There are just a few days left to participate in the James Perse t-shirt recycling program "What Comes Around Goes Around." The promotion works like this: Donate your old Perse tees, get store credit, give recycled super lux basics to homeless families.

Anti-War T-Shirt Prompts Law that Schwarzenegger Signs
A famous celebrity's name is protected for 70 years after death. That's because a "deceased personality," as state law calls them, has commercial value, thus the use of their voice, signature, photograph, or likeness in products and advertising is verboten unless permission by the family is given. Those laws don't apply to regular people, even if their death made them famous -- the law only applied to those who had notoriety before death, not because of or after death.
LAist On Location: Noise Pop Fest 2010 Day Five (Part 1)
Yes, that's part ONE, because for the final segment of our thrilling account of Noise Pop Fest 2010, we've not one, but two exciting adventures to share with you, o dear readers. Saturday, February 27th found us first at Pop n' Shop, a Noise Pop sponsored boutique seller and craft fair, similar in spirit, if not in scope, to our own twice-yearly Unique La. Held at the very old school Verdi Club, SF based artists, clothiers, jewelers and toy/doll makers turned out in force to ply their goods. Later that night, we hit the Mezzanine, where we saw a concert of mind blowing brilliance.
2K by Gingham: Artist-Driven T-Shirts
Los Angeles blazes the trail when it comes to the t-shirt. The lightweight garment wears ideally for our SoCal weather, and it’s casual versatility is locked in a cultural groove. We’re home to the $1,850 t-shirt, numerous eye-sore trendy brands, and a slew of feaux-vintage, nearly-ironic t’s whose wearer looks the butt of a silent joke. Thankfully those aren’t our only options.
w00t, There It Is
So Merriam-Webster's word of the year is w00t. Sort of uninspiring, right? As in, aren't there thousands of other words that communicate so much more, mean so much more than the gamer battle-cry for "yes! i just killed your guy and i still have seven lives left!"?!?!? Surely there are more important things that happened in the word world than this, we kept thinking. Surely there were actual words that should have won. "Facebook" was...
The Problem with Joe's
I've been pretty excited about Joe's Pizza opening in Santa Monica, so today, we forded crowded, traffic heavy Santa Monica to get a slice. Their new LA outpost is a small storefront next door to a place that sells t-shirts to tourist. The space is spare, functional, white, with a marble counter set in front of the small kitchen. By the time we got there, it was fairly crowded, and we had to wait...

Enchanted Royals Launch Party Tonight @ Mountain Bar
Looking for something fun to do this crisp Monday night before Halloween? Look no further, one of our favorite independent design companies, Enchanted Royals, who we highlighted almost a year ago for their adorable hand painted sneakers, T-Shirts and baby onesies, is having their website launch party tonight in Chinatown.
Read This Book: The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao
When's the last time a book made you cry? And I don't mean a slight welling in the tear ducts, I don't mean a sniffle here or there, I mean a REAL god damn cry, the leaky, sobbing, snotty kind of cry, the likes of which you haven't experienced since your fourth grade teacher read Where the Red Fern Grows aloud to the class and even the boys were sniveling into their t-shirts when...
LAist Interview: The Hacienda Mafia
I met up with the Hacienda Prints Collective at the opening night of the Chemical Brothers tour at the Hammerstein Ballroom in NYC. There they were, a trio of guys from LA at an incredible event in NYC, doing live screening of t-shirts commemorating the night. Not only were they doing t-shirts, they were also taking lots of pics (see to the left) as well as documenting the tour on video. They were on...
The Swerve Festival: Day One with Photos

Nike Run Hit Remix 2007: More Fun than Run
Yesterday morning 10,000 runners (this LAist poster and a few friends included) took to the streets of Downtown Los Angeles for the 5-mile Nike Run Hit Remix 2007. The sea of red t-shirts running from the Coliseum to Staples Center and back was an awesome sight in itself, but the runners were also treated to a crystal blue sky canopy overhead. While it was already a bit too hot at the 9 am race...
El Chupacabra Found in Texas?
The top e-mailed story from the Los Angeles Times website today was "Mythical Chupacabra Found in Texas?" Some of us know exactly what a chupacabra is thanks to a 1997 X-Files episode "El Mundo Gira." Sort of: It's a creature that supposedly either looks like a weird wild dog or a lizard-like alien. First reported in Puerto Rico, there've been spottings in Mexico and the U.S. The name translates to "goat sucker," and it...
How Paul Frank Lost His Name
Poor Paul Sunich. First he lost his monkey. Now he's lost his middle name. Costa Mesa-based Paul Frank Sunich, creator of the ubiquitous Julius the Monkey icon, can no longer put his name on T-shirts, according to a 16-page ruling yesterday by an Orange County U.S. District Court judge. Paul Frank Industries (PFI) prevailed in a trademark infringement lawsuit against the designer, who last year after a falling-out with the company he co-founded ten years...
Great Cause + Tax Write-Off = Pit Tix
It doesn't get much better than this. For those of you looking to score a (legal) break on your 2007 taxes, 93.1 Jack FM is offering 50 pairs of tax-deductible pit tickets for "Jack's Second Show." The concert will take place on Aug. 18 at the Verizon Wireless Amphitheater and will feature Stevie Nicks, ZZ Top, Sugar Ray, Stray Cats and The Pretenders.
Does This Logo Look Like Lisa Simpson on her Knees?
Dear London. Why hast thou forsaken us? We realize that you hate us for our freedoms and for our superior dental hygiene. But why would you take the innocence and intellect of Lisa Simpson and do that for her just so that you could sell a few more million 2012 Olympic t-shirts? We could have sworn that they have The Simpsons across the pond, was there nobody in the room who snickered when this...
Tonight! Big Daddy Roth Art Opening at La Luz
Are you old enough to be nostalgic for "Car Toons" comics? Or young enough to wonder what the deal is with Rat Fink? Tonight's art opening for original Big Daddy Roth artwork at La Luz De Jesus is a can't miss event for children of all ages. Big Daddy Roth's characters fathered a movement Howie Pyro refers to as lowbrow/pop surrealism. Roth mentored and inspired artists such as Robert Williams and Ed Newton, not to mention an entire generation of unnamed PeeChee folder doodlers.
Vin Scully on the Music of Memorial Day
If it seems like Vin Scully has been doing Dodger games forever, that's because this is his 50th season broadcasting LA Dodger games (1958-2007) and his 57th as a Dodger announcer. He's one of the few major broadcasters who works alone in the booth. No color man needed, no ex-jocks, no sidekick. The only problem with that is sometimes he can casually blow you away with precise diction and perfect tone, and sometimes the...
Dublab and The LA Record Concoct A Community Record Fair
Come out and support local music labels and artists at A Community Record Fair, presented by Dublab and The LA Record this Sunday, May 20 at The Echoplex. Record labels, stores, DJs and independent collectors will offer new and used vinyl, CDs, DVDs, cassettes and collectible rarities. Visual artists, bookstores and clothing designers will also present their creative gems at special prices. For artist olive47, who designed the stuffed creatures above, this will be one of her last appearances in LA as she prepares to move to London. "I'm selling plush dolls, handscreened T-shirts, prints, stickers and badges," she says.
Stay Classy, Los Angeles
This video was posted by a disturbed San Diego fan after seeing some not-so-classy behavior in Chavez Ravine. Not that rowdy fans are anything new, but something about the tone of LA fans should be improved. We all expect Dodger Stadium to start clearing out in the seventh inning, except for those fans who sauntered in around the fourth and still haven't finished their Dodger Dog. As if the local reputation for bandwagon fans...
Weekly Movie Picks: Subtitle Film Fest, Jon Jost, Suspiria, Westerns & More
Grindhouse The Girl from Starship Venus (AKA The Sexplorer) is a space nudie starring Monika Ringwald as an astronaut from Venus who lands in London's swinging Soho district circa 1975. Her mission? To research sex customs on the planet Earth. This is paired with The Legend of the Wolf Woman, a 1976 horror film from Italy whose title pretty much says it all. A beautiful woman seeks men out, has sex with them then turns...
LAst Night's Action: Chicago Goes Down
Clipper 103, Bulls 89 - The struggling Clippers defeated a strong Chicago squad despite missing Sam Cassell due to injury. Cuttino Mobley led the way with 25, followed by Corey Maggette with 22. Elton Brand had 21 and 12 rebounds. Los Angeles is essentially even with Golden State for the eighth and final spot in the Western Conference playoffs. Three teams (Dallas, Pheonix, and San Antonio) are already in. Dodgers - LAist discovers that beer...
Toys for the Cool Kids
Outside the Standard Downtown on Thursday night was a two-hour wait wrapping around the corner, a flashy red carpet, and huge security guards keeping attendees in order. With a quick passing, one would most likely think Hollywood’s A-list celebs and socialites were inside swanking it up, but in reality, the mega-event was in celebration of the release of Kidrobot’s new toy, the “Hello My Name Is Dunny,” seen above.
Perez Hilton Caught Stealing Again
In a bizarre attempt to fund his defense of the $7 million lawsuit being launched against him by several paparazzi organizations because he steals their photos, Perez Hilton today released some new items of merch. The only problem is, two of the designs are blatant rip-offs of artwork created for an interview our Canadian sister-site Torontoist conducted with the controversial LA gossip queen last fall. According to Torontoist, Perez approached the Ontarians to design...
Troy in B-Ruins
Crosstown congratulations go to UCLA. They had a good D and an even better W. They earned it. USC suffered from uninspired play-calling and some might argue that they were looking past their arch-rival, a two touchdown underdog who hadn't beaten the Trojans since Monica Lewinsky was an intern. In reality, UCLA proved why rivalry games have nothing to do with the size of the dog in the fight, but with the size of...
World Aids Day 2006 at UCLA
Students from North Campus (Arts & Humanities) walked across campus today singing songs of hope for AIDS awareness. They warmly greeted students walking to and from class by handing out t-shirts and asking them to join in and walk. “The ‘Kiss and Tell’ theme is about re-affirming safe sexual practices and is also about everyone knowing how this is affecting others all around the world.” – Dana Helwick, coordinator for Students for International Change....
A Quick Guide to L.A. Dog Park Etiquette
One of the great benefits of Los Angeles weather to man and beast is the year round use of Dog parks. As a playground for hounds and a social gathering hot spot for owners, dog parks provide an enjoyable, mostly incident free outing at any given time of day. The odds are there is one near you that hopefully is not being tested for radiation like the one in Brentwood. However like any community there...
