near Downtown

A collision between a Metro Blue Line train and a vehicle, possibly a pick up truck, left at least one person injured and transported to the hospital. At 1:25 p.m., the two collided near Washington and Main just south of downtown, but no train passengers were hurt. Two other people were in the vehicle, but their condition is unknown and the circumstances of the crash are under investigation. Last week, two pedestrians were killed when crossing the Blue Line tracks. If LAist is keeping tabs correctly, this is the 827th incident on the Blue Line since it opened in 1990. In the past, some LAist commenters believe this is purely an issue of survival of the fittest and others think Metro's safety standards are not up to par.

The U.S. Forest Service has come out saying the apparent cause of the Marek Fire is "vehicle related," the LA Times reports. "Although preliminary findings indicated the blaze was caused by a vehicle, no further information was available, said Sherry Rollman, a spokeswoman for the Angeles National Forest." Earlier reports indicated the fire started near a shooting range, which it may have, but easily led to gun firing theories.

Advertisers will do just about anything to create a cool ad spot that will get their product noticed. That kind of thinking is probably what led American Honda to take over a stretch of Avenue K in Lancaster and set it up so that cars driving on it pass over grooves tuned to emit the notes of the "William Tell Overture."

LAist Featured Photos contributor KeithJ recently found this SMUD plug-in Prius on the streets of Monrovia. Considering the price of gas, even drivers of "traditional" hybrid vehicles like the Prius are feeling the pain at the pump (albeit in smaller quantities). Maybe it will be sooner than we think when our streets are clogged with even more popular fuel efficient vehicles like plug-in hybrids...Could be something worth getting all charged up about, hmmm?

It happened during the 1950s in Los Angeles. Mr Hall was waiting for a traffic light when the girl came into view by the side of the road. She was pretty, and she was hitch-hiking, her thumb raised to the heavens and her elegant complexion faced towards the stationary vehicle. However, on this occasion Mr Hall didn't have time, and as the light flicked to green he zoomed off with haste, not giving the hitch-hiker a second glance.
