Nearly 500 Teamsters tired of not being able to work for the weekend - because they have to work on some weekends - went on strike early this morning affecting Long Beach, Compton, and Sun Valley. About a quarter million people will be touched by the strike that is based around two major issues, long hours and respect. [Waste Management] said the [Teamsters] contract expired in September and that its latest offer included a......

Ten years ago Long Beach native Morgan J. Freeman was minding his own business in film school back east. Doing what everyone else in his class did, he submitted his thesis film "Hurricane Streets" to Sundance for competition. Not only was it accepted - alongside the "real" movies - but it won three awards at the festivall: Morgan won best director, the cinematographer won for best cinematography, and the film got the audience award......

Saturday I decided to go for the $130. "Premier Pass" at the Long Beach Blues Festival. It was money well-spent. Not only did it get me into the same area as the $1500 pass package, but I was able to get right up in front of the stage. They also had free beer, water and sodas. The free food was just OK, but the hot links were pretty good. I was 2 feet away......

Hundreds of weary, would-be passengers are wandering through parking lots or holed up in their planes at the Long Beach Airport thanks to something suspicious found in a piece of screened luggage. At Viento Y Agua in Long Beach, that's exactly what you'll be getting this weekend. Local photographer and lecturer Mitchell Maher will be taking free photos of the Viento’s patrons all day on Sunday, May 6th. His style......

People like to put us in a box. They like to categorize us. You can't can't put baby in a corner. Just because we love gangsta rap and metal and punk and Gogol Bordello and Rage doesn't mean we don't have any love left for the soulful mellow gooves of bands like Animal Liberation Orchestra aka ALO. In fact just the opposite, we love them and they're one of our new favorite bands. Frisco......

They say New York is the city that never sleeps, but nobody packs in a full day like LA. Best of all, our weather lets us do it any time of the year. LAist's Saturday screamed Angelino, so we couldn't resist a little photo essay .........

Long Beach is ready to party -- their basketball team is the trendy bracket-buster pick to knock off Tennessee in the first round of the NCAA hoops Tournament. Long Beach students are pumped, ready for a big party at the Acapulco Inn. (Well, they'll party at the AI either way.) But we want to pass along a friendly note to Long Beach students: Regardless of what happens with the game, just remember that things could......
