The little-barroom-band-that-could, did, this week in Los Angeles.
On the eve of the release of their fifth album in six years, Brooklyn-based The Hold Steady occupied L.A. Live's rin gong of acoustic perfection, taking to the confines of the Grammy Museum's intimate, 200-person theater for a moderated interview, audience Q&A, and rare acoustic show including songs from the new record, "Heaven is Whenever" (Rough Trade/Vagrant).
No One Wins At Violent Shows: The Hold Steady Prove A Point In Los Angeles
Pencil This In: Dance Performance at the Annenberg Beach House, Joel Grey's Phone Photos and Immigrants in the Media
Tonight the Grammy Museum hosts The Drop--a series that previews new music before its release--with the Brooklyn-based The Hold Steady. Following the interview, the band will take questions from the audience and perform several songs acoustically. Doors at 7:30 pm. The program begins at 8 pm. Tickets are $15.
Tonight In Rock: Lupe Fiasco, Broken Social Scene, The Hold Steady, Two Door Cinema Club
Tonight Chicago-based hip hop artist Lupe Fiasco will be performing to a sold-out crowd at the House of Blues Sunset. Brooklyn-based rockers the Hold Steady are poised to take on the Grammy Museum in Downtown. And, lastly, Irish indie...
Tonight In Rock: Vieux Farka Touré, The Hold Steady, Kitty, Daisy & Lewis, Fishtank Ensemble
Tonight Brooklyn-based rockers the Hold Steady will be performing to a sold-out crowd at the El Rey Theatre with El Bronx in tow (that would be the Bronx you know, only performing mariachi songs). English country/blues trio Kitty, Daisy & Lewis are poised to grace the Echo with none other than local indie rockers Le Switch. And, lastly, Oakland-bred Euro-American musical group Fishtank Ensemble will be performing at Bordello. But we strongly suggest heading over to the Troubadour to catch Malian singer and guitarist Vieux Farka Touré, son of one of the African continent’s most internationally renowned musicians Ali Farka Touré. LAist favorite, LA-via-Tel Aviv transplant Luke Top—also known as Fool's Gold front man—is slated to kick things off.
Tonight In Rock: Rivers Cuomo, David Lynch, The Hold Steady, Deerhunter
Tonight Weezer front man Rivers Cuomo will be stopping by Fingerprints in Long Beach. And on the earlier side of things, David Lynch will either be preaching Transcendental Meditation baloney or pumping out ambient noise at Amoeba Records in Hollywood. We're not entirely sure which activity he'll partake in yet. Atlanta's own noise rockers Deerhunter are slated to wreak havoc on eardrums at the El Rey Theatre with the equally abrasive act Times New Viking. And, lastly, Brooklyn-based rock band the Hold Steady are headlining the Wiltern. But we recommend checking into the Echoplex for Check One Twosday. This week Raleigh-based indie pop duo the Rosebuds will be performing with LA locals Lemon Sun.

The Hold Steady @ The El Rey - May 31, 2007
Last night at the El Rey, The Hold Steady did just that -- Not playing the coy, indie-nerd wallflowers and never crossing into absolute rock and roll mayhem, Craig Finn and the boys held the line, well, steady. Looking like a more-hip Paul Giamatti and gesturing feverishly like a less-nebbishy Woody Allen, Finn led the charge with flails and jolts, hand claps for miles, and his frighteningly accurate, wholly incongruous, Springsteen voice. Mesmerizing. The...

Armin Van Buuren's Top Ten Best CDs of 2006
We admit it. We love year-end Best Of lists. Why? We think lists by a variety of people are a far better way to see trends and discover new acts than say award shows or sales charts. If it weren't for Best Of lists it's rare that you'd hear so much about TV on the Radio, The Cold War Kids, The Hold Steady, Joanna Newsum, or the Knife - and who knows, maybe it's...
