Fallen Tree Knocks Out Power to Thousands in Laurel Canyon

A fallen eucalyptus tree was responsible for cutting off power overnight in the area atop Laurel Canyon near Lookout Mountain Avenue, according to KTLA. In response to the multiple calls regarding power outages firefighters expected to find a car crash on the scene, but when they arrived saw "a sizable tree" blocking the whole street, which had "broke[n] two wooden utility poles and knocked out a transformer when it fell." About 2,000 DWP customers were affected, but as crews worked to restore power, as of now only about 700 people remain without electricity, according to the LADWP. At about 7 last night a tree fell onto the Pilgrim Community Church in South Los Angeles and as a result the "building has been red-tagged," reports abc7, noting that a tree fell onto a parked car at Burbank Boulevard and Topanga Canyon as well, and another in Long Beach. "In Pacoima, a camper broke the fall of a tree, and a Jack in the Box sign flew off at Sherman Way and Coldwater Canyon in North Hollywood."

Yesterday evening at sunset, the Los Angeles Fire Department arrived to Ocean Front Walk at Venice Blvd. on a bird rescuing mission. A caller from her fourth story patio saw a seagull (gannet? heron?) dangling in a palm tree across the walk and called Animal Services, who in turn called for the help of a fire truck ladder.
