The LA Times reports that local indie stalwarts Dim Mak Records has made a deal with Downtown Music (Gnarls Barkley, Cold War Kids, Art Brut, Justice) in which Dim Mak will continue to discover and develop new artists, and Downtown will give them that boost in distribution and promotion that Dim Mak has never been fortunate enough to be able to offer. I wasn’t sure what to expect as I cruised up Fairfax on the way to the Silent Movie Theater. Having never watched Dawson’s Creek, I was only slightly familiar with Chantal Kreviazuk’s music and, naturally, had never seen her live. What’s more—why was Perez Hilton hosting the whole shebang in the first place? And why was it at a movie theater? And, perhaps most importantly, would there be free booze? Let's face it, Angelenos, we're all a bunch of gossips. How else to explain that peculiar L.A. habit of looking up at each new customer who crosses a restaurant's threshold, assessing their attractiveness and/or celebrity. In certain dining establishments around West Hollywood, the atmosphere is akin to a high school cafeteria.
