U2's guitarist, The Edge (aka David Evans), has joined other property owners and is suing state regulators "after they rejected a proposal to build a cluster of mansions in Malibu," reports ABC Local. The National Park Service is also opposed to the project saying the development would "scar the expansive ridgeline

Metrolink Adds Discounted Trains to U2 Angel Stadium Concerts
The seemingly neverending 360 Tour brings U2 to Angel Stadium on Friday and Saturday night. With fans expected to come from all corners of Southern California, traffic will be a mess, especially coinciding with Friday rush hour. If you're going to the show, try to carpool or -- better yet -- take the train.
No Mansions on the Horizon: U2's The Edge Barred from Building on Malibu Hillside
The California Coastal Commission on Thursday rejected the guitarist's proposal to build a five-mansion development on 156 hillside acres along the Malibu coast. The 8-4 vote by the commission put to rest years of contentious debate between city officials, residents and the beanie-wearing rock legend legally known as David Evans.

The Edge Wants To Build On The Edge Of A Malibu Cliff
U2's technology-obsessed guitar virtuoso David Evans aka "The Edge" is in the middle of a mansion-building brouhaha in Malibu. Evans is looking to build five, ridge-top homes on a property situated above Malibu, but the California Coastal Commission believes the project would violate state law saying "the development would ruin a wild area and scar hillsides visible from Pacific Coast Highway," reports ABC Local.
Mayor Twitters About Lu at U2, Forgets What City He's In
Swept up in the good time-y vibes surely prevalent during last night's heavily-touted U2 concert at the Rose Bowl, Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa took a couple of opportunities to share his exuberance over the occasion via Twitter. Villaraigosa and his girlfriend, KTLA reporter Lu Parker, were among the approximately 96,000 fans who packed the Pasadena stadium to see one of the last engagements in the rock band's "360 Tour" with support from the Black Eyed Peas.
Tonight In Rock: U2, Tegan And Sara, The Parson Red Heads, Learning Music
Tonight legendary Dublin-bred alternative rockers U2 will be performing to a sold-out crowd at the Rose Bowl with none other than the Black Eyed Peas. Canadian singer-songwriters Tegan and Sara are poised to take on a two-night stint at the Orpheum Theatre in Downtown. And, lastly, local indie pop outfit the Parson Red Heads (LAist Review, #2, #3) will be gracing Casey's Irish Bar & Grill. But we strongly suggest heading over to the newly opened Bedrock Studios (LAist Interview) to catch local prolific songwriter John Wood, who performs under the pseudonym Learning Music. LA-based singer-songwriter Evan Way of the Parson Red Heads (LAist Review, #2, #3) is poised to perform as well.

Residents of Malibu are up in arms about U2 guitarist The Edge (nee David Evans) and his plans "to build five luxury homes in [the] hills" they believe "would devastate the area," according to On the Red Carpet.
TV Junkie: Give Fallon Time; Models vs. 'Lost' & 'Damages'
Critics are being rather forgiving of Jimmy Fallon's (only slightly shaky IMHO) "Late Night" debut: they brought out DeNiro who is always a tough interview and Fallon kind of made it work, and Timberlake kind of saved the first show - not sure why they had Van Morrison on, are they trying to reclaim the age 55-and-up demographic?
TV Junkie: CBS Renews Comedies; 'Nip/Tuck' Season Finale
Who watched the new "Late Night with Jimmy Fallon" last night? How did you like it? It's on our Tivo and we will watch it later but let us know.. We'll update you with the Nielsen numbers later this week - should be interesting.
TV Junkie: Jimmy Fallon Premieres in 'Late Night'; 'Saving Grace' Winter Premiere
Tonight marks a big debut in late night TV with the start of "Late Night with Jimmy Fallon". While we were concerned with the departure of Conan O'Brien from "Late Night", we think he can be very successful in the earlier slot. Jimmy Fallon, at 34 years-old, will be bringing some youth to the time slot, although both Carson Daly and Conan O'Brien were younger when they started their stints on late night television.
Interview: Jewelry Designer Sergio Gutierrez
Gutierrez holds a degree from the School of Electronic Engineering in Medellin, Colombia. He serves on the Board of Directors for Eyes of Innocence, a charity that benefits children worldwide.

Carrie Brownstein's "Monitor Mix" Blog
In my scouring for good things to read online, I've stumbled across (not actually Upon) a new favorite. Carrie Brownstein, former guitarist of one of my favorite bands, Sleater-Kinney, now writes for NPR's much commented-on new music blog, in a section called "Monitor Mix". She gets about 50 comments per post, no doubt partly due to her fame, but her writing is also really good in its own right. I've already discovered a couple new bands I like through Carrie, and identified with her on many occasions, in her musings on the new year, the use of theme songs by politicians - "It is noteworthy that U2's ubiquity has transformed their songs into ones that are both non-partisan and non-threatening, which at least in the aforementioned contexts skirts a little close to non-music" - musical pet peeves, and comments on where the music industry stands today versus earlier days. If you're not already a reader, check it out.

Tonight at the Jazz Bakery is the The Alternative String Group, an ensemble of students from Robert Anderson and Jacob Szekely's music school in West Hollywood, The String Project | Los Angeles. Both studio musicians who have worked with the likes of the Dakah Hip-Hop Orchestra and SuperNova, the two have put together a conservatory that is pretty high tech with their interactive music lessons, recording and filming them for student's personal analysis... The concert will feature solo and small group performances of music by legends such as The Grateful Dead, Jay-Z, Thelonious Monk, Carlos Santana, U2, Jimi Hendrix, James Brown, and more. It's what you've gotta do for rock & roll, you know?
In 1987, U2 did a little guerrilla music video shoot on top of the Republic Liquor Store at 7th and Main in Downtown Los Angeles. Only announced hours before the shoot on the radio, thousands and thousands of fans poured into what many considered a bad part of town prompting the LAPD to have a little freak out and try shut down the show before anything happened. Luckily, in the name of rock n'...
Raise a Colortini for Tom
It seems unlikely that I actually saw it, but I’d swear to you that I was up on the night that Wendy O. Williams of the Plasmatics destroyed a car on the Tomorrow Show. I would have been nearing the end of eighth grade and I can’t imagine that my parents let me stay up, but it sure feels like I did. That’s the problem and the beauty of current technology. We can’t really remember...

Monday Night Football brought some love to New Orleans the day after yesterday as the city re-opened the Super Dome. Lone Justice - Sweet Sweet Baby (I'm Falling)
David Geffen won the bidding war in the mid '80s to nab the country-tinged LA band Lone Justice and their self-titled debut came out to much hype. Everyone was fixated on the blonde singer, Maria McKee, whose voice was often compared to both Dolly Parton and Janis Joplin as the songs went from bluesy to hillbilly with a solid foundation in rock. Record sales didn't meet expectations despite being overwhelmingly loved by critics, fans,...
When will LA get an Improv Everywhere outpost?
They've dressed up in blue shirts and khakis and started helping people at Best Buy, they pretended to be U2 playing on a roof, and now they've decided to go to a Home Depot and either stand still for 5 minutes or move in super-slow-motion.
