Tonight In Rock: Eagle Rock Music Festival, Ladyhawke, Elvis Perkins In Dearland, You Me & Iowa

Tonight New Zealand-bred electro pop singer-songwriter Ladyhawke is poised to grace the Avalon with Seattle's own electro pop sensation Natalie Portman's Shaved Head. NY/LA-based folk troubadours Elvis Perkins in Dearland (LAist Interview) are poised to headline the Troubadour with North Dakota-based singer-songwriter Tom Brosseau and Echo Park-bred folk pop act Correatown in tow. And, lastly, local indie rockers You Me & Iowa will be gracing Spaceland with Radars to the Sky. But we strongly suggest heading over to Eagle Rock to catch forty some-odd—including No Age (LAist Review, #2), The Happy Hollows, Peanut Butter Wolf, Nico Stai, The French Semester, Amateurs, Dusty Rhodes and the River Band, Blank Blue, Pocahaunted, Bobb Bruno, The Gaslamp Killer, Julia Holter, Jail Weddings, Free Moral Agents, Fol Chen (Canceled!) and Leslie and the Badgers, among many, many others. Head on over to the Verdugo Bar in neighboring Glassell Park for one of many promising after-parties!

Largo at the Coronet 'Duets' Benefit for St. Jude's to Feature Fiona Apple, Jon Brion, John C. Reilly and More

Largo at the Coronet has hosted many benefits over the years, and the one this Saturday will feature Largo's first-ever evening of duets, with the proceeds going to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. Largo owner Mark Flanagan told LAist that the evening will include a number of duets that Fiona Apple and Jon Brion have been working on, in addition to pairings featuring artists such as John C. Reilly, Tom Brosseau, Mike Viola and a surprise guest or two.

Tonight In Rock: 2 Live Crew, Pennywise, The Watkins Family Hour, Meiko

Tonight legendary Miami-based hip hop group 2 Live Crew will be performing at the Key Club in Hollywood. Hermosa Beach's own punk rockers Pennywise are poised to headline Club Nokia in Downtown with Kailua Kona-based rock-reggae act Pepper in tow. And, lastly, local singer-songwriter Meiko will be making a relatively last minute appearance at the Hotel Café alongside Butterfly Boucher and Carina Round. But we strongly suggest heading over to Largo at the Coronet for Watkins Family Hour (LAist Review). As mentioned previously, local Grammy-winning singer-songwriter Fiona Apple, Tom Brosseau and actor John C. Reilly, among a few other surprise guests, are slated to jam with former Nickel Creek fiddler Sara Watkins (LAist Interview) and her guitar-toting brother Sean (LAist Interview).

Fiona Apple to Make Surprise Appearance at Largo

As if Joe Cocker, Erykah Badu, Peaches and the Field weren't enough to make you salivate, LAist just got word that local Grammy-winning singer-songwriter Fiona Apple—everyone's favorite lil' brooding princess—will be making a surprise appearance this Wednesday at Largo at the Coronet for Watkins Family Hour (LAist Review). The fairly regular, familial occasion, which is hosted by former Nickel Creek fiddler Sara Watkins (LAist Interview) and her guitar-toting brother Sean (LAist Interview), will also feature prominent guest musicians like Tom Brosseau and actor John C. Reilly. To put it simply: You'll want to be there just for bragging rights, if not the music. This is not a night to be missed, so make sure you plan accordingly!

Tonight In Rock: Van Morrison, Tom Brosseau, Her Space Holiday, The Silent Years

Tonight legendary Belfast-bred singer-songwriter Van Morrison will be kicking off a three-night stint at the Orpheum Theatre in Downtown. Beach Boys front man Brian Wilson will be performing at the Peterson Automotive Museum for its annual charity gala. San Mateo-based electronic musician Marc Bianchi, otherwise known as Her Space Holiday, is poised to headline the Echo. And, lastly, Detroit's own indie rock buzz band the Silent Years will be gracing Spaceland. But we strongly suggest heading over to Largo at the Coronet to catch North Dakota-based singer-songwriter Tom Brosseau, who will be ringing in his first new album of studio material in two years. German pianist/composer Hauschka is slated to kick things off.

December is list-making season. And for us music journalists, it is a time to look back on scores of albums, reflect upon the music and recapitulate our favorites. But this year, just like the last, we took this opportunity to flip that tradition upside down, asking the artists that influenced us what influenced them. The prompt was not limited to albums that came out in 2008.
