For the third year, the Los Angeles Philharmonic is producing a series that explores a single topic, usually one that reaches from the hardcore to the non-traditional classical going audiences. In 2006, it was Minimalist Fest. featuring famed compositions of the minimalism movement and an all night concert til 4 a.m. with The Orb and other trance artists. This past year was From Shadow to Stalin, an exploration of Eastern Europe, classical musics to the band, DeVotchka.

Released in 1989 and composed and recorded in 1987, American composer Steve Reich's minimalist "Electric Counterpoint" has fascinated, hypnotized and inspired choreographers and musicians alike (think The Orb's "Little Fluffy Clouds"). Reich explains explains the composition as such: "In Electric Counterpoint the soloist pre-records as many as ten guitars and two electric bass parts and then plays the final 11th guitar part live against tape... Electric Counterpoint is in three movements -- fast, slow, fast...

LA Weekly's Caroline Ryder was wondering if she would be hugging people "1992-style" at yesterday morning's (really early morning) Minimalist Jukebox concert featuring The Orb at Walt Disney Concert Hall. No hugging was spotted, but plenty of what looked to be ex-ravers from 1992 (plus one guy in a tie-dye t-shirt who never stopped dancing).

We really hope you don't come to Disney Hall to sleep, but we're sure Frank Gehry made room for some comfortable spots.

The Philharmonic plays there. President Clinton speaks there. Now The Orb will be making ambient love in the Disney Concert Hall house all night long, starting just before midnight this Saturday and not packing up until 6am.
