TV Junkie: 2009 Emmys - Talking Fashion with Carrie Preston of 'True Blood' & '90210' Star AnnaLynne McCord

The TV Junkie is not a fashion guy. He looks to North Face's wicking microfibers because in this heat he sweats. He is a sweaty guy wearing frumpy, if not comfortable clothes, so he was somewhat out of his element at the Mondrian Hotel yesterday, where their Skybar was hosting "Emmy Suites", a collection of designers and cosmetics services targeting Emmy-party-bound performers and celebs.

The series will air on the CBC network in January 2010 but no word on if/how/when the series will air on US TV. --- The TV Junkie will be going on hiatus next week to rest his weary eyeballs. We'll post a "must-see" list for the week along with some other recommendations. Thank you so much for reading! We'll be back by the 30th.

TV Junkie: 'Mad Men' Season Premiere on Sunday, no duh

Weekend Edition What we can't ignore, even if we wanted to, is this Sunday's season premiere of "Mad Men" on AMC at 10pm. The "Mad Men" hype machine has been in overdrive for over a month with Banana Republic promotions, avatar generators, Esquire pictorials, Wall Street Journal profiles, Jon Hamm et al appearances on Conan/Fallon/etc. and tonight cast members of "Mad Men" will make a (doubtless hilarious and self-deprecating) appearance on E!'s "The Soup" at 10pm. We're going to be watching the premiere on Sunday - watch for the trending topic on Twitter fo sho. We also thank Jah there is no programming conflict between "True Blood" and "Mad Men".

TV Junkie: True Blood for Sale; 'Seinfeld' Reunion

TV Junkie: More 'Pain' from Perry; Wanna Be on 'Mad Men'? Weekend Summary

While we are excited to geek out with a new "Doctor Who" on Sunday, we're also looking forward to Fallon tonight which has two guests that we've interviewed for LAist: Bob Saget and John Mulaney.

TV Junkie: Letterman Ahead; 'Futurama' ...not

Weekend Edition When it comes to late night TV, Letterman is definitely pulling ahead in terms of sheer numbers, about 800k more viewers per night than Conan. But Conan is scoring much higher in the coveted 18-49 demographic, to which NBC is saying, "I meant to do that". We mentioned a few weeks ago that "Futurama" might be coming back, but now rumor has it that if it returns it will be without the original cast of voices, to which, we would say, what's the point then?

TV Junkie: 'Entourage' Returns on Sunday, following 'True Blood' & 'Hung'

Weekend Edition The big deal this weekend is the return of the juvenile and entertaining "Entourage" - "True Blood" returns after a holiday break as well as the positively-reviewed "Hung". HBO owns Sundays, no doubt about it. | If you're following the Tour, get your fill this weekend because Monday is a rest day.

TV Junkie: Cronkite Ill; Conan vs. Letterman Gets Tight

Weekend Edition Our thoughts are with the family of veteran newsman, Walter Cronkite, who is reportedly gravely ill. If you were a kid in the '70s, chances are that Cronkite is still the voice and face of the news to you. | The late night battle between Letterman and Conan is getting tighter. Conan still has a slight lead but this is rapidly closing and the two should achieve parity in the next few weeks but we're heading into summer which usually means viewers will spend a few less hours in front of the TV.

TV Junkie: 'Daily Show' Reports from Iran Next Week; 'Saving Grace' Returns Tonight

If you liked "The Colber(t) Repor(t)" reporting from Iraq last week, you will probably enjoy Jason Jones of "The Daily Show" reporting from Iran Monday through Thursday next week. Although not everyone thinks HBO's "True Blood" is the cat's pajamas, Sunday's premiere made the show the most watched program on HBO since the series finale of "The Sopranos".

TV Junkie: 'True Blood' Season Premiere on Sunday

Sure we have "The Soup" and a handful of choice regular programs this weekend, but what it's all about is the season premiere of "True Blood" at 9pm on Sunday on HBO. The buzz about this show has been building steadily since last season ended with most people catching up by either buying season one or renting it on Netflix. Here we are, the moment is about to happen - we've been invited to 2 viewing parties on Sunday, how about yourself? We're anticipating a lot of hungover viewers straggling into work on Sunday as there's something about vampires that makes people want to cut loose. Check out the HBO "True Blood" page, complete with a countdown counted in drops of blood.

Paleyfest 2009: True Blood Panel

At 5 p.m. last Tuesday, the line for the True Blood panel at PaleyFest snaked around the Cinerama Dome toward the Arclight entrance. Many of the predominantly female fans of the HBO series had been camped out since early afternoon, traveling from as far as Texas and New York.

PaleyFest 2009 Preview: Battlestar Galactica, Dr. Horrible, True Blood, Pushing Daisies and More

This year's annual William S. Paley Television Festival (also known as PaleyFest) will feature some LAist favorites. The up close and personal television event is sponsored by the Paley Center for Media, and begins April 10 at the ArcLight Cinerama Dome. Tickets go on sale to the public Sunday at 9 a.m. and they're likely to sell out within 24 hours, if not sooner. Most PaleyFest events treat fans to clips from each program (sometimes never-before-seen material) and include a panel discussion with questions from a moderator and the audience. In addition, each panel page on the PaleyFest website now includes an option for fans to submit questions prior to the event. This year's lineup is a strong one and it features: It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, 90210, True Blood, Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog, Dollhouse, The Big Bang Theory, The Mentalist, Desperate Housewives, Unaired Pushing Daisies Episodes, Battlestar Galactica, The Hills, Big Love, Fringe and Swingtown.

If you faithfully watched the first season of "True Blood" on HBO this Fall, then you'll remember Fangtasia, the vampire bar set in Shreveport, Louisiana. The true setting of the bar isn't too far off from reality, in alternative theme at least. It's actually Alex's Bar in Long Beach which is one of the top venues for punk music in the Los Angeles area. LAist has visited them a number of times for shows and is happy to see the great venue used for a great show (also a candy-crack easy-to-read addicting book series by Charlaine Harris).

A couple season finales happen this Sunday on HBO. Ironically, "True Blood" finishes its first season on the weekend that the film "Twilight" premieres. Somehow the hype machine has ensured that "Twilight" will be a big hit this weekend even though it is nothing more than a teen romance movie with marginal acting and poor writing. In contrast, "True Blood" has been a rollercoaster with some great character development and performances, ensuring that we will eagerly await its return.

Looks like "60 Minutes" scored the first post-election interview with President-elect Barack Obama - it will air on Sunday at 7:00pm on CBS.

Looks like HBO will buy a documentary on president-elect Barack Obama and will air it in 2009. The documentary was produced by actor Edward Norton's production company, Class 5 Films, and was bought "in the seven-figure range". A nice bet by Norton paid off evidently.

Senator Barack Obama's Wednesday night appearance on Comedy Central's "The Daily Show with Jon Stewart" scored the show's biggest audience ever. Let's see what tonight's appearance by Alaska Governor Sarah Palin does for ABC's "20/20" as well as tomorrow night's Senator John McCain cameo effect on NBC's "Saturday Night Live".

It's a Jon Hamm/"Mad Men" weekend: on Saturday, the man who plays Don Draper will be hosting "Saturday Night Live" and Sunday brings us the season finale of the mult-Emmy-winning show from AMC. Both are a must watch.

If you're not heading home to hit the bottle hard after this week, more power to you. I'm not sure what solace TV will provide this weekend, what with "The Starter Wife", that, despite all the heavy hype, looks less than funny.

This weekend it's all about the Emmies. Being the elitist anti-populists, we are hoping that critical faves win out over the dreck. For drama, it would be nice if Emmies went to "Mad Men", "Damages", "Breaking Bad" and "The Wire". For comedy, some of the following should be winning winged statues: "Flight of the Conchords", "The Office", "Weeds", "It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia", and "30 Rock".

HBO's new series True Blood is based on the series of books by Charlaine Harris, about a world where vampires have emerged from the shadows to claim equal rights in human society, prompted by the invention of a synthetic blood drink that removes their need to hunt humans. In this world, vampires are exciting and intriguing, dangerous but sexy, and their blood has enjoyable drug-like effects on humans, so we now have people who actively try to seduce vampires, and even people who attack them to drain their blood and sell it. The story is set in a small imaginary town in Louisiana called Bon Temps (as in Laissez les Bon Temps Roulez), and features a bleached-blond Anna Paquin as Sookie, a young waitress with the inexplicable ability to read minds, who falls in love with Stephen Moyer's chivalrous, brooding vampire named Bill. Yes, Bill. It beats Sookie...

Recession? What recession? NBC reportedly has almost sold out of ad spots for the 2009 Super Bowl and are selling the spots at prices at least 11% higher than last year.

Evanglelical totem, Sarah Palin, drew over 37 million viewers on Wednesday night, according to a report in the New York Times. This number is just shy of Obama’s record-setting 38.4 million viewers from last week's acceptance speech, dwarfed Joseph Biden's 13 million, and probably eclipsed John S. McCain's as well. Superstar or freakshow?
