LAist readers who grew up in the ’80s might look back and remember the decade as one with music that was mostly crap (Wham!, Debbie Gibson, Scritti Politti, et al) but with movies that were, like, totally tubular awesome. It was a heyday, nay, we’ll go so far as to call it a golden era for teen and/or young adult films.

- You've come a long way baby. Maxim ditches the usual suspects (models, actresses, hookers, waitresses) and celebrates the sexiest comedian of our time, next to Gallagher of course - egotastic - Talk about burying the lede... magician du jour Criss Angel spotting partying with Cameron Diaz AND Drew Barrymore. If that dude has any magical powers he would have dressed up as Lucy Liu and played Charlie's Angels 4 with the pair all...
We have a love-hate relationship with film reviews. How many times have you read a glowing review by a trusted critic only to be disappointed in the theater? (Come on, was Napoleon Dynamite really all that?) Or conversely, you're dragged to a film that's been panned by most -- only to end up enjoying it? (We'll admit that we did like The Notebook. But don't tell anybody.)
Ambitious-Outsiders has a more complete lineup than the official site (how'd that happen) but what jumped out at us on this year's Sunset Junction Street Fair lineup is all the old school soul showing up on the Edgecliffe Stage. Freda Payne, The Supremes not named Diana Ross and Richard Street all perform on Saturday while 80's R&B songstress Jody Watley shows up on Sunday. We might be most excited about Watley performing. She put out a surprisingly good (and very much unnoticed) neo-soul/downtempo-ish CD a few years ago called Midnight Lounge.
LAist once saw someone do a karaoke rendition of Cheap Trick's "Surrender" that involved a blow-up guitar; particularly considering that the act took place in a coffee house, it was an impressive show. LAist is willing to concede, however, that tonight's actual Cheap Trick show at the Canyon Club will probably top it. Doors open at 6:00 PM for dinner reservations; the show starts at 8:00 PM. Tickets are $42.50.
Vroman's Bookstore in Pasadena will have in-store displays of favorite books that have banned in the past, such as those authored by Dr. Suess and Mark Twain.
