LAst Night's Action: Lakers Dominate Suns in Pacific Division Clash

LA Lakers defeat Phoenix Suns 121-102. With both teams having only one loss in the Western Conference, this was supposed to be a very good game, but the Lakers decided to make it a laugher. With the Lakers leading 65-55 in the third quarter, they went on a 15-0 run to quash any hope for the Suns in making this a close game. Andrew Bynum in his first game back from sitting two games out with a bad elbow scored 26 points and grabbed 15 rebounds. Kobe Bryant added 29 points. Josh Powell and Shannon Brown came off the bench impressively with Powell scoring 14 points in 19 minutes and Brown scoring 10 points in 15 minutes. Also their 78 points in the paint is the most since March 2000.However the Lakers 38.9% free throw shooting and 15 turnovers are causes for concern. With this victory head coach Phil Jackson is now 1,048-436 tying Larry Brown for fifth in NBA victories.

As of 1 pm this afternoon, Tim Floyd resigned as USC men's basketball coach according to Floyd's home state's Clarion Ledger. In his one-paragraph resignation later to USC athletic director Mike Garrett he writes, "Unfortunately, I no longer feel I can offer the level of enthusiasm to my duties that is deserved by the university, my coaching staff, my players, their families, and the supporters of Southern Cal." Perhaps this wane in enthusiasm stems from him allegedly giving $1,000 to a person close to OJ Mayo during Mayo's recruiting process? More on this later.

Contrary to rumors last night, Tim Floyd will stay on as head coach of the USC Trojans basketball team. Last night word was leaked that Floyd might be headed to the University of Arizona. With an 85-50 record over four seasons, Floyd led the Trojans to three consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances making it to the Sweet Sixteen in 2007. AP Photo/Jeff Lewis

LA Lakers defeat Milwaukee Bucks 104-98. The Lakers played another awful half of basketball but came back with effort in the second half to close out their seven game road trip with a win. They got stops on defense in the fourth quarter, but the Bucks made a late burst to come within three points with less than a minute remaining. Kobe Bryant scored 30 points while Pau Gasol had 15 points and Lamar Odom had a double-double with 20 points and 10 rebounds. The Lakers have seven games remaining with road games at Sacramento and Portland - both teams they have troubles with on the road.

We are counting down to the madness. One of the most exciting days in sports and the least productive work days on the calendar, the opening round of the NCAA Men's Basketball Championships, is less than 24 hours away.

Heated High School Hoops Rivalry Packs the House

USC and UCLA, Lakers and Clippers, Angelina and Jennifer, Pink's and Carney's. Rivalries are as much a part of LA as the smog filled air we breathe.

OK, USC didn't actually sign the kid who doesn't even know what high school he's going to go to yet, but they did accept his oral commitment to come to the university once he is eligible.

Tobacco Road, watch your back. Gainesville, better enjoy that trophy while you’ve got it. LA is back with a vengeance and is ready to reclaim its place atop the college basketball kingdom. With UCLA and USC both advancing to the Sweet 16 for only the second time ever, the local buzz hasn’t been this great in decades. The Bruins have been a consistently good program since the departure of John Wooden from the sidelines...

Tonight at Pauley Pavillion the UCLA Bruins and USC Trojans will take their rivalry from the gridiron to the hardwood. While some may say this version doesn't have the same intensity as in years past or that of the football game, it is a game that is of huge importance to both teams. No. 18 UCLA (14-3; 4-2), despite injury issues, is off to its best start in head coach Ben Howland's three years. The Trojans (12-5; 3-3) under first year head coach Tim Floyd, have already matched the number of victories from last season and earlier matched their record for consecutive wins with nine.

The UCLA Men’s basketball team dropped a tough game to the visiting Washington Huskies, 69-65, giving the Huskies their first win at Pauley Pavilion since 1987. The Bruins, who led by as many as 15 points, found themselves trailing 64-60 when Ryan Appleby hit a three-pointer with less than 3 minutes to go. After some scrambling and a key three pointer by Arron Afflalo, the Bruins pulled to within one. But Husky forward Bobby Jones made one of two free throws to put Washington up 67-65 with 11 seconds left to play. UCLA had one last chance to tie but saw it disappear with a turnover by Luc Richard Mbah a Moute.

The LA Daily News is reporting that Tim Floyd has agreed to become the next Head Coach of USC basketball. Provided USC and the New Orleans Hornets can agree on a financial settlement, Floyd will be introduced next week.
