Serendipity is the mother of exaggeration, nevertheless it really did happen that Jeff Goldblum played a jazz set on day two of Coachella. Manifesting a band and a baby grand piano in one of the campgrounds, big G played a barely announced and certainly unofficial 'Funny or Die' mockumentary gig for those heading into the venue.

LAist @ SXSW: Day 3 - Dominique Young Unique, Spank Rock, La Sera, Dum Dum Girls, Boys Noize, Gary Wilson
Having readjusted to the the shock of so many people and bands and free drink specials packed into a few square miles, we thought ourselves prepared for Thursday's festivities - finally in our SXSW stride. We totally forgot that Thursday was St. Patrick's Day. The sea of green that met us as we walked down Lavaca to 6th was a tip off, but it wasn't until we ran into some U of T kids (student population somewhere in the 50,000 range) who informed us it was also spring break, did we realize that we'd be lucky to make it out alive.
LAist @ SXSW : Day 3 - TV On the Radio, The Bangles, The Kills, Portugal. The Man
Imagine a land of wall-to-wall music, booze and BBQ. Now, make it green for St. Patrick's and add the revelry that comes with it, and you have Clusterfuckpalooza '11. The worlds of SXSW and St. Patrick's Day converged Thursday night in Austin in what amounted to a city wide party that would rival the greats. What has been learned and painfully realized in the past few days, is that SXSW is a war of stamina and patience. Treating this like a normal festival will only leave you frustrated and exhausted. At any given time there can be up to 10 bands you really want to see at entirely diffrent points across town, and LAist did the sprinting to bring you photos from some of these killer sets. Thursday night included: The Bangles, TV on The Radio, The Kills and Portugal. The Man.
Tonight In Rock: The Dead Weather, Viva Voce, Busdriver, Slang Chickens
Tonight Nashville-based alternative rock supergroup the Dead Weather, which features Jack White of the White Stripes and Alison Mosshart of the Kills, will be headlining a sold-out show at the Roxy. Local rapper Busdriver (LAist Review, #2) is poised to flow in celebration of his forthcoming disc, 2009's Jhelli Beam, at Amoeba Records early on in the evening. And, lastly, San Franciscan psych rock sextet Sleepy Sun will be performing at the Center for the Arts, Eagle Rock with Dios (Malos) and Slang Chickens. But we strongly suggest heading over to the Echo to catch Portland-based indie rock duo Viva Voce (LAist Review). LAist favorites Cut Off Your Hands (LAist Review) are slated to kick things off.
Tonight In Rock: Jon Brion, The Kills, Van Hunt, Freeland
Tonight local multi-instrumentalist/producer extraordinaire Jon Brion (LAist Interview, #2, Review) will be jamming with friends at the Largo at the Coronet. Atlanta-bred neo soul singer-songwriter Van Hunt is poised to ring in his latest disc, 2009's Use In Case of Emergency, at Zanzibar in Santa Monica. And, lastly, Freeland, UK-based DJ Adam Freeland's live band, will be gracing the Echo later on in the evening. But we strongly suggest doing whatever it takes to get into the Henry Fonda Music Box to catch UK-based indie rock duo the Kills. Fellow English garage rockers the Horrors are slated to kick things off.
Tonight In Rock: The Raconteurs, The Kills, Hot Chip, Fleet Foxes
We gave a lucky pair of readers tickets to the Raconteurs' concert at the Greek. And although it's hard to pass on the Nashville-based supergroup and their fiery classic rock vibe (Brendan Benson is so dreamy!), there are other shows that will certainly sate your music craving. Hawthorne-born, San Pedro-based Dios (Malos) will be putting on their penultimate night of a month-long Monday Night Residency at Spaceland. To miss all five nights would be, quite simply, a shame. Daniel Brummel of the legendary pop-rock band Ozma will also be playing tonight, continuing his residency at Mr T's Bowl. But if you secured tickets far in advance to see Fleet Foxes, who are currently in high demand, then consider yourself a real winner. The El Rey Theatre will be at capacity both tonight and tomorrow night thanks to the sensational Seattle-based folk rockers. And those in attendance will surely be afforded mind-numbing three-part harmonies, as well as meticulous, utterly tranquil instrumentation.
Weekend Getaway: Monolith Festival, Day 2
Day 2 of the out-of-state Monolith Music Festival at Red Rocks this past weekend consisted of American Bang, Tokyo Police Club, The Avett Brothers, Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings, Band of Horses, TVOTR, and Airborne Toxic Event who got their album torn apart on Pitchfork but rebutted. (Thanks a million to BetweenLoveandLike aka Erica for the ATE pics!)
