It’s been over two and a half years since the devastating Indian Ocean tsunami killed an estimated 200,000 people. Apart from updates commemorating the anniversary in the mainstream media, new stories of rebuilding and the long-term aftermath have been a challenge to find. This Sunday, a sample sale open to the public for Suba Ude, a cooperative of tsunami-affected seamstresses in Matara, Sri Lanka, will take place at a private residence in Venice. Hosted by Suba Ude co-founder Heather Goodwin, the sale will celebrate the rural livelihood program for 25 tsunami-affected women who have created an amazing collection of bags, pants, tops, dresses and gowns. These items are not made in factories, but individually handcrafted by each woman in her own home. A local seamstress will be at the sale to do minor alterations free of charge. Proceeds raised will go towards sustaining the cooperative back in Sri Lanka and supporting these women who continue to struggle with rebuilding their lives.

This Sunday, LA's theatre community--the companies, actors, supporters and fans--are hosting Applause for August Wilson, a tribute event for the playwright who passed away on October 2 at the age of 60. The brief, one hour long event will conclude with each of the titles of Wilson's "decade" plays (including Fences, The Piano Lesson, and Ma Rainey's Black Bottom) will be called-out, one at a time, followed by the audience giving Wilson and his plays 1 full-minute of grateful applause, for a total of 10 minutes. Scheduled participants include the African Grove Institute for the Arts (California Chapter), Center Theatre Group, League of Allied Arts Corporation, Robey Theatre Company, and the Towne Street Theatre. The tribute aims to be simple, solemn, and timely, and a chance for the community to gather to honor the life of a playwright who dedicated his life's work to chrnonicling the African-American experience in the twentieth century. Christmas in LA has always been kind of a muted affair. Too many of the hallmarks of the season are in short supply in SoCal. There's no snow, no sleigh rides, and palm trees just don't make a suitable substitute for Christmas trees. There's a reason they film all those Christmas movies in New York. There are no "Miracles on Wilshire Boulevard." So every year around this time, while New York transforms into a magical winter wonderland full of Christmas spirit, LA has always just kind of thrown up its hands, put up a few lights here and there and waited for spring to roll around.
