December is list-making season. And for us music journalists, it is a time to look back on scores of albums, reflect upon the music and recapitulate our favorites. But this year, just like the last, we took this opportunity to flip that tradition upside down, asking the artists that influenced us what influenced them. The prompt was not limited to albums that came out in 2008.
Last Tuesday, local blues/rock duo HoneyHoney (MySpace) -- previously mentioned here -- celebrated the release of their debut full-length album at the Hotel Cafe (MySpace) in Hollywood, with openers The Sweet Hurt (MySpace) and Miss Willie Brown (MySpace).
On Saturday night, The Parson Redheads (MySpace) -- previously mentioned here -- headlined a local Aquarium Drunkard (MySpace) showcase at Spaceland (MySpace) in Silver Lake, supported by openers The Sweet Hurt (MySpace) and Willougby (MySpace) as well as the Ventura-based The Spires (MySpace).
Last Sunday, local Alex Lilly's solo project Obi Best (MySpace), formerly known as Colorforms (MySpace), performed the first show of her month-long residency, celebrating the release of her debut album , at Tangier in Los Feliz.
Earlier this month, local band The Sweet Hurt (MySpace) celebrated the release of their EP with a release party at Pehrspace (MySpace) in Echo Park, with Evan Slamka from Marjorie Fair (MySpace), Liz Pappademas (MySpace), and Alex Lilly from Obi Best (MySpace), formerly known as Colorforms (MySpace).
Nobody better covers the LA indie music scene than the local blogs, which include LA-Underground, Radio Free Silver Lake, Rock Insider, You Set The Scene, Squaregirls, Aquarium Drunkard, Classical Geek Theatre, Amateur Chemist, and the now-defunct Buzz Bands. Besides spotlighting up-and-coming artists and posting concert photos, many of those blogs regularly present shows -- Radio Free Silverlake's Let's Independent! have included The Happy Hollows (MySpace), The Deadly Syndrome (MySpace), Castledoor (MySpace), and Everest (MySpace).
Last Tuesday, local singer/songwriter Jesca Hoop (MySpace), whose album was number one on Nic Harcourt's Top Ten Albums of 2007, performed at the Hotel Cafe in Hollywood.
