To put this in perspective, the San Fernando Valley's elevation varies between about 250 and 1200 ft, so says Wikipedia. Between 3 a.m. and 9 a.m., tomorrow, a frost advisory--meaning at least two hours of subfreezing temperatures--has been issued for the San Fernando Valley and other areas in the region, according to the National Weather Service who says there "is the potential for increasing rainfall intensities and even a slight chance of thunderstorms. Some of these showers could produce bursts of heavy rainfall." For recent burn areas below the snow level, the flash flood watch remains until at least 8 p.m. tonight.

Although temperatures are expected to be in the 80s and 90s today, the lighting, thunder and rain that traveled through San Diego and Orange County could break the heat for a short period of time today.

The National Weather Service has issued a flash flood watch for the Antelope Valley and other mountain areas of LA County except for the Santa Monica Mountains. They predict some slow moving showers and thunderstorms "capable of producing very heavy rainfall." Most of the activity is expected in the mountains and northern foothills of the San Gabriel range.

Yesterday was one of those great Los Angeles weather days. That is, when 5 miles makes the difference between a downpour and clear sunny skies. The Northwest Valley had some nice cloud cover and the Southeast Valley was perfect all day. It poured randomly in Santa Monica, but Beverly Hills was perfect. Brief spouts of rainfall were also reported in Ventura and Santa Barbara Counties. Then early this morning, lightning struck. 445 times to be exact, according to National Weather Service sensors, says the Associated Press. The lucky folks who got a little thunder and lightning action lived around Catalina Island and Palos Verdes where three thunderstorms were reported moving along the coast.

As weather in Los Angeles is still normal, Central and Northern California could be in for another round of dry lightning storms. There are two areas of thunderstorms across the West over the next day or two that have potential to create new wildfires over California.

Having never seen the stage version of , I can't speak to the fidelity the film shares with the play. That said, let there be no doubt that Tim Burton has crafted a true piece of musical cinema from Stephen Sondheim's bloody masterpiece. To their discredit, early previews have hedged a bit regarding the singing in the film. In them we only see Johnny Depp canting some recitative as he prowls the streets of London. While this scene is certainly in the movie, it's barely representative of the actual film which contains at least a dozen fully-staged numbers and only intermittent dialogue.

Whether you think he's a bumbling hippy, who let his own freak folk gimmick get to his head, or a distinctive innovator devising masterful records, one thing is certain: Devendra Banhart, who plays at the Orpheum on 10/13, is deliberately trying to make his obscure music more accessible to the masses. He's done so on his latest XL released effort by simply making his vocals and his overall tone more digestible. Smokey Rolls Down Thunder Canyon is a mesmerizing collision of free jazz, 70's rock and roll, Brazilian folk, sock hop, and even motown elements. Banhart's prior efforts comprised a tremendously divisive style of singing yet in certain fringe communities he has been regarded as the herald of the freak folk (or to be politically correct Naturalismo) movement.

After their bid at history fell short against the Longhorns of Texas, life at USC has moved on. Part of that process would inevitably involve change of players. Although the loss to graduation of key seniors Matt Leinart, Taitusi "Deuce" Lutui, and Tom Malone were unavoidable, as was the loss of Heisman Trophy winner Reggie Bush to the NFL inevitable. The loss of other key juniors puts the Trojan squad in a new situation.
