Tonight English-born American singer-songwriter, actress, and former stand-up comedian Nellie McKay will be performing Doris Day's songbook at the Alex Theatre in Glendale. Prolific San Franciscan experimental garage rockers Thee Oh Sees are poised to headline KSCR Fest at USC's E.F. Hutton/Founders Park with none other than Eagle Rock-bred indie rock outfit Princeton (LAist Interview), LA-bred psych rock trio the Entrance Band and local blues-infused indie rock duo Rumspringa (LAist Review, #2, #3), among many others. And, lastly, Oakland-by-way-of-D.C. indie pop label Slumberland Records will be ringing in twenty some-odd years of its existence at the Echo with Boston-bred trio Pants Yell!, Melbourne-based sextet Summer Cats and local singer-songwriter Devon Williams, among many other label mates of course. But we strongly suggest doing whatever it takes to get into the Walt Disney Concert Hall to catch critically-acclaimed French duo Air. Tulsa-bred singer-songwriter AM is slated to kick things off. more ›

FMLY Bicycle Ride (Eastside Meets Westide!) 03/13/10

FMLY Bicycle Ride (Eastside Meets Westide!) 03/13/10

I love me some Los Angeles (born, bred, and back again), but one of the things I miss the most about my time in San Francisco is the traffic-stopping, bell-ringing, cyclist rights-asserting celebration that is Critical Mass. Sure, LA has their own regional chapters, but with the city spread out as it is, the full impact of our cyclist army isn't felt as heartily as in our sister city to the North. Until now, that is. more ›

Former Nickel Creek fiddler Sara Watkins (LAist Interview), among many other virtuosos, is poised to grace the Grammy Museum in Downtown. And, lastly, Washington-based indie rock act the Lonely Forest will be taking on Spaceland for this week's edition of Club NME. And, lastly, LA-based psych rock outfit the Entrance Band will be headlining the Troubadour with Indian Jewelry and the Growlers in tow. But we insist that you head over to the Largo at the Coronet to catch LA's most beautiful and forlorn figure Fiona Apple. more ›

LA's own electronic genius Daedelus will be headlining the Echoplex and will be accompanied by Busdriver, the Mae Shi, Rumspringa and the Entrance Band. And although that stellar bill is all too enticing, we strongly recommend stopping by the Hotel Café for Buddyhead's Christmas Party. A trough full of celebrated local musicians, like QOTSA front man Josh Homme, Dead Meadow front man Jason Simon, Xu Xu Fang (LAist Review, #2, #3) and LAist favorites Dios (Malos) (LAist Interview), will preside over the unruly procession. more ›

Tonight In Rock: Justice, Rise Against, The Secret Machines, Asobi Seksu

Tonight In Rock: Justice, Rise Against, The Secret Machines, Asobi Seksu

Happy Halloween! Tonight there are tons of concerts across the Greater Los Angeles Area. We were looking forward to the Little Radio extravaganza in the outskirts of Downtown. Unfortunately, "the titanic team-up that had to happen" simply floundered. But, thankfully, that isn't stopping the Henry Clay People. They will be performing tonight at the Cat and Fiddle Pub in Hollweird with Long Beach-based rockers the Tall Hands. The monolithic Parisian electro duo Justice will be headlining a line-up at the Shrine Auditorium that is sure to sate anyone who's craving a dance party—including sets from Daedelus, Soulwax, Boys Noize, Crystal Castles, Crookers and Simian Mobile Disco, among many others. The Secret Machines are the special guests of a psych-induced bill over at Spaceland, which features LA locals the Entrance Band and Dead Meadow's own Jason Simon. And NY-based shoegazer Asobi Seksu will be putting onlookers at the Echo in a heavily distorted trance. It was exactly two years ago to date that Spaceland Recordings released Live at the Echo 10/6/06. We can't rule out the possibility of another recording. So we certainly suggest heading over to commemorate the release and potentially partake in history again. But we're embarking on a rowdy adventure an hour southward! Say what? The Growlers, who recently won Best Rock Band in the OC Weekly's annual Best Of List, and Austin-by-way-of-Dallas the Strange Boys (LAist Review) will be unleashing retro 60s, garage-style blues-rock at the Womens Club in Laguna Beach. We know it's a hell of a drive, but it'll be the most rollicking Halloween experience of your life. more ›
