FYF Fest - LA State Historic Park - 9/5/09 - Part 1

FYF Fest - LA State Historic Park - 9/5/09 - Part 1

At the end of Fucked Up’s powerful, frenetic set, frontman Pink Eyes looks out at the crowd and says something along the lines of “You can say we played the Hipster Woodstock. You can say we play punk rock. One thing I know, my hips are in a state of shock.” It’s actually a fitting summary of last Saturday’s FYF festival - whose crowd is a healthy cross-section of young hipsters, and aging punk rockers with bad hips. I’m not entirely sure of the significance, but there seems to be a poetic irony in the proliferation of teenagers in Black Flag T-shirts and forty-somethings in Vivian Girls T-shirts. more ›

FYF Fest - In Photos

Long lines and food shortages aside, it would be hard to call the FYF Fest anything but a success. Now in it's sixth year, an inspired lineup and a great cause made the "hipster Woodstock" the most successful F-Yeah yet. In-depth reviews are fothcoming, and make sure to check out more LAist coverage here. more ›

Tonight In Rock: Madonna, Linda Ronstadt, TV On The Radio, Coheed And Cambria

Tonight In Rock: Madonna, Linda Ronstadt, TV On The Radio, Coheed And Cambria

Talk about a show explosion! Tonight Madonna will be entertaining the masses at Dodger Stadium. NY-based rock band Coheed and Cambria (LAist Review) will begin a series of shows at the Avalon in which they play each of their four albums in their entirety—tonight they'll be revisiting 2002's The Second Stage Turbine Blade. Local blues-rock band Rumspringa (LAist Review) will be playing at the Viper Room for the Day of the Living Party. And just about every music blogger and their mother will be in attendance at 3 of Clubs tonight, where SF natives Birds & Batteries and the Blacks will be performing. But the real tough choice of the night is between the Happy Hollows' (LAist Review, #2) EP Release Event at the Echo and TV on the Radio (LAist Review) at the Wiltern. The former certainly affords a bevy of superb lesser-known acts, like LBC's the Soft Hands and our personal favorite, Austin-by-way-of-Dallas the Strange Boys (LAist Review, #2). However, we can't deny the latter's latest effort, 2008's Dear Science. So head on over to the Wiltern to catch the buzzworthy Brooklyn-based indie rock quintet. more ›

Tonight In Rock: Justice, Rise Against, The Secret Machines, Asobi Seksu

Tonight In Rock: Justice, Rise Against, The Secret Machines, Asobi Seksu

Happy Halloween! Tonight there are tons of concerts across the Greater Los Angeles Area. We were looking forward to the Little Radio extravaganza in the outskirts of Downtown. Unfortunately, "the titanic team-up that had to happen" simply floundered. But, thankfully, that isn't stopping the Henry Clay People. They will be performing tonight at the Cat and Fiddle Pub in Hollweird with Long Beach-based rockers the Tall Hands. The monolithic Parisian electro duo Justice will be headlining a line-up at the Shrine Auditorium that is sure to sate anyone who's craving a dance party—including sets from Daedelus, Soulwax, Boys Noize, Crystal Castles, Crookers and Simian Mobile Disco, among many others. The Secret Machines are the special guests of a psych-induced bill over at Spaceland, which features LA locals the Entrance Band and Dead Meadow's own Jason Simon. And NY-based shoegazer Asobi Seksu will be putting onlookers at the Echo in a heavily distorted trance. It was exactly two years ago to date that Spaceland Recordings released Live at the Echo 10/6/06. We can't rule out the possibility of another recording. So we certainly suggest heading over to commemorate the release and potentially partake in history again. But we're embarking on a rowdy adventure an hour southward! Say what? The Growlers, who recently won Best Rock Band in the OC Weekly's annual Best Of List, and Austin-by-way-of-Dallas the Strange Boys (LAist Review) will be unleashing retro 60s, garage-style blues-rock at the Womens Club in Laguna Beach. We know it's a hell of a drive, but it'll be the most rollicking Halloween experience of your life. more ›

The Strange Boys @ Secret Headquarters 09/21/07

The Strange Boys @ Secret Headquarters 09/21/07

Last Friday night in a small, nondescript office space in the middle of Denton, Texas, The Strange Boys put on an unforgettable show for twenty five unsuspecting kids. After hearing Keith and Sean rave about them, I saw them at the Fuck Yeah Fest and they absolutely blew me away. I became obsessed with this band immediately because they're doing something literally no one else is: reviving 60s garage rock. At times I hear... more ›

Fuck Yeah Fest Day Two 08/26/07
