Tonight In Rock: The Mars Volta, The Faint, As Tall As Lions, Kissing Cousins

Tonight Grammy Award-winning El Paso-bred progressive rockers the Mars Volta (LAist Review) will be headlining the Hollywood Palladium. Omaha-based electronic act the Faint are poised to take on Club Nokia with none other than local dance-infused rockers Moving Units (LAist Review). And, lastly, Silver Lake's own all-female quintet Kissing Cousins will be ringing in their debut disc Pillar of Salt, which was produced by Californian-bred multi-instrumentalist Richard Swift, at everyone's favorite local record shop Origami Vinyl. But we strongly suggest heading over to the El Rey Theatre to catch LAist favorites, NY-based alternative rock outfit As Tall As Lions (LAist Review). Seal Beach-based quartet RX Bandits (LAist Review) and Los Gatos-bred prog rockers Dredg are slated to perform as well.

Now that the election is over with the show-going commences. Tonight we've got electro sensation-turned-dud the Faint playing at the Wiltern with LA-based noise rockers Mika Miko. And speaking of shoddy electro-pop, we've got Shiny Toy Guns performing a KROQ-related contest-only event at the Viper Room. And, lastly, Brooklyn-based rock quintet Apes & Androids will be stopping by Spaceland for CLUB NME. But Portland's own folk rockers Musee Mecanique will be playing at Bordello with LA locals EXITMUSIC, Xu Xu Fang and Voice On Tape. Go, go, go!

Mikey AvalonAfter putting together an insane line up of bands, and secruing the incredible Exposition Park in Downtown Los Angeles for the venue, The Neighborhood Festival hooked up with LAist's favorite locally-based photo sharing community, Buzznet in a ticket giveaway bonanza.

The Ist-community are fans of Ratatat. How could we not be when their album, Classics, is an electro-indie haven. Great guitar riffs, dance beats and sans vocal make it a fun album to share with friends. Our favorite song is Wildcat, and upon first hearing it went around for two days (to the dismay of our roommates) going "Raaarrrr." Followed by tropicana, a slow starting song that would fit perfectly into a movie where a bunch of trouble making teens are walking up a hill to solve a mystery.

Every year, we say we're not going to battle the heat and the crowds and the traffic on the 10 to spend a weekend at the Empire Polo Fields in Indio; and, every year, Coachella puts together a list of acts that we'd kick ourselves if we missed.
