While the Great UCLA Versus USC Debate may never reach a resolution (those damn Trojans are too hard-headed and engorged with pride to recognize true superiority when they see it), all Californians can hold their heads up with pride thanks to our excellent universities. I don't know if you noticed the recent Washington Monthly ratings of the nation's top schools, but they're giving the U.S. News and World Report a run for their money.......

The fallout from Appalachian State’s upset over Michigan extended beyond Michigan falling out of the Associated Press Top 25 poll. The AP announced on Thursday that lower division schools are now eligible to be included in the poll. It’s great that the Championship Subdivision (aka Division I-AA) has a chance of being ranked alongside the big boys. While I highly doubt that a team even as accomplished as Appalachian State will crack the Top......

According to Berkeley Breathed's official website, this morning's and next Sunday's "Opus" comic strip will be pulled from a "large number" of newspapers around the nation including The Washington Post. The famed Pulitzer Prize-winning cartoonist of "Bloom County" returned to the funny pages in 2003 after an 8-year hiatus, and it appears that he is back where he belongs, getting under the skin of the conservative and easily-offended. Metafilter has an interesting thread about......

CBS says it is one parent distorting the picture of Kid Nation, a reality show about 40 kids, 40 days and no adults that premieres on September 19th. But news outlets are on the attack with Lisa de Moraes of The TV Column at The Washington Post rounding up the media coverage: The news reports on "Kid Nation" to date are the stuff PR-nightmare legends are made of: charges of thwarting child-labor laws; parents......

Despite some resentment about yesterday's fare hikes and attitude from some that Metro has failed this city, they continue to win awards. Today, the San Fernando Business Journal announces that Metro has won a top honor from The Society for Environmental Graphic Design (SEGD): The Washington, D.C.-based organization chose Metro because of its new paint schemes for the bus fleet, new building façade for the Wilshire Customer Center and new signage and identification for......

As we sat down to write this week's Best of the -ists post, a car blaring "21 Questions'" passed by our house. Check out the Best of the -ists from this week, and see if you agree. Londonist answers the questions "How much......

Phillyist notes a fistfight between local pols that leaves one man down for the count. Jehovah's Witnesses get a Philly contributor out of bed, things get a little geeky with a film festival and geeky gets taken to a whole new galaxy when they talk with the Dragon Queen of the Dark Kingdom. Shanghaist gets all excited this week over a new nightclub in the city unfortunately named "Snatch" and Mike Tyson is scheduled to......

Are you ready for “The Big Game?” Have you gotten your “Super Deals” to feed your guests for today’s pigskin contest? LAist loves this time of year to watch the ways retailers bend over backwards to promote their specials for The Big Kahuna—the mother of all football games. They advertise to the masses in generic terms so they don’t have to pay a licensing fee to the NFL to use those two copyrighted words......

First, we celebrated her birthday then we wondered what really happened when a body ended up in her house the day after The Oscars. Sadly, now we know. The Washington Times reports that Republican Media Advisor R. Gregory Stevens died of a drug overdose in Carrie Fisher's home. The Coronor's report says he had heavy doses of cocaine and OxyContin in his system. This begs the question: exactly what kind of party was Ms.......

The Washington Post profiles Juan Alvarez, the man who police say caused the Glendale train wreck. According to the story, Alvarez's family believes that he left his parked Jeep on the tracks because: "He was there, and out of nowhere he basically saw a light," says Carmelita Alvarez, who has visited her husband in jail. "Not the light from the train. He said he felt like there was a presence from God telling him......

It's still almost impossible to believe. The Lakers have traded Shaq? For real? The Washington Post broke the news first, that the Lakers and Miami Heat have agreed to a trade which will send Shaq to South Beach for Lamar Odom, Caron Butler, Brian Grant, and a future draft pick. The deal is still pending league approval. Before we break down this deal, LAist would like to take the opportunity to berate both Shaq......
