And who said culture doesn’t exist in Los Angeles? Check out these events for a little learning, a little entertainment – or both.

Frank Gehry has been given the opportunity to intensify his (sort of) Hometown Hero status in Downtown Los Angeles instead of recent Pritzker Prize-winner Thom Mayne of Morphosis.

Today is a proud day for the local architecture community, as well as for certain restaurateurs whose pioneering aesthetic sensibilities have been rewarded in unforeseen ways. Following this morning's announcement, having a meal at Kate Mantilini or Angeli means dining in Pritzker Prize-winning splendor. (Though of a more institutional nature, other LA locations where this unique distinction applies include the eating options at the Getty and Cathedral downtown.)

Is it a coincidence that Hawthorne's recent piece in Slate focuses on new architecture in Los Angeles?...Hmmm, we smell a tryout.

The Committee chose New York-based Related Cos. to develop the four parcels, for which design proposals are still pending. Local patron of the arts and real estate magnate Eli Broad and representatives from the City and County of Los Angeles are directing the effort. The parcels are owned by both public entities, and Los Angeles City Council and the County Board of Supervisors will have final project approval.
