At 12:01 p.m. today, the USC Department of Public Safety received a call from a Resident's Assistant in New/North (dorms) that a student was not breathing. Captain David Carlisle of USC's DPS said that campus police arrived shortly after the call as well as Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics, who pronounced the man dead upon arrival. Homicide detectives from the LAPD were then called out. After their initial investigation, preliminary reports stated that it appeared to be a drug overdose, prompting a call to the coroner.

After the Trojans' plummet in the polls following the loss to Stanford and the release of the first BCS poll, many thought the team couldn't or wouldn't drop any further. Not so, as the AP is reporting that a chartered plane with 82 players aboard, headed to Indiana for tomorrow's Notre Dame game experienced an extreme drop while flying through a severe thunderstorm. Weather was so bad that the pilot had to abandon his first...
A lot of the post-game analysis of USC's victory over Idaho on Saturday uses terms like "lackluster," "stalled," "uninspired," "sputtering" among others. The general consensus seems to be that since we did not run up the 45 point margin that odds makers had predicted that the Trojan effort was somehow lacking. Well, anyone who picked up a paper on Sunday knows that USC defeated Idaho by a score of 38 to 10. The Vandals were...
Yes, that's Alex Trebek. No, he hasn't lost it. The Jeopardy! College Championships are going down at the University of Southern California and it looks like he's feeling the Spirit of Troy. College students could always use some extra cash, so one smart-Alex is going to walk away with $100,000 to pay for books and Ramen a new plasma TV and Trump steaks. A potpourri of California schools have been represented on the program this...
So, last night was USC's Fountain "Run", the ancient ritual signifying that finals are over and that seniors are officially done with school. I went into it thinking it'd be like UCLA's Undie Run, which from the looks of LAist's crack coverage several weeks ago, ranks up there on the debauch-o-meter with a transatlantic flight on Joe Francis' private jet. But this is USC. Things here are a bit tamer, right? Right? Despite the...
Lakers 111, Hornets 105 - Kobe continued to flaunt has superiority in the face of March Madness, talking before the game about how honored he was to be discussed in the same "bracket" as Wilt Chamberlain, Michael Jordan, and Elgin Baylor. After the game, he moved from the final four to the championship. While Michael and Elgin scored 50+ points in three straight games, Kobe has now done it in four (65, 50, 60, 50)....
Reggie Bush was the most exciting athlete LA has ever seen. In the end, he was also a fair amount of trouble for USC and some have questioned if he's a "class act." Enter OJ Mayo. Many consider this kid the brightest star in high school basketball. He's flashy and exciting, but he's been getting in a lot of trouble. This is a video from his final high school game -- a blowout victory...
The USC student body is shaken and now it's going to cause a stir. At least 300 protesters plan to descend on Traddies, the on-campus bar, for a rally at 6:00pm on Thursday, March 22. According to Facebook, a popular college networking site, an additional 100 people are listed as "maybe" and over 400 have yet to RSVP for the "Boycott Traddies" event. Confirmations are likely to increase after next weekend as students are on...
Bruins 70, Trojans 65 - For the second time this season, LAist correctly predicted a barn burner. UCLA didn't have a lead until the final six minutes, when USC's foul trouble unraveled an impressive game from the matchup's traditional underdog. The Bruins went 23-31 at the line, compared to a mere 3-5 for the Trojans. USC kept it close until the final seven seconds, hitting a string of deep shots to pull within three. A...
Lakers 118, Wizards 102 - Some say the Gilbert Arenas - Kobe Bryant rivalry has sprouted, and LAist is pretty sure it's budding. Both players have denied any personal friction despite mild trash talking in the media. Their exciting play against each other in Washington demonstrated talent and mutual admiration. Kobe had 39 points and Arenas had 37, several of which came on spectacular plays against one another. Kings 7, Panthers 0 - It wasn't the Miracle On Ice, but it...
Bruins 69, Ducks 57 - UCLA hoops grabbed sole possession of first place in the Pac 10 as the conference's top two teams faced off at Pauley Pavilion. The Bruins dominated immediately after the opening tipoff to avenge an earlier loss to Oregon which knocked them out of the nation's #1 ranking. The were also eager to put their last game -- a loss at Stanford -- behind them. They did so in convincing fashion...
Just days after winning the Rose Bowl, USC kicker Mario Danelo was found dead at the bottom of a cliff in San Pedro. Internet message boards are flooded with rumors, but there has been very little confirmed at this time. His body was found around 4:30pm on Saturday. Danelo had some major ups and downs this week. On Monday, he hit two key field goals to help USC win the Rose Bowl against Michigan. In...
Trojans 32, Wolverines 18 - After losing two games in the Rose Bowl in 2006 (one against Texas in the national championship, the other against UCLA to keep them out of another national championship), USC had a lot of doubters. Not any more. While LA news outlets have probably told you the score and a few key stats, here are the best story lines you probably haven't heard: - This was the first game...
Crosstown congratulations go to UCLA. They had a good D and an even better W. They earned it. USC suffered from uninspired play-calling and some might argue that they were looking past their arch-rival, a two touchdown underdog who hadn't beaten the Trojans since Monica Lewinsky was an intern. In reality, UCLA proved why rivalry games have nothing to do with the size of the dog in the fight, but with the size of...
Today marks the greatest upset in recent NCAAF history. UCLA climbed atop 7 years of defeat to burn USC 13-9. The Victory Bell has been pried from the cold dead hands of the Trojan offense and returned to its rightful home: Westwood. What was said to be impossible has happened. A lot of people are going to have to make good on ridiculous bets tomorrow morning. Patrick Cowan: you showed that you can run...
Mayor Tony has a busy Sunday scheduled for this weekend, but we're glad to see he's blocked off the entirety of tomorrow to pulling for the underdog Bruins as they square off against Tommy Trojan and the Song Girls. Saturday, December 2, 2006 1:00 PM - PASADENA - Mayor Villaraigosa will cheer on the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) Bruins as they go up against the University of Southern California (USC) Trojans in...
ESPN can show you almost every angle of USC's huge victory over archrival Notre Dame. The two schools are media darlings and own the biggest intersectional rivalry in all of college sports (biggest cross-town rivalry goes to USC and UCLA, but more on that later this week). What they don't always show is what it's like for the fan. Here is an exclusive LAist video of our highlights from Saturday night. After the jump...
Even though he probably deserved the handcuffs for something done off camera (shockingly, no tasers were necessary), we kinda' feel for this guy who ran into trouble at Saturday's USC-Cal game. Back in 2001 LAist tried to sit in the Cal student section in Berkeley while sporting USC colors. The crowd started chanting "take off that red shirt" (a chant that originates with their hatred of Stanford), and a small mob physically and forcibly...
Trojans make ritual sacrifice to please Lucas. AP Photo by J. Pat Carter. The flag of Troy flies over Hollywood today as members of the separatist USC Mafia celebrate a landmark day in their fight to become a sovereign nation. Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff General George Lucas donated $175 million from his personal war chest to outfit and supply the cinematic powerhouse. “The force is strong in Troy,” remarked Lucas. “And...
After averaging 6,950 students at football games over the last three years (max of 7,540), USC realized that they didn’t need to reserve all 12,000 seats. With even cheap seats running $35 at each of 6 home games, they could project $1,060,500 in lost ticket sales for the 2006 season.
In 1999, Los Angeles writer Janet Fitch's first novel White Oleander became a national bestseller, aided in part by its selection as a title read by Oprah Winfrey's influential book club. Deemed an "overnight success" at the age of 43, Janet obtained fame and recognition after spending more than 20 years quietly honing her craft as a writer. White Oleander showed readers unique and underexposed aspects of life in the county of Los Angeles as Astrid, the novel's heroine, made her way through the area's foster care system while her mother, Ingrid, served time in prison for murdering a feckless boyfriend.
The by-invitation-only guests will include people working in fashion, film, music, academia and law. Speakers include designer Kevan Hall, “Sex and the City” creator Michael Patrick King, musician T-Bone Burnett and Booth Moore, fashion reporter for the Los Angeles Times, and vintage guru Cameron Silver.
Tomorrow is an epic day for all of you fans of Troy. No, LAist speaks not of the cumbersome, homo-erotic, overlong and overhyped Brad Pitt fiasco from this past summer, but rather of a certain press conference occurring within the holy walls of the University of Southern California.
