by Joe King, from Pyle of List. No, this isn't about Pete Carroll returning to the NFL. That would definitely be time to panic, maybe even call the National Guard...if they're back from Iraq yet. This is about the first USC-UCLA game of the college basketball season. This is important people. Both teams played well in last year's NCAA tournament. Both teams had high expectations before the season started. Both teams had blue-chip freshman that......

Article by Adam Rose and Ryan Jesena. UCLA has officially announced Rick Neuheisel as their new head football coach. Neuheisel was a walk-on quarterback for the Bruins and led them to the 1984 Rose Bowl victory against Illinois. He has a very successful track record coaching at the college level (66-30) but has spent the past few years clunking around the NFL assistant ranks. As a graduate assistant with UCLA, he was credited for the......

For baseball fans under the age of 35, reading the Mitchell report should be like taking repeated shots to the groin without the Nutty Buddy. With 75 names and guys who get shipped all over the country, you know your idols didn't escape. Me? I grew up in NorCal. Matt Williams? He was our hero on the hot-corner. Glenallen Hill? The only pro player from the small town I was growing up in. That's a......

Did anyone else catch SciFi's Tin Man last night? Definitely worth watching into Part Deux (they will repeat Part One at 7:00pm). I wish I could say the same about Comedy Central's Last Laugh '07 - I love Lewis Black, Dave Attell, and D.L. Hughley, but they crammed their acts, a lengthy animated intro, and a Q/A session into one hour. The end result left a lot to be desired. 7:00pm David Copperfield TCM -......

By now you've probably heard that this year's Vegoose was a smashing success. Pretty much everything about the show was great; plenty of booze, food, facilities, and the availability of televised sports (for the adamant college football/NFL/World Series fans willing to miss their favorite bands to catch the score.) The crowd seemed highly content throughout the whole show, save for a few rumbles between Red Sox and Rockies fans. Lucky for us, LAist got......

Watching Nip/Tuck has always been a dirty and guilty pleasure. Season five of the show returns tonight on FX and McNamara/Troy are moving the business to our own Los Angeles (as if you haven't been pummeled incessantly by the promos for the last month, and particularly during the World Series). The overpromotion irritates me a bit because it can set up what has been a pretty good show for a fall. Since Nip/Tuck has always......

Idaho Sen. Larry Craig, who was arrested in June for soliciting gay sex in a Minnesota bathroom, announced on Saturday that he would resign his senate seat on Sept. 30. He had received intense pressure from the Republican party to take one for the team. According to a CNN story, Craig's announcement was called "the right decision" by Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, who had called the Idaho senator's actions "unforgivable." (LAist wants to......

Because no one was seriously injured in this afternoon's fire in West Hollywood, it's probably ok to bust with some tasteless jokes. But we wont lower ourselves to that level. In fact we won't even snicker that the fire started at 4:30pm, mere minutes after the infamous 420 which many in WeHo celebrate. (Here in EaHo we celebrate it too) Instead we will simply run this photo sent to us by Scott from Boi......

Dodgers 10, Houston 2 - Los Angeles has been consistently inconsistent since the All Star break, and didn't show true dominance until going on the road. Chad Billingsly improved to 7-0 with a complete game, and even held the Astros scoreless until the final out. The Dodgers also looked good at the plate, with 3 RBIs from both Luis Gonzalez and James Loney. Jeff Kent (who scored on a wild pitch) had four hits before......

As Beverly HIlls gets ready for their meeting tonight, Boi from Troy ponders about the city of West Hollywood being the only Westside city without any purple tunnel love:Rather than shoot straight down Wilshire–an easy proposal–why not consider taking to subway to places people want to go? Although we would have thought that there would be no safer place for a 13-year-old at one o'clock in the morning than a Las Vegas casino, comes news that early this morning a teen from Van Nuys was clipped by one of the ten "random" shots fired by a Vegas local. Troy Sanchez, a 13-year-old from Van Nuys, Calif., who was wounded in the left ankle, said he heard more than 10 gunshots from......

Yes, that's Alex Trebek. No, he hasn't lost it. The Jeopardy! College Championships are going down at the University of Southern California and it looks like he's feeling the Spirit of Troy. College students could always use some extra cash, so one smart-Alex is going to walk away with $100,000 to pay for books and Ramen a new plasma TV and Trump steaks. A potpourri of California schools have been represented on the program this......

D.C. United 2, Chivas USA 1 - The MLS gets no respect. ESPN and SI.com lump it in with their general soccer coverage. Yahoo! Sports has them listed just below the WNBA. They might not party like their Euro counterparts, but LAist.com is willing to give Chivas USA top billing tonight. So here it goes ... after a scoreless first half, winless D.C. United found the net twice (the second on a penalty kick) and......

Even though Los Angeles doesn't have an NFL team, that doesn't mean this weekend's draft was irrelevant. Unless, of course, you're Mr. Irrelevant, but we'll get to that in a moment. Unlike most major cities in this country, LA is the only one that suffers a net loss of talent whenever the draft happens. The closest team is the San Diego Chargers, who didn't exactly have exciting picks. Choosing LSU wideout Craig Davis over USC's......

LAist would have more draft coverage, but all it does is take good players away from LA. After three Trojans went in the second round (two are still on the board) and no Bruins got picked in the first three, we wondered what they're doing in Troy to get that edge. Looks like a little coaching from Will Ferrell Chuck Berry is Ryan Kalil's secret weapon. And we thought Ferrell's previous videos with Carroll......

Paolo Davanzo is an enthusiastic, avuncular man whose passion for filmmaking and education has resonated for half a decade from a brick building on the corner of Sunset and Alvarado. He’s like an Eastside Willy Wonka minus the creepiness. Lakers 111, Hornets 105 - Kobe continued to flaunt has superiority in the face of March Madness, talking before the game about how honored he was to be discussed in the same "bracket" as Wilt Chamberlain, Michael Jordan, and Elgin Baylor. After the game, he moved from the final four to the championship. While Michael and Elgin scored 50+ points in three straight games, Kobe has now done it in four (65, 50, 60, 50).......

Reggie Bush was the most exciting athlete LA has ever seen. In the end, he was also a fair amount of trouble for USC and some have questioned if he's a "class act." Enter OJ Mayo. Many consider this kid the brightest star in high school basketball. He's flashy and exciting, but he's been getting in a lot of trouble. This is a video from his final high school game -- a blowout victory......

Lakers 116, Blazers 111, OT - Maybe he's got a chip on his shoulder because he never played college ball and everybody's talking about March Madness. Maybe he's angry about all those NBA suspensions and the so-called witch hunt. Either way, Kobe was on fire with 65 points in the Laker's OT victory over Portland. Oregon 81, USC 57 - LAist predicted that USC and UCLA would play for the Pac 10 title. When the top seeded Bruins were knocked off by #8 Cal, it was up to the Trojans to represent LA. They couldn't. The 24 point margin doesn't begin to explain the Duck's domination. After beating Washington State in the semifinals on Friday night, USC left Staples Center in the wee hours of the morning on Saturday. They......

Lakers 118, Wizards 102 - Some say the Gilbert Arenas - Kobe Bryant rivalry has sprouted, and LAist is pretty sure it's budding. Both players have denied any personal friction despite mild trash talking in the media. Their exciting play against each other in Washington demonstrated talent and mutual admiration. Kobe had 39 points and Arenas had 37, several of which came on spectacular plays against one another.     Kings 7, Panthers 0 - It wasn't the Miracle On Ice, but it......

Gambling is illegal in Los Angeles and it should be. For if it were legal, LAist would bet the damn farm on the Clippers beating the crap out of the Golden State Warriors tonight at Staples. Why? Numbers. The Warriors just pulled the trigger on an eight-player trade that leaves the visitors with just six healthy players on their squad. NBA rules say you must dress eight or forfeit. The AP is speculating that......

Trojans 32, Wolverines 18 - After losing two games in the Rose Bowl in 2006 (one against Texas in the national championship, the other against UCLA to keep them out of another national championship), USC had a lot of doubters.
