2nd Annual Rock n' Roll Circus feat. The Henry Clay People, Andy Clockwise, Downtown/Union & The Little Ones

             + 43 more

The Henry Clay People did a wonderful job at the 2nd annual Rock n' Roll Circus. With more than a dozen bands performing, free popcorn, face painting, and costumes and decorations in full force, this year's circus was exhilarating. Bands such as Downtown/Union, the Little Ones, Andy Clockwise, and of course the Henry Clay People turned in great sets alongside a slew of other bands performing full-on electric sets or side stage acoustic sets on the patios of the Echo and Echoplex. Attendance seemed down, or at least nowhere near capacity, which is a shame because the event had none of the pretentiousness that so often accompanies rock shows and instead truly felt like a community event. I for one am looking forward to next year. more ›

Tonight In Rock: The Little Ones, Walter Meego, Deep Sea Diver, World Club

Tonight local indie rockers the Little Ones will be taking on the Echo with none other than Downtown/Union. Long Beach's own pop songstress (and general lass) Jessica Dobson is poised to grace Spaceland under the pseudonym Deep Sea Diver (LAist Review, #2). And, lastly, eclectic Vancouver-based indie rockers World Club will be performing for free, in-store at Origami Vinyl. But we strongly suggest heading over to the hole-and-corner Perhspace to catch O.C.-based indie folk act Gamble House, who recently released their fantastic self-titled, studio-album debut. LAist favorites, LA-by-way-of-Chicago electro pop act Walter Meego (LAist Review) and Mystery Claws, a side-project of Princeton's Matt Kivel that also features Warpaint drummer Stella Mozgawa, are slated to perform as well. more ›

Santa Cruz-based bluegrass act the Devil Makes Three are poised to headline the Troubadour. And, lastly, San Jose's own post-rockers Worker Bee will be taking on Spaceland. But we strongly suggest heading over to the Getty Center Mali-based musician Bassekou Kouyaté & Ngoni Ba, who will be performing for this week's edition of 'Saturday Nights at the Getty.' more ›

Tonight In Rock: Jon Brion, The Little Ones, Gram Rabbit, Afternoons

Tonight is one of those nights where you find yourself asking, "Who isn't playing in LA?" You've just about always got Jon Brion (LAist Review) jamming with friends at Largo at the Coronet. Joshua Tree-based indie rockers Gram Rabbit (LAist Review) will be headlining the Troubadour with English psych rocker Pop Levi in tow. LA's own buzz band the Afternoons (LAist Review, #2) are slated to rock Spaceland with equally buzzworthy Xu Xu Fang (LAist Review, #2, #3, #4, #5). The Hotel Café will be hosting its usual bevy of singer-songwriters, including Greg Laswell (LAist Interview, Review, #2, #3, #4) and HoneyHoney (LAist Review, #2). And, lastly, LAist favorites One Trick Pony and Tenlons Fort (LAist Review, #2) are poised to put on a stellar set at the hole-and-corner Pehrspace. But as enticing as the aforementioned shows may be, we strongly suggest heading over to the Museum of Natural History, where they'll be kicking off the fifth annual First Fridays Series. LA locals the Little Ones will be accompanied by Montreal's finest, Plants And Animals. more ›

Tonight In Rock: Ben Folds, Deerhoof, The (International) Noise Conspiracy, The Little Ones

Tonight there are far too many shows to chose from. We've got the second and final night of pop songstress Alanis Morissette at the Orpheum Theatre in Downtown. Nashville-based piano man Ben Folds is headlining the Wiltern. Jon Brion & Friends will be jamming at the Largo at the Coronet. SF-based noise rockers Deerhoof are slated to wreak havoc on all eardrums at the Echoplex. Local indie rockers the Little Ones are stopping through the Echo. And, of course, Sean Carlson (LAist Interview) of the Fuck Yeah Fest is up to no good again. This time around he's got Sweden's own the (International) Noise Conspiracy playing the tiny stage at the Eagle Rock Arts Center. If you aren't planning on a sweaty, good time, then we strongly suggest you check into Spaceland. Berklee College of Music alums Apollo Sunshine (LAist Interview) will be performing gleaming tunes from 2008's Shall Noise Upon with Athens-based rockers Dead Confederate. more ›

Sea Wolf @ The Troubadour, 5/1/07

Sea Wolf opened for Sloan last night at the Troubadour. The band featured music soon-to-be released EP, Get To The River Before It Runs Too Low. Lead singer Alex Brown Church, the bands only invariable member and also current member of the band Irving, felt like a young Jeff Tweedy. The kind of guy who can’t help but seem genuine in everything he does. Melodically lilting and filled with hopefully melancholy, the songs fit the... more ›

Weekend Live Music Picks

Weekend Live Music Picks

Fri 5/19 - Kelley Stoltz / Irving / The Little Ones @ the Echo ($10) – This is a very strong lineup for the indie pop fans. San Francisco’s Kelley Stoltz put out an overlooked album earlier this year on Sub Pop. He sounded great at the Echo in February, but his set was cut short by a DJ night. Hopefully he won’t be rushed tonight. He writes songs that are informed by all the classic music you love from the late 1960s / early 1970s, but still manages to make them his own. Download “The Sun Comes ThroughYou've already heard us talk about Irving several times before. Their latest album is super catchy and they always put on an energetic live show. Their songs cover the spectrum from early 1980s, Cure-influenced songs to Elephant 6 pop. Download “SituationThe Little Ones are one of our favorite new local bands. They seemed to spring out of nowhere (the lead singer was actually in a popular emo-ish band called Sunday's Best) and immediately caught the attention of the blogosphere. They play sing-along indie pop in the mold of the Shins and Fruit Bats. Download “High on a Hill more ›
