On this Friday night, we were treated to two pitching duels with both the Angels and the Dodgers defeat the Yankees and Giants respectively 2-1. It seemed like a karmic gift for suffering through this little heat wave in Southern California this week.
LAst Night's Action: Dodgers and Angels Duel Away for Wins
LAst Night's Action: Blake Griffin Electrifies in Clippers' Loss
Portland Trail Blazers defeat LA Clippers 98-88. The Clippers have been waiting for the debut of Blake Griffin for more than a year, and in the opening seconds of their game no. 1 he provided these two gems for his first two buckets of his young career:
LAst Night's Action: USC Dominates Cal
USC Trojans defeat California Golden Bears 48-14. After consecutive conference losses against Washington and Stanford, the Trojans decided to take their frustrations out on the Bears. The first half belonged to the Trojans as they racked up 42 points and 372 of their total 589 yards while shutting down Cal in every phase of the game.
LAst Night's Action: Galaxy Continue To Roll
LA Galaxy defeat Philadelphia Union 1-0. A corner kick by David Beckham in the 27th minute connected with Edson Buddle who headed the ball into the net for his 16th goal of the season. The win gives the Galaxy 56 points and clearly in the driver’s seat for the club’s third Supporters’ Shield - the league’s best regular season record.
A Chunk of Joe Torre's Baseball Brain
Los Angeles Dodgers Manager Joe Torre is one of Major League Baseball's deep wells of wisdom.
The 69 year-old was a career .297 hitter through a playing career that spanned the majority of the ‘60’s and ‘70’s. While having won numerous championships as a Manager, Torre isn’t just some old guy that calls the shots.
Earlier this afternoon, during his usual pre-game dugout chat with the media, Torre shared a chunk of knowledge on winning.
Giants, Lincecum Bleed Out Dodgers 9 - 0
This afternoon at Dodger Stadium, the Los Angeles Dodgers (5-6) achieved the second half of that old ballpark saying: “you win some, you lose some.”
Two-time Cy Young winner/Longhair, San Franco Giant Tim Lincecum did what he usually does, and gutted the Dodgers bats in front of 44,734. In six scoreless innings Lincecum (3-0) allowed just four hits and seven strikeouts.
LAst Night's Action: Lakers Fight for a Victory
LA Lakers defeat Dallas Mavericks 106-99. The Lakers should have lost this game. They were outrebounded 58-48 by the Mavericks and lost the three-point shooting battle going 15.4% compared to the Mavericks 27.3%. But the Lakers defense came alive in the second half outscoring the Mavs 52-39. The second team anchored by Trevor Ariza on defense and a +/- differential of +16 (the Lakers scored 16 more points than the Mavs when Ariza was on the floor). Last season the Lakers would have lost this game. But this season, well you know. The Lakers are now 6-0 along with the surprising Atlanta Hawks and will play the second game of the back-to-back at New Orleans Hornets tonight.
