Local singer-songwriter Angela Correa's band Correatown has held this month's Monday residency at The Echo, and tonight is their final show before embarking next month on a European tour. While this gallery features photos taken during their soundcheck with Eagle & Talon and The Voyeurs, see photos from the actual show at Web In Front.
Soundcheck: Correatown, Eagle & Talon, The Voyeurs @ The Echo 10/5/09
Tonight In Rock: DâM-FunK, Themselves, Firs, The Movies
Tonight Oakland-based experimental hip hop duo Themselves will be headlining Spaceland. LA-based indie rock outfit Firs will be performing at the Bootleg Theatre. And, lastly, LAist favorites, local fringe rock outfit the Movies (LAist Review, #2) will be taking on Bordello in Downtown. But we strongly suggest heading over to the Airliner in Lincoln Heights to catch Los Angeles' own "Ambassador of Boogie Funk," Culver City-based DJ/selector DâM-FunK, who will be ringing in his debut LP—Toeachizown Vol. 1: LAtrik—with none other than local electronic musician/producer/MC Thavius Beck.
Tonight In Rock: The Movies, The Minor Canon, Olin and the Moon, Downtown/Union
Tonight local alt-rockers Olin and the Moon (LAist Interview) will be ringing in their latest disc at the Echo. LA-based indie rock act the Minor Canon are poised to usher in a new record as well at Spaceland with Long Beach-based chanteuse Deep Sea Diver (LAist Review). And, lastly, local indie rockers Downtown/Union will be gracing Mr. T's Bowl. But we strongly suggest heading over to Bordello to catch LAist favorites the Movies (LAist Review, #2). Pasadena-based indie electro duo Odd Modern are slated to kick things off.
Tonight In Rock: The Airborne Toxic Event, The Movies, Lemon Sun, Bobb Bruno
Tonight LA-based buzz band the Airborne Toxic Event (LAist Interview, #2, Review, #2, #3, #4, #5) will be headlining the Henry Fonda Music Box. Local indie rockers Lemon Sun will be ringing in their latest effort at the Troubadour with a handful of great bands, including Voxhaul Broadcast, Rumspringa and Restavrant. And, lastly, experimental instrumentalist Bobb Bruno will be playing the Smell in Downtown. But we strongly suggest heading over to the Echoplex to catch fringe rockers the Movies (LAist Review, #2, #3, #4). LAist favorites Crooked Cowboy & the Freshwater Indians are slated to kick off the show.
Tonight In Rock: Robin Thicke, Everest, The Movies, Rio En Medio
Tonight marks the final night of the ongoing free Monday Night Residencies. Silver Lake-based alternative rockers the Color Turning will be performing at the Silver Lake Lounge. The Manimal Vinyl Residency at the Echo is coming to a close with folk songstress Rio En Medio headlining the bill. And if you've got the scrilla, then we suggest heading over to Club Nokia to catch Robin Thicke belting out sensual R&B tunes. But we recommend planting your feet down at Spaceland, where fringe rockers the Movies (LAist Review, #2, #3) will be closing out their month-long residency. LAist's favorite alt-rockers Everest (LAist Review, #2), who just concluded a successful stint with Neil Young and Wilco, are slated to perform as well. It doesn't get any better than that!
Tonight In Rock: The Movies, Voxhaul Broadcast, Polyamorous Affair, The Color Turning
Tonight LA is filled to the brim with free residencies. We've got the Manimal Vinyl Residency at the Echo with Polyamorous Affair as headliners. Silver Lake-based alternative rockers The Color Turning will trek on at the Silver Lake Lounge with the Capshuns. And, lastly, Sean Carnage is throwing Crunk On Christ Party at the hole-and-corner Pehrspace, which is generally free as well. But we strongly recommend plopping down at Spaceland to catch LAist favorites the Movies (LAist Review, #2, #3, #4), who will be tearing down the house with exuberant high kicks. Local indie rockers Voxhaul Broadcast is slated to open the show.
Soundcheck: The Movies, Rademacher & Sarah Negahdari and The Sad Solids @ Spaceland, 12/8/08
Last Monday, local indie band The Movies (MySpace) continued their month-long residency at Spaceland (MySpace) in Silver Lake, with support from Sarah Negahdari and The Sad Solids (the acoustic version of The Happy Hollows), Rademacher (MySpace), and Vibe Slayer (MySpace). It was also a release party for The Movies' new album , and what a party it was.
Tonight In Rock: Cheap Trick, Mike Stinson, The Movies, Gangi
Tonight Rockford-based rockers Cheap Trick will kick off a two-night stint at the House of Blues Sunset. Local fringe rock outfit the Movies (LAist Review, #2) are slated to continue their Monday Night Residency at Spaceland. And, lastly, Mike Stinson is headlining a country-centric bill at the Echoplex. But we recommend stopping by the Echo to catch the Manimal Vinyl Residency. Local experimental folk rockers Gangi (LAist Review) will be fusing beats, sound bites and a distinctive nasal tenor. Besides, you're probably all Movies-ed out by now—if that's even possible.
Tonight In Rock: AC/DC, Demi Lovato, Fall Out Boy, The Plain White T's
Tonight Australian hard rockers AC/DC will be coming through the Forum. Chicago-based pop punk outfit Fall Out Boy are slated to perform at the Troubadour. And speaking of Chi-town, the Plain White T's will be rocking out at the Roxy. But we strongly suggest that you head over to Spaceland tonight for the Free Monday Night Residency. LA locals the Movies are so good we might just pick them every Monday night.
Tonight In Rock: The Movies, Herbaliser, The Colour Turning, Jason Diaz
There is a noticeable shortage of shows tonight in LA. Weave! are closing out their residency at the Echo with Fool's Gold and We Are the World. The Colour Turning will be performing at the Silverlake Lounge. But the only place to be tonight is Spaceland, where the the Movies (LAist Review, #2) will be kicking off their month-long residency. Local music journalist Kevin Bronson will be DJing. And, of course, it's free!
Tonight In Rock: Inara George, No Age, The Deadly Syndrome, Shiloe
Sunday afternoon in LA has been taken over by matinee performances. We're really excited about Kid Rockers, a wondrous series of shows that aims to bring families and great indie music/comedy together. LA-based indie rockers the Deadly Syndrome and the Afternoons will be playing at the Echo for the kiddies, along with comedians Patton Oswalt and Seth Herzog. You must have a child in hand to gain entrance. Inara George ("bird") and Greg Kurstin ("bee") will be performing a special solo show up the street at Tangier Restaurant in Los Feliz. But for those of you who are looking to enjoy a lazy Sunday afternoon, we suggest you save your energy for the Bigler Benefit Show at the Echoplex. The fundraiser, which features hometown favorites No Age and the Movies, is being held in Michele Bigler's honor. Recently, the artist/local music scene fixture was diagnosed with cancer and, like far too many Americans, does not have health insurance. All proceeds will go towards Bigler's treatment.

The Movies - Based On A True Story | Abnormally Epic
The Movies are the most enigmatic entity I’ve ever stumbled across. They are simply legendary in Los Angeles. Fans practically worship the ground that front man Timothy James walks on. Or at least that’s what I’ve witnessed. Regardless, there’s a barefaced glory and honor that comes along with calling yourself a fan of the Movies.

Soundcheck: The Airborne Toxic Event, The Deadly Syndrome & The Henry Clay People @ Spaceland, 6/17/08
Last month, local band The Airborne Toxic Event (MySpace) returned to Spaceland (MySpace) in Silver Lake to headline a show that included The Deadly Syndrome (MySpace), and The Henry Clay People (MySpace) with support from I Make This Sound (MySpace) and Le Switch (MySpace). As aptly described by Mouse from Classical Geek Theatre, "Before a mixed-crowd of longtime fans and recent, true-believing converts, The Airborne Toxic Event rewarded ticket holders with a near flawless-set that could have just as easily been played at The Hollywood Bowl, The Kodak Theatre, or Coachella. There was no melodrama, very little hype, and nobody on stage had to prove anything. It was just the band and their songs; naked, raw, hard-boiled."
The Art Of Ronald Dzerigian w/ The Pity Party @ Echo Curio, 7/3/08
Last Thursday, Echo Curio (MySpace) presented a show with local artist Ronald Dzerigian (MySpace) and local band The Pity Party (MySpace). Much of The Pity Party's merchandise showcases Dzerigian's artwork, and this evening featured their free limited-edition show-exclusive EP).

Live Review: Acute @ The Troubadour 06/20/07
Last night's show was underwhelming. Not in terms of performance, but in terms of turnout. Given, the show was up against NME's David Bazan extravaganza (ouch). I feel compelled to expose the flaws in order to prove that Acute deserves much, much more. As I arrive fashionably late, I walk into the Troubadour and my jaw drops. There's no more than 50 people inside as Acute began their set with the upbeat 'Rip Your Heart Out!'. Nevertheless, the band dove head first into a set full of foot-tapping songs. Frontman Isaac Lekach successfully carried the band to safety from the Hot Water Music fans with the usual playful and endearing antics. He joked about getting stopped at the border for marijuana possession, despite not having any, and played the beginning of the set with a fake mustache, subsequently attaching it to his guitar for the remainder. Other highlights included: the irrefutably infectious 'Take A Step Back', the prom-perfect 'You Could End Up In Love', the sing-song 'Trouble' and an unbelievable cover of Electric Light Orchestra's classic 'Mr. Blue Sky'. I just couldn't get over the fact that such a tightly knit performance could pass so carelessly under everyone's radar. The crowd's distance from the front of the stage conveyed an overall hesitancy to approach, even to truly connect. Who would've thought? Hot Water Music front-man, Chuck Ragan, and Jesse Malin, who's most notably recognized through his associations with Ryan Adams, formed an abrupt conclusion to Acute's resoundingly poppy set.
