Pixar's Ratatouille was tops at the box office this weekend, raking in a healthy 47.2 million dollars. While that number was well below previous Pixar films like Cars (60 milllion) and The Incredibles (70 million), it was more than enough to take down Bruce Willis and Live Free or Die Hard which pulled in 33.1 million. Both movies enjoyed across-the-board good reviews and should show decent legs in the coming weeks.

A CG rat, a couple documentaries, John McClane and a Swiss genius...should make for an interesting weekend in the theaters. Be sure to also check LAist's LA Film Festival coverage for some other gems playing around town this weekend.

Ever wonder what it's like to be renaissance woman Sarah Vowell? It probably looks a little like this. At least, that's what it looked like last night as people crammed into Skylight Books to hear her read from her latest book, Assassination Vacation, now out in paperback.

LAist caught David Sedaris and Sarah Vowell last night in Royce Hall on the UCLA campus, and was happy to renew our stock of wry, witty, and cynical humor.

With today's release of Disney/Pixar's "The Incredibles" on DVD, LAist finds ourselves wondering what sort of a hero Los Angeles would get. Metropolis has Superman, Gotham City has Batman, and if memory serves, New York has Spiderman, the Fantastic Four, and a slew of others. Why does Los Angeles get the short straw? We're the second largest city in the nation, yet we get snubbed when it comes to a super-powered savior? The closest thing we've had has been Bail Bond Girl, which frankly, is very, very sad.

Buzzing from the giddy style and sheer joyous sensations initiated by the lovely film The Incredibles, which opened this weekend, we exited the Avco screening room 4 feeling a bit at ease from the political events of the week. Good old escapism has its place in a difficult world. Adults and children had packed the theater for this Saturday night show. There was applause and our senses seemed collectively tickled by the mellow palate, cool textures, and the popcorn thrill of the movie.

It's fortunate that, when a National Election doesn't go your way, there are a myriad of other entertaining things to get your mind off the fact that the country is going to hell in a handbasket. And today, LAist is proud to get you obessive-compulsive Bush-haters off that bandwagon and onto another obsessive-compulsively sad one.
