New KCRW Web Feature Spotlights 5 Things to Check Out

It's a 140-character, bullet point list, soundbite world we live in, and while many of us turn to 89.9 KCRW for long sets of good music or informative programming, they're now offering up a way to get "a bite-sized glimpse into some of their favorite things." Personalities and behind-the-sceners at the Santa Monica College-based NPR station are sharing a list a week of 5 Things. Already in the archive are DJ Dan Wilcox's 5 Best Places to Expose Your Kids to Music, DJ Tom Schnabel's 5 Bands that Defined surf culture in LA, and DJ Jason Bentley's Top 5 Condiments (Sriracha, FTW!). And now that the station's Summer Pledge Drive is done, look for more forthcoming 5-ers from your favorites.

Tonight I will be at the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas attending Justin Timberlake’s FutureSex/LoveSounds show. I can’t even begin to tell you how much I love not only the newest album, but also JT’s general hotness. Above, I’ve included Mr. Timberlake’s video for his single “My Love”, to display how he can make me, and plenty of other women and gay men, melt into a puddle on the floor. Generally, listening to Justin...

There was some really good music released over the summer and it's always nice to return to school with some "indie cred" so here are the Top 5 Albums to bring back to school with you:

One word: UY!

The night before tens of thousands at Chavez Ravine celebrated the anniversary of Jackie Robinson breaking the color barrier, a few miles west, in Hollywood, an African-American star on one of the most popular tv shows in the nation was being denied entrance into a new club.

Straight from my iPod: 1. Justin Timberlake - SexyBack The pinnacle of guilty pleasure straight from MTV's Total Request Live fame. Still a great club banger. 2. The Fray - Look After You All of their songs sound the same but this one hasn't lost its replayability. 3. The Dixie Chicks - The Long Way Around There is nothing to feel guilty about listening to the Dixie Chicks. They kick ass. The only reason...

If anyone complains about new music today they're not buying the right cds. Arizona's The Format came out with one of the best new discs of any year and is in LAist's Top 5 of 2006, which is quite a feat since there were so many great ones that came out this year. Fun, happy, hopeful, easy to get into, "Dog Problems" was there for us as we fell asleep, there for us as...

Welcome to the new redesign! We went over to Dr. 90210 and lopped off that fugly right-hand column, which now allows us more room for giant photos.

Unfortunately tonight we're extremely biased. We know there's a lot of shows happening around town, but for us there's really only one, the Australian trio The Grates. Their debut album "Gravity Won't Get You High" will be in our Top 5 of Best CDs of 2006 list at the end of the year, we've raved over their shows, YouTubed a few songs from their last Spaceland show, and we've even interviewed them like fanboys....

Who would have thought back in 1985, when the Red Hot Chili Peppers were working with George Clinton, that 21 years later their brand of whiteboy funk would be some of the most reliably popular middle-of-the-road music for the masses? Not only do you hear "Californication" in the dentist's office, bank, and elevator, but it actually sounds good in those places.

LAist is giving away a pair of tickets to see the BellRays at Safari Sam's in Hollywood this Friday. It's a record release party-slash-tour kickoff and is liable to rock your socks off. Their new CD, Have a Little Faith, was one of our Top 5 new releases last week. Ladykillers, Spores and L7's Donita Sparks are also on the bill. To slake your Bellrays thirst before Friday, here's an MP3 of "Maniac Blues." Enter for tickets below.

The LA Weekly begins a series on water and LA's lust for H20 as the DWP contemplates a rate hike in July. And in fluffier news, for fashion week the paper's Steffie Nelson looks at age-appropriate fashion — including some very nice photos, thanks to the website's redesign — and concludes that even 40-year-olds can shop at Forever 21.

We were excited to hear that KCRW is taking its music shows online in a brand new 24-hour music website. How smart: KCRW isn't just a station, it's a brand. Take a formerly local radio broadcast and leverage it as a national online brand and soon they'll be raking in even more donations from all over the country, not just Santa Monica and Brentwood and Silverlake.

LAist is not only a daily weblog of all things Los Angeles, but also an avid friend to animals great and small. This, of course, includes our friend the dog. But here in a metropolitan monolith of steel and brick our furry friends don't have as many places to romp freely. There are dog parks, this is true — but which ones are worth visiting and which ones are, no pun intended, a bunch of crap?
