Tracy Morgan Heads Back To Nashville, Apology In Tow For Homophobic Rant

Tracy Morgan Heads Back To Nashville, Apology In Tow For Homophobic Rant

Hollywood oddball Tracy Morgan offended many, many people when he went on a homophobic rant during a show in Nashville earlier this month that included the suggestion that he would stab his own son if his son was gay. The rant was originally documented by Kevin Rogers, a photographer and owner of the soon-to-be-published FUZZ Magazine, on his Facebook page, and spread quickly from there. more ›

DVD Tuesday: It's Date Night!

Date Night wasn't a hilarious movie by any stretch (both The Office and 30 Rock are funnier), but it's the sort of mainstream comedy that the whole family can watch. While it was groundbreaking in the 80s, Max Headroom definitely shows some seams on the edges. Still, it's worth a look for curiosity's sake alone. There was no reason to re-make Death at a Funeral, and it rightly failed. Let's not bail out the producers and buy or rent the DVD of this needless film. Once upon a time the National Lampoon brand was worth something. Vacation hearkens back to a more prosperous and funnier time. Shame that it's gone. Who exactly is buying Graphic Sexual Horror and are tabs being kept on them? more ›

DVD Tuesday: Runaway?

I enjoyed but hardly loved The Runaways. Dakota Fanning continues to be badly mis-cast (mostly because she's no longer nearly so compelling an actor) and Kristen Stewart hasn't grown much as a performer since In the Land of Women. Still, Michael Shannon was his usual electrifying self and the story of The Runaways is a great one (though I would have loved to have seen more of Lita Ford!). The Losers surely suffered from the perception of being an A-Team-lite. Let's see if The Expendables suffers a similar fate in a few weeks. Cop Out was plain awful. If only Kevin Smith could be satisfied with the prospect of being nothing more than a brilliant public speaker (as opposed to a mediocre filmmaker). more ›

Seven Questions: Bobb'e J. Thompson

Seven Questions: Bobb'e J. Thompson

Bobb'e J. has shared both the small and big screen with some of the biggest stars in town, has hosted his own TV show and was nominated for an MTV Movie Award all before he was old enough to have a driver's license. Thompson, who still isn't old enough to drive, broke through with his scene stealing performance in the hit comedy, Role Models. The actor/rapper's career, which began at age five, includes roles in "The Tracy Morgan Show," "Human Giant," Idlewild, Fred Claus and Land of the Lost. The 14 year-old who lives outside of Los Angeles has teamed up with a group of teen filmmakers for the Reese's Puffs Extraordinary Cinema program more ›

Box Office Review: Ass-Kicked!

The smart money had the fantastic Kick-Ass winning the weekend box-office race after a month of promotion and hot buzz. Good thing people can't bet on movie futures yet, because How to Train Your Dragon experienced a strong surge in its third weekend to best all comers. Thanks to a huge amount of screens and the benefit of premium 3-D prices, the DreamWorks kid pic raked in $20M ($158.6M) to edge Matthew Vaughn's hard-R comic book treatment ($19.75M) (of course that could change when Monday actuals come in, but who pays attention to those?) Date Night enjoyed a strong second weekend ($17.3M | $49.2M) to top the disappointing Death at a Funeral ($17M). Clash of the Titans rounded out the top 5 ($15.7M | $132.9M). more ›

Weekend Movie Guide: Kick-Ass!

             + 1 more

The months-long wait to see Kick-Ass is almost over! Can't wait! May see it twice this weekend. Sure it may be nihilistic and inappropriate (e.g. the obvious sexualization of a pre-teen Chloe Moretz), but God damn if it doesn't feel full of energy and evil wit. Plus, it features good Nic Cage (as opposed to bad Nic Cage). What I won't see is the astonishingly unnecessary re-make of Death at a Funeral. It begs the question: can Chris Rock translate his unique comic persona into anything other than dull, generic films? Our mess of an educational system is put under the microscope by a privateer in The Cartel. Bring your conservative friends! more ›

Box Office Review: More Duly-Appointed Federal Marshals!

Showing unexpected strength, Shutter Island held off all comers to claim its second straight weekend at the top of the box office heap ($22.2M | $75M). Yay Marty! Newcomers Cop Out ($18.5M) and The Crazies ($16.5M) placed second and third while Avatar just keeps fucking hanging around ($14M | $706.9M). Percy Jackson & The Olympians: Unusually Long Title is showing good legs in its third week ($9.8M | $71.2M), unlike Valentine's Day which continues to crater ($9.5M | $100.3M). more ›

Weekend Movie Guide: Defendor! Prophet! Yay!

Some might say I am a Woody Harrelson apologist, but I think I'm just a really big fan. In any case, his latest film opens today and everyone should see it. Defendor is about a mentally unstable man who believes (and acts) as if he's a superhero (think Kick-Ass but more insane). Check out the trailer after the jump and try and tell him it doesn't look hilarious. A Prophet was one of the prestige films to emerge from this year's Cannes Film Festival. It concerns an illiterate man who goes to prison and emerges a criminal. Looks fantastic! It's a shame that so many Angelenos will be turned away by its (gasp!) subtitles. more ›

TV Junkie: 'Mad Money' Jim Cramer Goes Mano-a-Mano with Jon Stewart on 'The Daily Show' Tonight

CNBC's host of "Mad Money", Jim Cramer, will appear on "The Daily Show" tonight to finally have it out face-to-face with Jon Stewart, who castigated the network for a skewed perspective that was harsh on President Obama's stimulus plan but soft on CEOs. Stewart has also pointed out specific stock recommendations made by Cramer last year that were wildly misinformed at best, if not downright criminally negligent. more ›

LAist Interview: Artie Lange

LAist Interview: Artie Lange

Telling a story is not easy, especially when the stories are emotional, outrageous and true. Comedian, actor and member of the Howard Stern Show cast, Artie Lange, however, has made a living telling the stories of his life on the air and on stage. Finally, those stories that have made the Stern Nation laugh since joining the show in 2001, along with several other painfully true moments from Lange's life can be found in Too Fat to Fish. more ›
