Tonight in Rock: The Kevin Eubanks Group

Tonight in Rock: The Kevin Eubanks Group

We seemed to have missed Santa Monica based Krandon as a Wednesday night resident at Molly Malone's. The lightly meditative and chill alternative indie band's name comes from an abandoned James Joyce play written in collaboration with physicist Neils Bohr according to the band's MySpace page. If that's a little too esoteric for you, our Wednesday night pick this month is a little more down home folk style, but with a loud presence -- Brian Wright & The Waco Tragedies. But Wright and his country buddies pose a difficult choice to make with Jay Leno's very own Kevin Eubanks, who plays at The Baked Potato tonight in Studio City. more ›

Weekend Music Picks

Weekend Music Picks

Fri 5/5 - Islands @ The El Rey ($12) – Montreal’s Islands are an eccentric indie pop band that formed out of the ashes of the Unicorns. Don’t hold that against them, they’re much better than the Unicorns. The band can still be too cutesy at times (the song “Don’t Call Me Whitney, Bobby” doesn’t seem to have anything to do with Whitney, Bobby or Curtis Mayfield) but the arrangements are more fleshed out and enjoyable. Underground rappers Busdriver and Subtitle make appearances on the record; maybe they’ll enhance the live show too? Listen to some tracks at Myspace (“Rough Gem” and “Don’t Call Me Whitney, Bobby” are a good place to start). more ›
