After Sports Illustrated’s piece on UCLA men’s basketball program went live on their website this morning, it’s apparent that the Bruins have a big problem on their hands. The problem is worse than those that author George Dohrmann enumerated in his piece: it’s the problem of irrelevancy.
UCLA's Problem Bigger than Players
UCLA Hires Jim Mora, Jr.
The Los Angeles Times is reporting that UCLA athletic director Dan Guerrero has hired Jim Mora, Jr. to replace Rick Neuheisel as head football coach of the Bruins.
LAst Night's Action: USC Beats Pac-12 South Champion
USC Trojans defeat UCLA Bruins 50-0. So there you saw the Pac-12 South Champions get their asses handed to them by the team that ends the season in first place in the Pac-12 South. Thanks to the NCAA, that sentence is not only factual but completely logical. Go figure.
LAst Night's Action: Kings Look Up at the Stars
Dallas Stars defeat LA Kings 3-2 (OT). After withstanding a Dallas flurry at the start of the second period, the Kings scored twice in just over 30 seconds: Mike Richards extending his career-high five-game goal streak and Kevin Westgarth with his first career goal. The last King to have a five-game scoring streak was Dustin Brown who had a six-game streak from Jan. 17 to Jan. 31, 2009. But with 20 seconds from a win, Loui Eriksson scored off of a neutral zone faceoff win to send the game to overtime. Steve Ott gave the Stars the overtime win.
LAst Night's Action: No Blues for the Kings
Mike Richards with a goal and an assist helps lead the Kings to their fifth victory in seven games. Jonathan Bernier in his first start since Nov. 8 gave up a shaky goal in the first shot of the game. But he recovered to save 23 shots including 14 in the second period.
LAst Night's Action: Middle Tennessee Overwhelms Bruins
Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders defeat UCLA Bruins 86-66. Middle Tennessee must really love Southern California. After beating Loyola Marymount on Sunday, they take a stinky dump all over the Bruins in their septic tank of an arena.
LAst Night's Action: Ducks Score Four in Second Period, Clings to Victory against Vancouver
Anaheim Ducks defeat Vancouver Canucks 4-3. The Ducks did Friday night what the Kings couldn’t do Thursday night: beat the Canucks. Despite a four-goal second period with Jonas Hiller shutting out the Canucks to that point, the Ducks barely hung on when Vancouver outshot Anaheim 22-2 in that final period with goals by Kevin Bieksa and two by Jannik Hansen.
LAst Night's Action: Prince Averts Disaster for UCLA
UCLA Bruins defeat Washington State Cougars 28-25. Call it a failure of Washington State’s offense to complete drives. Call it UCLA’s defense playing big when it counted. Call it a complete rebirth of quarterback Kevin Prince. But UCLA gets back to the .500 mark overall and 2-1 in the Pac-12 eking out a victory over the Cougars.
LAst Night's Action: Trojans Get Horned
Arizona State defeat Sun Devils defeat USC Trojans 43-22. You could sense this lurking in the shadows for the Trojans. They had a hard time closing out Minnesota and Utah in the first two weeks of the season. While they looked dominant last week, it was against an awful Big East team in Syracuse.
How Do You Solve a Problem Like UCLA?
It really is a shame. The Rose Bowl is a gorgeous place to catch a football game. Set in amongst the hills in Pasadena, knowing the history of the stadium, it is breathtaking.
LAst Night's Action: Trojans Have Another Cardiac Win
Against a more formidable opponent than the Golden Gophers of Minnesota, it looked to be more of the same for the Trojans: the Trojans should have had a commanding lead in the fourth quarter only to be denied by their own hubris.
LAst Night's Action: It's All About Preparation
One of the causes of hemorrhoids is increased intra-abdominal pressure - in other words, too much straining. With all the clenched assholes around USC and UCLA during their first games of the season, I certainly hope both programs have a healthy stock of Preparation-H.
NCAA Basketball: The Tears of Madness
After the field of 68 college basketball teams was announced yesterday for the annual Tournament, almost on cue was the annual backlash against the committee’s decisions. They weren’t arguing about the No. 1 seeds mind you - almost universally Ohio St., Pittsburgh, Kansas and Duke were accepted as among the best four teams in the country. All of this hubbub has been saved for Virginia Tech and Colorado.
LAst Night's Action: Clips Snip 'Cats
LA Clippers defeat Charlotte Bobcats 92-87. It was a close game, but the Clippers emerged and held on to a lead in the waning minutes. Blake Griffin and Mo Williams led the Clips with 17 points while Griffin added 15 rebounds. Chris Kaman had a double-double off the bench with 16 points and ten assists while point guard Eric Bledsoe had 13 points from the bench.
LAst Night's Action: Kings Tie Franchise Points Mark in Shootout Loss in NY
It wasn't a win, but it did give the Kings a point to tie a franchise record.
After a goal by Arten Anisimov with 3:08 left in the gave to give the Rangers a 3-2 lead, it looked like the Kings wouldn't be able to tie their 1974 mark of getting a point in 11 consecutive games. But the Kings finally did what teams had done to them all season long - come right back and score. Just 47 seconds later, Dustin Brown from behind the goal line stuffed the puck in the net past goalie Henrik Lundqvist.
Extra, Extra
Tonight's Extra, Extra brings updates on bus gropers, a downtown streetcar, the very brief employment of UCLA's former defensive coordinator, and the health of our city. Plus: Keep up with us on Facebook, and follow us on Twitter: @LAist @LAistFood @LAistSports.
LAst Night's Action: Quick Sands Wings
LA Kings defeat Detroit Red Wings 5-0. If there was ever a time when the score doesn’t indicate what went on in this game, it’s this one.
The Kings were utterly dominated by the Wings through two periods giving up 38 shots-on-goal, 26 in the second period alone, while getting only 17. Yet there they were leading 2-0 thanks to Jonathan Quick dominant performance in the net.
LAist-CS Final Regular Season Rankings: The Slap-and-Tickle Battle of L.A.
I don’t know what’s more embarrassing: the stabbing in the parking lot of the Rose Bowl or the game itself.
Led by Allen Bradford’s 212 yards of rushing and a 47-yard touchdown catch, the Trojans won the Battle of L.A. While that’s all fine and dandy, anyone that watched the third quarter would have wished they were at STAPLES Center watching the Kings beat the Red Wings.
Here’s what happened in the third quarter: UCLA Kickoff; USC punt; UCLA interception; USC interception; UCLA fumble; USC turnover on downs; UCLA punt; USC interception; UCLA punt; end of quarter. For the crimes committed against football, both teams should have been assessed losses and the Victory Bell should have been shipped to Division III Occidental Tigers.
LAst Night's Action: Massacre à Montréal
Montreal Canadiens defeat LA Kings 4-1. Quelle tragédie! Les Rois perdus à Montréal. Les Habitantes a mieux joué que les Rois. With all due respect to the Quebecois and other French-speaking hockey fans, that’s the extent of my knowledge of French. Je suis désolé.
LAst Night's Action: Bruins Bowl Empty
Washington Huskies defeat UCLA Bruins 24-7. After dueling three-and-outs, the Bruins capped a 13-play, 92-yard drive with a 31-yard touchdown run from Johnathan Franklin for a 7-0 lead.
LAst Night's Action: Lakers Outshoot Bucks
LA Lakers defeat Milwaukee Bucks 118-107. Defense? The Lakers showed they weren’t all that interested in defense making it look like they would need another last-second Kobe Bryant jumper in overtime to beat the Bucks at the Bradley Center as was the case on Dec. 16, 2009.
LAst Night's Action: Kings Shark-Bitten
San Jose Sharks defeat LA Kings 6-3. The Kings came into the game leading the Western Conference in points and with a six-game win streak, but they came out flat-footed up in the Shark Tank in San Jose. The Kings, thanks to the Sharks forecheck, kept turning the puck over on their blue line. Of course goalie Jonathan Bernier’s inability to freeze the puck didn’t help things either.
LAst Night's Action: Clippers Break Lawler's Law
Detroit Pistons defeat LA Clippers 113-107 (OT). Lawler’s Law failed. Thank to Rasual Butler’s three-pointer with 29 seconds remaining in regulation, the Clippers took a 102-99 lead. But a Ryan Gomes missed free throw and an Eric Gordon turnover allowed the Pistons to send the game to overtime where they prevailed 113-107.
LAst Night's Action: Trojans, Bruins Kick Their Way to Victory
USC Trojans defeat Arizona State Sun Devils 34-33. A failed extra point was the difference in this game.
LAst Night's Action: Oregon Topples Trojans
Oregon Ducks defeat USC Trojans 53-32. The Trojans made a valiant attempt to stay with the Ducks, but the Ducks’ offense was just too much to overcome as the Trojans fell to No. 1 Oregon 53-32.
LAst Night's Action: Duck, Duck, Coyote
#1 Oregon Ducks defeat UCLA Bruins 60-13. Oregon made sure they didn’t repeat Alabama’s and Ohio State’s mistakes being felled as the top-ranked team of the country. Granted they racked up “only” 582 yards of offense, but they held the Bruins to 290 yards of total offense in their rout of UCLA.
LAst Night's Action: USC Sunk By Field Goal Again
#16 Stanford Cardinal defeat USC Trojans 37-35. The second verse was the same as the first. After being unable to stop the Washington Huskies from traveling down the field for a game winning field goal, USC do the same thing again as Andrew Luck and the Stanford offense marched down the field for the game winning 30-yard field goal.
LAst Night's Action: UCLA Does What Was Expected of Them
UCLA Bruins defeat Washington State Cougars 48-24. The final score made it look like it was an easy enough win for the Bruins, but it was anything but. The Bruins fell asleep allowing Wazzu to take a 28-20 lead in the third quarter. The offense finally woke up midway through the third quarter going on a 67-yard touchdown drive that took up four minutes and got the two-point conversion to tie the game.
LAst Night's Action: John Ely Struck Down in Dodgers' Loss
Arizona Diamondbacks defeat LA Dodgers 5-2. John Ely and the strike zone still aren’t seeing eye-to-eye with Ely allowing six walks to Diamondbacks’ hitters. After Stephen Drew scored on Tony Abreu’s sacrifice fly in the fifth inning to tie the game 1-1, Cole Gillespie gave the D-Backs the 4-1 lead with a three run homer off of Ely in the sixth inning.
UCLA Upsets No. 7 Texas 34-12 in Austin
Holy shit. The last time UCLA went into Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium in Austin facing the then-No. 10 Texas Longhorns in 1997, the Bruins routed the favored Longhorns 66-3. It resulted in the ouster of head coach John Mackovic and the start of the Mack Brown era. So after today’s 34-12 upset win by the Bruins, what now?
