TV Junkie: 'Hawaii Five-0' Blessed; Slow TV Week Ahead
Weekend Edition
We're heading into a sloooww TV weekend and an even slower TV week with no new premieres or finales. What the week will be building up to is the premiere of "Mad Men" on the night of July 25th - the hype has already started, it seems, with the "news" that Mrs. Draper, January Jones, is now an item with "Saturday Night Live" ombudsman Jason Sudeikis. Sudeikis is a very nice guy, so if it's true, more power to him, but this "reveal" seems a little too convenient.
TV Junkie: HBO Begins Ruling Sundays
Weekend Edition
Sure, this weekend is all about the World Cup (USA vs. Ghana tomorrow at 11am!) but Sunday is all about HBO. With its premieres of both "Hung" and "Entourage", HBO pretty much seals the deal as the Sunday night TV destination from now until the end of July when "Mad Men" premieres on AMC.
DVD Tuesday: London Calls Bruce!
Who knew that people in London were such big Springsteen fans? Or was Hyde Park just full of expats? It was sad to see a solid film like The Green Zone completely fall flat at the box office. Its failure made it increasingly less likely that high-budgets will be spent on smart, complex films. Shame that. How can anyone not think that Exile on Main Street is the Stones' best album? Same goes for this as their best song. Entourage hasn't been good since the Aquaman season, and yet I continue to watch. I didn't love the first season of Hung, but how do you not keep up with the great Thomas Jane?
Mutant Chronicles Premiere @ The Mann Bruin Theater April 21st
I'm a sucker for the general reappropriation of sci-fi narratives by the big screen, and Magnolia Pictures' Mutant Chronicles fits that bill. If you're not a purist, you can freely enjoy the costumes, overacting, and all around ass kicking that often hallmarks these larger-than-life endeavors without feeling disparaged by directorial liberties and script deviations. On the other hand, if you were the original owner of the 1993 role-playing game and gobbled up the subsequent franchise that spawned from its success, you might have to concede to some changes.
DVD Tuesday: Slim Pickings
was the last David Lynch movie that I really dug. Bill Pullman--in all of his confused Everyman glory--was a perfect fit for Lynch's surreal and scuzzy universe.
