#3 UCLA 77, #7 Stanford 67, OT - The Bruins clinched their third consecutive Pac-10 hoops crown with their victory over the Farm. It looked bleak for awhile, but they managed to come from behind. More from Jimmy later this morning. USC 93, Cal 89, OT - This game was tough for fans to watch. That's because it wasn't televised. And because USC blew a huge lead. It worked out OK in the end. We're......

How does UCLA celebrate winning a tough game against the Washington State Cougars? By tanking it against the Washington Huskies. The Bruins played a tight game with the Cougars Thursday night eventually clamping down on in the last 10 minutes of the second half to go on to a 67-59 win. Even though the Cougars had lost their last two games against Stanford and Cal, they are still a tough team. On Wednesday night......

I really did think the Arizona State Sun Devils would give the UCLA Bruins more trouble than the Arizona Wildcats. It looks like neither of those squads did much of anything against the Bruins. The Bruins are making a case for themselves nabbing a coveted #1 seed in March Madness by spanking the Sun Devils by 33 points and the Wildcats by 22. What’s really remarkable to witness is how up-tempo the Bruins are......

LNA was rained out this morning, but we're back with a quick update ... #5 UCLA 76, #24 Stanford 67 - The Bruins sent a clear message about who's atop the pecking order in the nation's toughest conference. Josh Ship led the way with 21, followed by Kevin Love and Russell Westbrook with 15 apiece. The Cardinal came into the game with a 7 game win streak. Cal 92, #22 USC 82 - The Trojans......

Article by Adam Rose and Ryan Jesena. UCLA has officially announced Rick Neuheisel as their new head football coach. Neuheisel was a walk-on quarterback for the Bruins and led them to the 1984 Rose Bowl victory against Illinois. He has a very successful track record coaching at the college level (66-30) but has spent the past few years clunking around the NFL assistant ranks. As a graduate assistant with UCLA, he was credited for the......

If you're a local sports fan, hopefully you had Columbus Day (International Day of Solidarity with Indigenous People, whatever) off to nurse a wicked hangover. In fact, maybe you should take tonight off from Sports Center, too. It's Leif Erikson day. Honest. Even George W. Bush knows that (and don't worry, he's probably not working today, either). Maybe it wasn't the worst, but it was up there. T.J. Simers hit the nail on the......

The Bruins were lucky enough to get coverage on FSN this time while breaking away from a 10-10 tie at the half to outlast Washington 44-31 last night. Washington's Jake Locker threw three deadly touchdown passes in the fourth quarter. It was a difficult game for the Bruins, until the Huskies' defense started to give during the second half. Each touchdown pass that Locker completed, the Bruins were able to respond to until finally opening......

Every week in college football proves to everyone they don’t know shit about the game. Case in point, #11 UCLA Bruins at Utah Utes. The Bruins had won all eight previous meetings against the Utes including a 31-10 victory on opening day at the Rose Bowl last season. So instead of a UCLA blowout the opposite happened. The Utes blew the Bruins and their #11 ranking out of the stadium 44-6 preventing the Bruins......

Lest we forget. 13 reasons to love the season. PRIDE. TRADITION. UCLA. Bruin football has started practicing for the coming season this week. The opener will be at Stanford on September 1st, just four weeks away (FSN). The first at-home game will be against BYU on September 8th. The Bruins clock in as the most experienced team in the PAC-10 (25 seniors) including 10 returning starters. Bruin defense was shown to be a powerhouse......

Angels 7, A's 6 - Francisco Rodriguez blew a save opportunity despite a three run lead. Fortunately, he was saved by Maicer Izturis' RBI single with two out in the bottom of the ninth. Vladimir Guerrero took the day off and while the Halos generated plenty of offense without him, none of the 15 hits left the park. The team's recent home run slump coincides with Vlad's, who hasn't gone yard in 24 games despite......

Due to popular demand after LAist's appearance on Rogan and Simers Squared, we present some additional coverage of the UCLA women's gymnastics team from this weekend's NCAA Championships. The Bruins finished fourth in the nation, thank in part to a strong performance by Tasha Schwikert (left) who came in second on the uneven bars. She completed a Shaposhnikova to shootover half to handstand, Tkatchev, perfect handstands and a stuck double layout dismount. Lost yet? We're......

Gators 76, Bruins 66 - Florida spoiled UCLA's championship hopes a round earlier than last year. After a low scoring first half, the Gators opened up fast in the second. The Bruins couldn't maintain the pace and were barely averaging a point per minute well into the second. All American Arron Afflalo was scoreless in the first half and finished with 17. Afflalo fouled out, as did Lorenzo Mata and Luc Richard Mbah a Moute.......

Bruins 68, Jayhawks 55 - Arron Afflalo led the way with 24 points to help UCLA avenge their #2 seeding by beating #1 seed Kansas. The team shot an impressive 53% from the field and was equally impressive on defense. Both teams came in known for protecting the hoop and showed it with a combined 32 steals and 46 turnovers. UCLA is back in the final four for a second straight year and an NCAA......

Lakers 121, Grizzlies 119 - It's March Madness, but the most impressive hoops action keeps coming from a guy who never played a minute of college ball. Kobe had 60 points against Memphis, but it wasn't just his one game point total that generated buzz. This is the third game in a row he has scored at least 50, a feat only matched by Wilt Chamberlain, Michael Jordan, Elgin Baylor. Chamberlain actually did it seven......

Tobacco Road, watch your back. Gainesville, better enjoy that trophy while you’ve got it. LA is back with a vengeance and is ready to reclaim its place atop the college basketball kingdom. With UCLA and USC both advancing to the Sweet 16 for only the second time ever, the local buzz hasn’t been this great in decades. The Bruins have been a consistently good program since the departure of John Wooden from the sidelines......

Nuggets 113, Lakers 86 - When Phil Jackson went to bed on Wednesday, he was probably looking forward to the day ahead. Things were set up nicely for a home game with Lamar Odom and Luke Walton both returning from injuries. Then his alarm clock rang. Within a few hours, the NBA dished out $100,000 in fines for his comments about a Kobe "witchhunt" and the Lakers lost for the seventh time in a row.......

The Bruins should have been worried, walking onto a court of 11,000 hardcore WSU fans, jumping and cheering at the top of their lungs -- "should have", but they weren't. Instead they bounced back from a 23-22 halftime deficit and extinguished any notion that they did not have control. UCLA finished the game 53-45 over WSU, and clinched the Pac-10 title; meaning UCLA could become the top seed entering the NCAA Tournament. Arron Afflalo led......

Ducks 3, Kings 2, SO - With both local teams struggling lately, Los Angeles and Anaheim opened a weekend home-and-home series at Staples Center. The Kings tied it up with about five minutes to play, and neither team could score in overtime. The Ducks, with one of the best records in hockey, skated away with a shootout win over the Kings, with one of the worst. The scrappy rivalry featured 56 penalty minutes issued in......

Pistons 92, Clippers 74 - The Clippers just want to go home. They wrapped a 7 game road trip with their fifth loss, this one at the hands of a rejuvinated Detroit squad. The Pistons are 11-2 since signing local college star Chris Webber, who had a game-high 19 points and nine rebounds in the game. Los Angeles shot just .324 from the field and was led by Cuttino Mobley with 17. The Clippers haven't......

Bruins 70, Trojans 65 - For the second time this season, LAist correctly predicted a barn burner. UCLA didn't have a lead until the final six minutes, when USC's foul trouble unraveled an impressive game from the matchup's traditional underdog. The Bruins went 23-31 at the line, compared to a mere 3-5 for the Trojans. USC kept it close until the final seven seconds, hitting a string of deep shots to pull within three. A......

Bruins 69, Ducks 57 - UCLA hoops grabbed sole possession of first place in the Pac 10 as the conference's top two teams faced off at Pauley Pavilion. The Bruins dominated immediately after the opening tipoff to avenge an earlier loss to Oregon which knocked them out of the nation's #1 ranking. The were also eager to put their last game -- a loss at Stanford -- behind them. They did so in convincing fashion......

With apologies to all of the other Southland programs, tomorrow’s showdown between UCLA and USC is to determine who is the top dog in our local college basketball scene. More importantly, the winner will maintain their hold on first place in the Pac-10, which is shaping up to be the toughest conference in the country. There's only one question: where does your allegiance lie? The Bruins were slaughtered by the Trojans 66-19 last year with what was considered the best UCLA men's football program in years. What is important to realize however is that last year's USC men's football program was also considered its best in years. While USC lacks the star power of last year's team, Pete Carroll has managed to take this year's additions and turn them......

The Bruins head to Arizona State tomorrow energized by last week’s decimation of Oregon State. Patrick Cowan and his support staff have put the four previous games behind them, and Bruin fans everywhere are riding this as though a new season has begun. UCLA completed their last exhibition game last Thursday night coming out on top of Humboldt State. Incoming freshmen Russell Westbrook and Michael Roll had great performances alongside veterans Josh Shipp and Arron Afflalo. Major stumbling blocks to consider include an injury impeding Lorenzo Mata’s playability, as well as recent questions regarding......

UCLA was impressive in winning their home opener 31-10 against a tough Utah team. Most impressive was first-time starter Ben Olson who threw for 318 yards, going 26-35 and connecting for 3 TDs. Even more impressive, and perhaps more important, was the swarming Bruin defense, which ranked near the bottom in previous seasons. They forced 3 turnovers including a 28 yard touchdown on an interception by Alterraun Verner early in the first half. Although......

The UCLA Men’s basketball team dropped a tough game to the visiting Washington Huskies, 69-65, giving the Huskies their first win at Pauley Pavilion since 1987. The Bruins, who led by as many as 15 points, found themselves trailing 64-60 when Ryan Appleby hit a three-pointer with less than 3 minutes to go. After some scrambling and a key three pointer by Arron Afflalo, the Bruins pulled to within one. But Husky forward Bobby......
