Tonight In Rock: Shearwater, The Watson Twins, The Living Sisters, Kenneth Pattengale

Tonight, or rather early today, local country-infused folk, twin-sister duo the Watson Twins (LAist Review, #2, #3) will be making an appearance near the Bruin Bear statue at UCLA for the LA Times' Festival of Books. the Living Sisters—a triumvirate of venerable female troubadours, which includes Inara George, Becky Stark, and Eleni Mandell—are poised to grace the Bootleg Theater with none other than pseudo-super group Black Prairie, which of course includes three moonlighting members of the Decemberists. And, lastly, local singer-songwriter Kenneth Pattengale will be performing a very special, collaborative set at McCabe's Guitar Shop in Santa Mon Mon with folk singer-songwriter Joey Ryan. Although we strongly suggest heading to the aforementioned show, we highly recommend heading over to Spaceland to catch Austin-bred indie rockers Shearwater, who will be performing in support of their latest—2010's The Golden Archipelago. LAist favorites, Baltimore-based folk rock duo Wye Oak (LAist Interview) and Lawrence's own Hospital Ships. more ›

Grizzly Bear to Befriend L.A. Philharmonic

Grizzly Bear to Befriend L.A. Philharmonic

Of all the indie bands with some sort of animal in their title, Grizzly Bear might be the top dogs. After all, can Deerhoof, Deerhunter, Caribou, Panda Bear or even Animal Collective claim they are co-headlining a show with the Los Angeles Philharmonic? more ›

Bright Eyes and the Power of the Phil

Conor Oberst and friends were lucky to have one of the finest backing bands of all time Saturday night at the Hollywood Bowl -- the Los Angeles Philharmonic. Suzie Katayama's arrangements made even Bright Eyes' small songs sound huge, leaving us wondering who picked the setlist -- Katayama or Oberst? (Correction: (Thanks commenter) Bright Eyes multi-instrumentalist (and third permanent member) Nate Walcott arranged, Katayama only conducted.) In recent Hollywood Bowl history the Phil has teamed... more ›

Mere Mortals: LA's Hottest Band is Unsigned

Any struggling A&R rep ought to take advantage of this holiday season and jump on the Mere Mortals while Hollywood naps. Their self-made "Rebel Radio" EP is climbing the FMQB charts that track national airplay on new music radio shows. Not only are the Mere Mortals the only unsigned band on the Single chart where they're #15, but they're #10 on the Album chart. Last year Napoleon Dynamite's Jon Gries (Uncle Rico) checked out... more ›

Concert Review: The Decemberists

image from colinbrown via flickr. Against a painted backdrop of a Japanese landscape and bathed in the glow of red paper lanterns The Decemberists took the stage at the Wiltern on Saturday night to play for a full house in support of their latest album, The Crane Wife. The Portland quintet, augmented by a violin player on this tour, skillfully mingled the traditional guitar, bass and drums with a cornucopia of instruments not commonly... more ›
