In Betty White We Trust

Got a product that needs hawking? A recent poll suggests that Betty White is your Golden Girl. Reuters/Ipsos asked Americans the dubious question of which celebrity they most trust. White, continuing to ride a crest of late-career popularity, came out just ahead of Denzel Washington and Sandra Bullock. Clint Eastwood, Tom Hanks, Harrison Ford, Kate Middleton and Morgan Freeman also made the top 10. more ›

The Business Of Doing The Business: Sex Addiction Rehab On The, Ahem, Rise

The Business Of Doing The Business: Sex Addiction Rehab On The, Ahem, Rise

Like firing sewage into the ocean, high-profile celebrity hedonists have ejaculated a plague of pathological narcissism into mainstream currents, normalizing the once fringe concept of sexual addiction. Alexandra Katehakis, an unlicensed sex addiction therapist -- because no is license available, because it's not acknowledged as an official disorder, because it's not governed by any regulation -- runs the Los Angeles based Center for Healthy Sex, a practice she calls, "a full-blown organization" (oh no she didn't) that includes a team of counselors, a range of group therapies, and training programs for would-be sex docs, reports the LA Times. more ›

Tiger Woods: A What If?

Tiger Woods: A What If?

What if it wasn’t supposed to happen like this? It’s no secret that professional athletes have historically more marital arrangements than Joe The Monogamous Plumber. They often involve multiple partners. But when is it cheating? What if that which a spectator deems cheating isn’t what the relationship’s participants declare to be infidelity? more ›

LAst Night's Action: Celtics Edge Lakers

LAst Night's Action: Celtics Edge Lakers

Boston Celtics defeat LA Lakers 87-86. Without Kobe Bryant the Lakers lost a close one at the buzzer to the Celtics at home. The fourth quarter was all about defense with the Lakers outscoring the Celtics 17-11. Rougher than most Pac-10 football games, neither team would cede any ground to the other. But with two seconds left in the game and Kobe on the bench it was up to Derek Fisher to create his own shot for the win. While everyone stops dying of laughter, Pau Gasol led the Lakers with 22 points while Lamar Odom got a double-double with 13 points and 14 boards. All five Celtics starters scored in double digits. more ›

Random Thoughts on Exciting Changes To The Social Contract!

Random Thoughts on Exciting Changes To The Social Contract!

A close friend and I have an ongoing game we call "I can't believe it's not a parody". The objective is to find songs that are 100% serious and have not been created by a comedian, and yet are impossible to believe to not be kidding. Once upon a time this was quite the difficult game, but in recent years, it has become so easy that it's almost beginning to feel like time to changes the objective to finding songs that do not sound like jokes. more ›

Midnight Movie: Tiger Woods, Quiet Stormed

This song has been stuck in my head for the past 34 hours. Perhaps your head will be slow-jamming, like mine, with Tiger's take your name off your phone request. And, nope, he won't be found at his own SoCal golf tourney this weekend. more ›

LAst Night's Action: Kings Hold On to Beat Sens

LAst Night's Action: Kings Hold On to Beat Sens

LA Kings defeat Ottawa Senators 6-3. It wasn’t a pretty game, but the Kings persevered to beat the Sens. Randy Jones scored the opening goal for the Kings 42 seconds into the game, but the Sens would control most of the game in the first period. But at the end of the period, Wayne Simmonds was tripped on the way to the goal which gave him a penalty shot which he converted for the 2-1 lead. The Kings would go on to take a 3-1 lead early in the second period, but the Senators rallied back to tie the game at 3-3. Scoring chances at the end of the game inflated the score for the Kings, but a win is a win especially when you’re not playing your best. more ›

The World Looking to L.A. Waitress in Tiger Wood Scandal

The World Looking to L.A. Waitress in Tiger Wood Scandal

Tiger Woods avoided a golf tournament in Thousand Oaks this week, even though it was raising money for his very own Tiger Woods Foundation. After last week's solo car crash that raised questions and ultimately led to the unveiling of his alleged Los Angeles mistress of 31 months, cocktail waitress and reality TV contestant Jaimee Grubbs, the "media circus"--as the LA Times puts it--has come to Los Angeles. A voicemail allegedly left by Woods on Grubbs' phone has been spreading like wildfire. more ›

Friday's incident was the lynchpin for a series of news about Woods' personal life, something he rather keep private. more ›

LAist Goes Golfing on the Cheap

After a few months of hibernating, the golf clubs in this my closet begged to be taken out for a little fresh air. So spurred on by Tiger Woods’ return to the fairways, and even more so by the pleading, golf-addicted husband, I dusted off the clubs and found the Footjoys. It was time to play. more ›

Talking with PGA TOUR Players, 'Tour' Being the Key Word, at The Northern Trust Open

This past weekend, the gorgeous grounds of the Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades played host to THE PGA TOUR with the Northern Trust Open. While on paper, it may seem like the Northern Trust is just one of 48 stops along the 45 week schedule that is the PGA tour, but this weekend's event was actually quite significant. more ›

LAst Night's Action: Dodgers Win Two in a Row!

LAst Night's Action: Dodgers Win Two in a Row!

LA Dodgers defeat Cincinnati Reds 6-1. Can the Dodgers play the Reds everyday? Seriously. Not only do the Dodgers score more than one run, they give beleaguered starter Derek Lowe run support. Pitching on a strict count, Lowe pitched only 5 1/3 innings making 85 pitches giving up only one run on three hits with six strikeouts. James Loney helped the cause hitting a solo homer and an RBI double. Dare we wish for three straight wins? more ›

LAst Night's Action: Tiger Rocks Rocco

LAst Night's Action: Tiger Rocks Rocco

Tiger Woods wins US Open. I hate watching golf, but Monday's playoff round in Torrey Pines was the most compelling golf since Adam Sandler tackled Bob Barker. So the 72 holes over the weekend wasn't enough to settle things between Tiger Woods and Rocco Mediate. Even the 18 playoff holes weren't enough. No, they played a sudden death hole where Mediate finally caved in hitting a bunker shot into the grandstand. All in all this was the best US Open in forever. more ›

LAst Night's Action: Few Bright Spots

LAst Night's Action: Few Bright Spots

Cubs 8, Dodgers 2 - There goes that winning streak. The Blew Crew committed three errors, but only allowed one unearned run. That left an average of one earned for each of the seven pitchers used by Los Angeles. Juan Pierre was responsible for one of the errors, but also picked up his 55th stolen base of the year. A's 6, Angels 2 - Garret Anderson has been en fuego. He extended his RBI streak... more ›

Wayne Rooney ... Tiger or Ronaldinho?

Nike has put together some pretty cool commercials, but this one makes us wonder. Is it real, like the Tiger Woods one, or fake, like the Ronaldinho one? If it's real, did they super-impose the swoosh on the ball in post-production so it would show up in the ad? more ›

Black History Month Pop Quiz: How Many Black Videogame Heroes Can You Name?

LAist loves video games. Loves them. And we love Black folk. Half of LAist's Editors over the years have been African-American. Last week the blog microscopiq wrote a wonderful post called "The First 11 Black Videogame Stars" where they listed and summarized 11 video game main characters that you *had*... more ›

Mike Douglas (1925-2006)

Larry King in remembering Mike Douglas said that he thinks "nice guy" when he remembers the former talk show host. LAist remembers someone who loved stars so much that he let them be themselves. He let John and Yoko take over his show for a week, he let Sly Stone be Sly Stone, he even let Tiger Woods (as a child) demonstrate his putting skills. But you tell us, who was featuring Tom Waits... more ›
