All Lanes of 5 South Shut Down after Big Rig Jackknifes

An early morning rush-hour accident has prompted the closure of all southbound lanes of the 5 Freeway in the Santa Clarita Valley this morning. At about 5 a.m., a big rig traveling southbound jackknifed near Calgrove Boulevard, blocking lanes and impacting one of two routes out of the valley. At 7:47 a.m., the city of Santa Clarita sent a text message alert to residents saying lanes were still closed until further notice. That means to travel to the San Fernando Valley will mainly come via the 14 Freeway and The Old Road.

The truck driver who killed two people and injured twelve when his vehicle careened into a La Canada Flintridge intersection was spared the possibility of murder charges today. A Pasadena Superior Court judge said there was insufficient evidence that Marcos Barbosa Costa, 44, had intent to kill people, according to the Daily News. However, he will still face vehicular manslaughter and reckless driving charges.

Green Truck Cited by LAPD on Wilshire [Updated]

It only took four minutes for the LAPD to show up after The Green Truck's General Manager, Bobby Allen, pulled up to the curb on Wilshire for the lunch hour. The truck's health permit, although paid for, was not on display because the LA County Health Department was late in sending out bills and permits, explained Allen. But officers would not accept a note from the Health Department that should have excused the Green Truck from being cited and shut down. The truck can only open back up for business when they have proof they paid for the permit.

A handful of workers affected by the recent decrease in lunch options on the Miracle Mile have begun a petition to stop restaurants from calling city officials and police on "designer trucks" who park in the area. "We, the undersigned request that the brick and mortar restaurants in the area known as Miracle Mile cease and desist from any attempt to impede or hinder any mobile food preparation units or food trucks from operating in the area," the petition reads.

The Next Mobile Food Truck: Johnny Rockets

Orange County based Johnny Rockets is launching two mobile food trucks, but you won't find them in California until later. The fast food American fare chain restaurant is taking the mobile truck model and doing it franchise style. "Each mini-burger truck will have a 22 foot kitchen and a 14 foot trailer. Each is designed to provide a condensed Johnny Rockets menu consisting of hamburgers, shakes, fries, hot dogs, chicken tenders and maybe even onion rings," explains the Orange County Register. The first truck will hit the streets in Ashburn, VA, home of the Washington Redskins training facility--Johnny Rocket's parent company RedZone Capital also owns the football team. The second truck will found in... the Middle East.

LAistory: The Helms Bakery Coaches

These days we're all a-Twitter about food on wheels. From comforting classics like ice cream novelties to tacos with an Korean twist, we seem to love the idea of finding food on our own two feet and the vendors' four wheels. But before Los Angeles was a tangle of freeways and cars getting food items from a truck was actually a way of life. While some of us may still live in neighborhoods frequented by produce and grocery trucks issuing familiar beckoning musical calls, beeps, and horn toots, once upon a time in L.A. our city's bread and other baked treats could be found driving around SoCal 'hoods in the form of the Helms Bakery Coaches.

Before there was Kogi BBQ, there was Twitter. After there was Kogi BBQ, there were a good number of new food trucks and other mobile eats with Twitter in the business plan. A street food revolution? Something like that. Earlier this week, LAist Twitter followers helped us compile this list. So here it is, in all its yummy glory! If we missed anything, let us know in the comments.

Even the Girl Scouts Warned Caltrans About the Dangers

After yesterdays deadly crash that left two dead and twelve injured, the LA Times finds that a girl scout made a powerpoint presentation (part 1, part 2) for the city of La Canada Flintridge and Caltrans prompted by a similar crash last September that destroyed seven cars and injured one. The city also had been pressing for changes after the incident, but they said Caltrans kept on delaying a study. The girl scout, Malia Mailes, said Caltrans at first told her September's incident was isolated and did nothing until the city began to bring pressure to the state agency. "Now I want to try to see if Caltrans is going to do something to help our community solve this issue," she told the Times. "This accident was completely preventable, and if Caltrans had listened to the city's pleas, maybe this accident might not have happened."

Traffic snarled in the San Gabriel Valley for at least 10 miles after a big rig tanker truck early this morning filpped over blocking all lanes of the eastbound 210 Freeway. At approximately 5:41 a.m., a call came in reporting the incident at Azusa Ave. which appears to be a solo crash with no injuries. The truck is carrying 50,000 pounds of liquid asphalt material and some of it has spilled out, said California Highway Patrol Office Francisco Villalobos over the phone. A small amount of diesel fuel also leaked.

The CHP told the LA Times that the tractor license plate is 7556776 and a trailer license plate is GT66777.

If you were going to Comic-Con or just heading towards San Diego, today's truck crash/fire was not helpful (should have taken the train, the Surfliner to San Diego is a beautiful and chill ride). This morning, "a Vons big rig crashed into a disabled vehicle on southbound Interstate 5 near Pulgas Road, flipped over and burst into flames... leaving all but one lane of southbound I-5 blocked for hours," according to the San Diego Union-Tribune. Apparently, Vons was "en route" to "recover their product." Okay, then. Look out for any pre-charred ribs the next time you're at Vons.

The United States Postal Service furthered its efforts to embrace new, green technologies this week, even as these technologies eat away at the USPS' age-old business model of letter delivery.

In Sunday's wee hours, an unusual car chase took place on our local freeways, between the LA County Sheriff and a Vons big rig. According to the San Jose Mercury News:

Officials say the hourlong pursuit began when LA County Sheriff's deputies responded to a report that a big rig was weaving.
