Tonight In Rock: Pink Martini, The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart, The Most Serene Republic, The Henry Clay People

Tonight showtune maestros Pink Martini (LAist Interview, Review) will be headlining the Hollywood Bowl. Canadian indie rockers the Most Serene Republic are poised to take on Spaceland with Brisbane-bred trio the Grates. And, lastly, local indie rock outfit the Henry Clay People will be performing at the Lobster Festival at the Port of Los Angeles in San Pedro. But we strongly suggest heading over to the Troubadour to catch NY-bred indie pop act the Pains of Being Pure at Heart (LAist Interview).

Every year that we come to SXSW we fall in love with a band that was completely off our radar and surprises us with their cuteness and charm. Last year it was The Go! Team and The Grates, this year it the all-girl high school ska band from Japan, Oreskaband who are so good and infectious that we immediately ran to the back of the Elysium and bought their cd.

Wanna' know what's hot and fresh on our playlists? Look no further. Here's the 411 on what your favorite LA-centric blog is listening to. Whether it's sick and twisted or straight up embarrassing to mention -- it's all here:

Just because Thanksgiving is over doesn't mean we can't be thankful for some excellent people. Now, this might blow your minds, but LAist doesn't just innately everything, some of our information is handed to us either via email or snail mail or singing telegram.

Patience Hodgson had no patience. It wasn't even 15 minutes into The Grates' set at Spaceland Tuesday when she ran out into the crowd, made everyone form a circle and started dancing in the center with her ribbon-stick. Controlling the universe with school girl glee and giddy excitement. The happiest music to have come out this year was played in its entirety at the Silver Lake club as every track of the trio's "Gravity...

Unfortunately tonight we're extremely biased. We know there's a lot of shows happening around town, but for us there's really only one, the Australian trio The Grates. Their debut album "Gravity Won't Get You High" will be in our Top 5 of Best CDs of 2006 list at the end of the year, we've raved over their shows, YouTubed a few songs from their last Spaceland show, and we've even interviewed them like fanboys....

Dear LAist, I know you're all over The Grates, but are you familiar with Kinky? I have been asked by two different boys today to see each of these shows. I don't know what to do. AHHHHHHH. - P. Hilton Dear Perez, Yes it's true we're down with the Grates, but the good news is that even though the Grates play at Cinespace on that Tuesday, 9/5 (by the way, you're quite an organized...

The Aussie group The Grates were in LA for the final show of their US tour. Before they flew home to gear up for the release of their forthcoming LP Gravity Won't Get You High, which will be released in the US next month, the band was nice enough to answer some questions for us.

Patience Hodgson gets some air while Alana Skyring drives the beat as The Grates charmed the crowd at the Silver Lake club Wednesday night. The Aussie trio (John Patterson, not pictured) return home to Brisbane at the end of this week, winding down their US tour as they prepare to release their new single "19 20 20" back down under.

Of the hundreds of shows going down in LA this week, heres two that we're thinking about checking out.

Who doesn't love BET? Who doesn't love Interscope? Who doesn't love afterparties and smoking and drinking on a Tuesday night?
