LA has a diverse cast of characters. Whether it's the characters with stirring stories or interesting occupations or the people who are just simply characters, this town has them all. In an effort to get to know some of those characters a little better, we've created "Seven Questions with..." If you have a suggestion for a future Seven Questions subject send us an email.

Maybe all headline-making R&B star Chris Brown needed was some face time with girlfriend Rihanna under her beach "Umbrella." It seems the pair are back together now, three weeks after their Grammy no-show, Brown's arrest, and Rihanna's battered mug made news and drove the young lovers apart, according to People magazine. The rag mag relies on unnamed sources to spill the dirt on the duo, who were expected to next meet in court here in LA, and not "at one of Sean 'Diddy' Combs's homes, on Miami Beach's Star Island," where they are reported to be right now. Says the anon source: "While Chris is reflective and saddened about what happened, he is really happy to be with the woman he loves." Many had hoped this horrible incident would lead to Rihanna speaking up for herself and on behalf of abused women everywhere, perhaps bringing to light--as Tina Turner did more than a generation ago--that physical abuse in a romantic pairing still happens in the spotlight. It seems this latest chapter only teaches us that love hurts. Ouch.
Tonight the one and only, eight time Grammy Award-winning singer Tina Turner will stop by the Staples Center. It will be your last opportunity to catch the "Queen of Rock & Roll" before she heads off to peruse the rest of the world. Canadian singer-songwriters and identical twins Tegan and Sara will be kicking off a four-night sold-out stint at the Henry Fonda Music Box. And in what appears to be the umpteenth appearance this year, Austin's own electro-pop stars Ghostland Observatory will be playing at the Mayan. We doubt they've got anything new up their sleeves since the last time we saw them. And, lastly, Birmingham-based alternative rock band Wild Sweet Orange are slated to perform at the Hotel Café, along with Oakland-based Audrye Sessions. But we recommend paying Spaceland a visit to catch Toronto's own Born Ruffians. The jittery indie rockers will be testing out new songs from their latest endeavor, 2008's Red Yellow Blue.
It's Monday and that means the lion's share of shows are free residencies. Fresno-based Rademacher will continue to rock over at the Echo. And LA-based new wave outfit Manhattan Murder Mystery will continue to croon at Mr T's Bowl. But we wholeheartedly suggest checking out Kenan Bell's Monday Night Residency at Spaceland. Our favorite two-man instrumental band El Ten Eleven, who are best known for the seldom-used guitar/bass doubleneck, will be opening up the show with wailing notes and disco beats.
The WGA Board voted unanimously last night to not picket the 50th Grammy Awards, February 10th at Staples Center.
Ike Turner, ex-hubby to Tina Turner and a "rock and roll pioneer", died this morning in his northern San Diego county home. The cause of death is not immediately known.
The last three contestants on American Idol fought for a place in the finale last night. Jordin Sparks, Blake Lewis and Melinda Doolittle sang three songs each: one picked by a judge, one picked by the producers and one of their own choosing. Of course, to fill the hour, the show followed the contestants back to their respective hometowns. Uber-perky-to-the-point-of-annoying Jordin traveled back to Glendale, Ariz., where her local mall was mobbed by fans....

Still wondering what to give your sweet transgressive for Valentine's Day? Filthy, lovable, mustachioed filmmaker John Waters is releasing A Date With John Waters, a stirring yet suitably bizarre compilation album of his favorite love songs. To celebrate the album's release Waters will be at Amoeba Records in Hollywood tomorrow, February 6 at 6 PM, signing CDs and posing with fans in a Valentines setting.
The album spans oddities such as the first record Waters ever owned, "Tonight You Belong to Me" by Patience and Prudence, to the "first trisexual song ever recorded," "Ain't Got No Home" by Clarence "Frogman" Henry, to the wailing blues of Ike & Tina Turner's "All I Can Do Is Cry" to the "perfect song for an awkward moment," "Sometimes I Wish I Had A Gun" by Mink Stole.

There are a lot of great musical choices today -- from George Benson and his buddy Al Jarreau at the Bowl, to the Foo Fighters with Frank Black at the Pantages, or the unforgetable Sally Kellerman at Genghis Cohen; but this Spring there was even more competition for your rocknroll attention and the mighthy and powerful Bellrays came out on top. 1,200 bands were in Austin and tonight's middle band at the Wiltern rocked...
When we heard that Jennifer Aniston was turning to Buddhism to deal with her divorce from Brad Pitt, we couldn't help but think of the Tina Turner Bio Pic featuring Buddha as the driving force in her resolve to get beyond Ike. The situations are completely different but we make no claims at knowing why our brain associates like it does.
