LAist took a recent trip to FREE DAY at The Huntington to enjoy their vast collection of indoor and outdoor treasures including two Andy Warhol pieces and the very do-not-touch Desert Garden of 60 landscaped beds featuring more than 5000 species of succulents and desert plants. One of the largest and oldest collections of cacti and succulents in the world, the 10-acre garden is nearly 100 years old and grew "from a small area on the Raymond fault scarp when in 1907-1908 William Hertrich brought in plants from local nurseries, private residences, public parks, and from collection trips to the Southwest and Mexican deserts," notes official website. more ›

Pop Culture: Warhol Art Installation Opens at The Huntington

Andy Warhol famously said everyone gets their 15 minutes of fame, and two of his most iconic pop art pieces are now on display at The Huntington Art Gallery in San Marino. Gifts from the estate of Robert Shapazian, Warhol’s Small Crushed Campbell’s Soup Can (Beef Noodle) painting and Brillo Box from the ‘60s, as well as nine unlicensed Brillo Box copies, are located in the mid-20th-century room alongside works by Sam Francis and Louise Nevelson. more ›

Desert Blooms and Local Flora

Desert Blooms and Local Flora

Huntington Beach Humane Society IS NOT Closing

Huntington Beach Humane Society IS NOT Closing

LAist loves animals as much as the next guy, maybe less because we don't have any pets. But still we get into Do-Something mode when we get an email like this: Long time well informed citizens of Orange County know the facts. They say, The Huntington so called 'Humane Society' is not closing but renovating. Which means essentially all the animals will be killed save for 15 kennels only. The owner is merely trying... more ›

Cock-A-Doodle-Do!

Hopefully the rain will soon be on its way out, so that everyone can enjoy the Chinese New Year festivities planned for this Saturday at The Huntington. The event, celebrating the Year of the Rooster, will begin at 10:30 AM with a traditional Chinese flower market in the Huntington's entrance pavilion, including plum blossoms (symbolizing the beginning of spring), peonies (prosperity), narcissus (longevity), and other blooms such as orchids, forsythia, camellias, and golden mums available for sale. more ›
