Tonight Texas-bred American Academy Award-winning singer/songwriter Ryan Bingham & the Dead Horses will be headlining the El Rey Theatre in support of his third studio-album—2010's T Bone Burnett-produced Junky Star. Chicago-based multi-instrumentalist folk rockers the Autumn Defense are poised to take on the Troubadour.
And, lastly, local psych-tinged indie rockers Nightfur will be gracing the hole-and-corner Pehrspace. But we strongly suggest heading over to Origami Vinyl to catch Long Beach's own surf punk trio Tijuana Panthers. LAist favorites, LA-by-way-of-Glasgow retro 50s/60s pop outfit Neverever are slated to kick things off.

Tonight In Rock: Social Distortion, The Get Up Kids, Monotonix, The Blow
Tonight Fullerton-based punk rock outfit Social Distortion (LAist Review) will be performing to a sold-out crowd at the Hollywood Palladium. Legendary Kansas City-bred indie rock maestros the Get Up Kids are poised to take on the Troubadour with New Jersey's own indie rock quintet Steel Train some seven years after the release of their debut album, in anticipation of their fifth studio full-length—2011's There Are Rules. But we strongly suggest heading over to the Satellite to catch Brooklyn-based electro pop act the Blow.
Tonight In Rock: Guster, Kimya Dawson, Ty Segall, The Quarter After
We strongly suggest heading over to Alex's Bar in Long Beach to catch San Franciscan psych-infused garage rocker Ty Segall. LAist favorites, Long Beach's own surf punk trio Tijuana Panthers, who recently released their thirteen-song endeavor entitled Max Baker in August of 2010, are slated to kick things off.
The Port of Los Angeles Lobster Festival w/ Devon Eisenbarger, Tijuana Panthers, Walking Sleep, Miss Derringer, The Section Quartet, and John Doe & Exene Cervenka of X, 9/19/10
As mentioned previously, the 12th Annual Port of Los Angeles Lobster Festival (aka "LobsterFest") was held last weekend at the Ports O'Call Village in San Pedro. For Kevin Bronson from Buzz Bands, the highlight of Sunday's musical lineup -- consisting of Devon Eisenbarger, Tijuana Panthers, Walking Sleep, Miss Derringer, The Section Quartet, and John Doe and Exene Cervenka of X -- was "...when [the headliners] -- in the middle of 'Give Me Flowers While I'm Living' -- were interrupted by the horn of a departing cruise ship. See what happens 1:04 into the song."
25 Reasons Why Silver Lake Jubilee Is Going to ROCK
Like a pre-teen who just got a hold of his first Playboy, looking at the list of bands playing the Silver Lake Jubilee makes us hyperventilate. The question is of course, what should you see? With such a plethora of names and genres, how do you know where to go? Fear not! We have put together a list of a dozen bands per day that you simply must see. As usual we've included a list of tunes so you can judge for yourself and more importantly set times of when they go on!
Tonight In Rock: Death Cab For Cutie, Émilie Simon, Avi Buffalo, Tijuana Panthers
Tonight Bellingham-based indie rock outfit Death Cab For Cutie will be performing at the Hollywood Bowl with the Los Angeles Philharmonic bolstering their sound. Local indie rockers Avi Buffalo (LAist Interview, Review) are headlining Silver Factory Studios. And, lastly, Long Beach's own surf punk trio Tijuana Panthers will be performing at the Echo for this week's edition of Part Time Punks. But we strongly suggest heading over to the Bootleg Theatre to catch legendary experimental French pop chanteuse Émilie Simon.
Surf's Up! Meet Phil Shaheen: Drummer for The Tijuana Panthers
"Our music isn't that serious," Phil Shaheen admitted. "All of the bands I looked up to growing up weren't serious, either. They would have serious lyrics and silly music or serious music and silly lyrics. Music should be about having a good time." As the drummer of the Tijuana Panthers, one of SoCal's best surf rock groups, he knows all about that. Heavily influenced by classic 1960s surf rock fused with punk, the Panthers will make you want to put on your wet suit, grab your board, and make a beeline for the beach. Office meetings, florescent lighting, and paperwork be damned! It's a beautiful day outside, let's call in sick and hit the beach. (I wouldn't be surprised that after perusing this article if half of you got up right now and did just that.) Phil was kind enough about his band's new EP and their upcoming show at Spaceland. Here is some of what was said.

The Muslims' Top Ten of 2008
December is list-making season. And for us music journalists, it is a time to look back on scores of albums, reflect upon the music and recapitulate our favorites. But this year, just like the last, we took this opportunity to flip that tradition upside down, asking the artists that influenced us what influenced them. The prompt was not limited to albums that came out in 2008.
