Tonight In Rock: The Mae Shi, Local Natives, Le Switch, The Rhone Occupation

Tonight local experimental rockers the Mae Shi will be performing at the Smell (LAist Interview, Review, #2) in Downtown. LA-based indie rock outfit Le Switch are continuing their residency at Spaceland. And, lastly, the Rhone Occupation will be rocking out at the Airliner. But we strongly suggest heading over to the Silver Lake Lounge to catch the second night of Local Natives' month-long residency.

Tonight In Rock: Eagles of Death Metal, Matt & Kim, The Soft Pack, Castledoor

Tonight Palm Desert-bred rockers Eagles of Death Metal will be headlining the Henry Fonda Music Box. Brooklyn-based punk/dance duo Matt & Kim are slated to perform at the Troubadour with experimental rockers the Mae Shi (LAist Interview, Review, #2) in tow. LAist favorites the Soft Pack (formerly known as the Muslims) are slated to rock with San Diegan garage rock outfit Crocodiles at the Echo early on in the night. English electro-pop sensation Little Boots will be gracing the stage at Spaceland. And, lastly, local indie rockers Castledoor (LAist Review, #2, #3, #4, #5, #6) are poised to play Bordello. But we strongly suggest stopping by the Silver Lake Lounge to see electro-pop songstress Glasser.

Tonight In Rock: Fountains of Wayne, Metronomy, Army Navy, The Ettes

Tonight LAist's favorite English electro-pop outfit Metronomy (LAist Review) will be headlining the El Rey Theatre with local experimental rockers the Mae Shi (LAist Interview, Review, #2) in tow. LA-based garage rockers the Ettes are coming through Spaceland with the Useless Keys for this week's edition of Club NME. Local indie rockers Army Navy (LAist Interview, #2, Review) will be rocking out for Obama at the Rock the Vote's Inaugural Bash at the Troubadour. And, lastly, Seattle-based experimental electronic quartet Truckasauras are making their LA debut at Boardner's. But we suggest you head over to Largo at the Coronet to catch Northampton-bred power pop act Fountains of Wayne (LAist Interview).

Tonight New Orleans-based rapper Lil' Wayne is slated to headline the Gibson Amphitheatre. LA's own electronic genius Daedelus will be headlining the Echoplex and will be accompanied by Busdriver, the Mae Shi, Rumspringa and the Entrance Band. And although that stellar bill is all too enticing, we strongly recommend stopping by the Hotel Café for Buddyhead's Christmas Party. A trough full of celebrated local musicians, like QOTSA front man Josh Homme, Dead Meadow front man Jason Simon, Xu Xu Fang (LAist Review, #2, #3) and LAist favorites Dios (Malos) (LAist Interview), will preside over the unruly procession.

December is list-making season. And for us music journalists, it is a time to look back on scores of albums, reflect upon the music and recapitulate our favorites. But this year, just like the last, we took this opportunity to flip that tradition upside down, asking the artists that influenced us what influenced them. The prompt was not limited to albums that came out in 2008.

It's the first Monday of the month and thus we've got a bevy of new Monday Night Residencies. Local indie rockers the Western States Motel will be kicking things off at Spaceland. And WEAVE! will be embarking on their month-long residency at the Echo. Fresh off the heels of a record release party, LA-based the Monolators will grace the hole-and-corner Pehrspace. Delaware-based pop rock maestros the Spinto Band will be performing at the Echoplex with Scottish indie rockers Frightened Rabbit and one of our favorite local bands, Miniature Tigers (LAist Review). Lastly, Vancouver's own Mother Mother will be showcasing their disjointed yet entirely appealing tunes at the Silver Lake Lounge. But the lineup at the El Rey Theatre tonight is downright irresistible. Swedish songstress Lykke Li (LAist Review, #2) will be accompanied by not only SoCal mainstays the Mae Shi (LAist Interview, Review, #2) and Grand Ole Party (LAist Review, #2, #3), but also St. Albans own electro-pop act Friendly Fires (LAist Review).

Tonight LA will face a glut of shows. We've got the GuerilLA Fest, which is essentially a renegade traveling circus of sorts. Six bands, including LAist favorites the Happy Hollows (LAist Review), will form a caravan, traveling around the city and playing succinct sets at six different public locales. New Orleans-by-way-of-Chicago Telefon Tel Aviv will be demonstrating their electronic mastery at the Avalon with Detroit-based, dance floor-oriented singer-songwriter Matthew Dear. If you're into archetypal metal, or Guitar Hero for that matter, then Austin-based the Sword will be performing at the Henry Fonda Music Box. Tonight will also mark the final show of Richmond-based Denali's reunion tour. The girl-fronted indie rock act will be performing—original lineup and all—at the Echoplex. It will surely be a night to remember! And, lastly, Kentucky's own troubadours These United States will grace the rather schlocky Cocaine at Live Jazz. But, all in all, the Barack Obama benefit show at the Smell seems to be most promising. LA locals the Mae Shi (LAist Interview) will be rocking out for the cause, along with Bad Dudes and a slew of other experimental rock bands.

What Made Milwaukee Famous finish up their Los Angeles tour playing along with Tulsa and the British Sea Power/Colourmusic bill moves over to Spaceland. On the Westside, there's only one choice to make and that is hip-hop violinist Paul Dateh at the Temple Bar (check out our interview with him including video). Over in Little Tokyo, Vosotros is having a record release party at LAND for their new album featuring 12 bands. You can get the music free on iTunes via their podcast (search "vosotros the lazy susan" and click on the image)

LAist loves Honor Student. They are a trio of L.A. funnymen-filmmakers: David's the one with the great hair who makes incredibly realistic masturbation faces. He stars in this installment of "Chasing Donovan", their on-going series of short comedic episodes (they've also done videos for The Mae Shi). Matt and Oz work behind the scenes, and their hair is also not too bad. They are also possibly the only Oklahoman-Dominican directing duo working in the...

Tuesday returns, and with it the overwhelming urge to empty the entire contents of one's bank account into the waiting coffers of Amoeba Music. It is a daily struggle not to give up the entire grocery budget in favor of finally compiling the ultimate record collection, but a struggle LAist is winning nevertheless—unless the bi-weekly shopping trips count against the groceries.

LAist likes nothing so much as a three-day weekend. Of course, you have to make it through Friday first—but that is so little to ask in return for sleeping in on Monday. Below are LAist's picks for this (long) weekend's entertainment. Get out there and enjoy your holiday!
