5 Local Artists to Watch This Weekend @ Sunset Junction

             + 2 more

As you may have heard, the 29th annual Sunset Junction Street Festival is this weekend. "I've only attended the last three years, and never knew the festival back in [its] free days," says Brad Roberts from Radio Free Silver Lake. "So, frankly, the cost isn't as much of an issue for me as it is for others. The days of expecting a bankrupt state and federal government to provide something as ephemeral as a music festival, are, unfortunately, relics of the past. I have thoroughly enjoyed myself at the last three, all of which introduced me to many of the local bands who are regular favorites of mine. The cultural mix is a Los Angeles specialty and in spite of occasionally resembling a frying pan, everyone seems to really enjoy themselves, the variety of food available is impressive and the atmosphere remains laid back and So Cal." more ›

Tonight In Rock: Stone Temple Pilots, Mike Ness, The Deadly Syndrome, Rocco Deluca

Tonight Social Distortion (LAist Review) front man Mike Ness will be concluding an extensive sojourn at the El Rey Theatre. The Hotel Café is hosting the second night of a three-date "ho-ho-tel" holiday extravaganza, featuring singer-songwriter types like Rocco Deluca (LAist Review). Pehrspace will be throwing the first Pehr Spacecraft Faire, which integrates great pop music and fun crafts. And to further substantiate the claim that KROQ is suspended in the late 90s, the Offspring (LAist Review), Stone Temple Pilots and AFI will be headlining Almost Acoustic Christmas (LAist Review, #2) at the Gibson Amphitheatre. But no one in their right mind would pass up the Second Annual Christmas Sweater Festival at the Echoplex. Tonight in Rock: Mika, Bangkok Five, Mon. Night Residencies

Sometimes Monday nights lead to tough choices. For Jax at Rock Insider, it's between The Pity Party (who we interviewed this morning) and The Henry Clay People. Luckily, both bands are playing all month. Still, there are many choices. If you like your music Folk, your drinks cheap and have never been to Joe's Great American Bar & Grill in Burbank, it's a pretty sweet place to catch music seven days a week -- tonight is Dafni. more ›

LAist Interview: The Pity Party

LAist Interview: The Pity Party

Local duo The Pity Party is playing the second show of their month-long Monday residency at Spaceland tonight. Much has been made about drummer/keyboardist/singer Heisenflei and her triple-threat instrumentation. But even if she weren’t an octopus, Heisenflei and guitarist/singer Maurice-Richard would still be stirring up L.A. with their smartly sparse songwriting and quirky melodies. We asked Heisenflei, who also runs The Little Knittery in Atwater Village, a few questions before the show. Continue on to read more about The Pity Party unplugged, the progress of their full-length album and their morbid fear of handshakes. more ›

109 LA Bands to Play SXSW

109 LA Bands to Play SXSW

Every March in Austin is like Mecca for music and techies. South by Southwest (SXSW) is one of the most popular interactive and music conferences, always hosted in the Texan city that has been honored as one of the creative cities in America. Out of the 1200 or so bands playing from around the world, 109 are from Los Angeles and LA County(give or take a few depending on errors in the list from SXSW, ex: Meiko lives in LA, not Georgia anymore). Add in some other nearby areas and make that 122 bands. more ›

The Pity Party's Top Ten of 2007

The Pity Party's Top Ten of 2007

I've always been intrigued by other "best of" lists, but this year I decided to take it to a whole new level. I e-mailed a handful of bands that I've seen this past year in order to unearth what exactly captivated them in '07. As music listeners, it is our duty to take a keen interest in our favorite musician's influences. After all, they rocked our little world, might as well see what rocked their little world. Therefore, this is an act of paying it forward to those hardworking, underpaid musicians who truly made a difference within the music scene this year. more ›
